Nicole and Jim are great hosts. Their knowledge of the area helps you tailor your trip to meet your needs. We wanted to see Ketchikan away from the cruise ship chaos and the Black Bear Inn, along with guidance from Nicole and Jim, helped us do that. Location is amazingly beautiful and close enough to the airport without being on top of it. The Inn Itself is beautiful, cozy and well maintained. It was nice to return from a long hike, open the windows or sit on the deck and listen to the sound of the waves hitting the shore and watching eagles fly by. Very relaxing. I will miss talking with Jim and Nicole.

The hosts made us feel welcome from the minute we walked in - giving us a tour of the entire inn and letting us help ourselves to a well-stocked kitchen. We were there early in the season so not everything was fully functional (e.g. the floating barge), but the view of the water from our room made up for anything else. We had the Homestead Suite (it's not a suite, it's a room with a closed in porch area), which really needs updating (except the bathroom which had been updated). Too much old shag carpeting (ugh!) and entirely too many "things" in the room that clutter up an already small space. Can't wait to see the new "apartment" space they were renovating. We were there 5 nights, so it would also have been nice to have a couple of hot breakfasts - maybe those staying more than 3 nights should be offered that?

Response from Nicole Church, Owner at Black Bear Inn
Responded Jul 6, 2022
Thank you for taking the time to write and for complementing us on our hospitality, our natural gardens and the Inns great ocean views. Jim and I understand that guests are going to experience our place in slightly different ways so we are always interested to learn what our guests think. As owners of a small Inn all Reviews are very important to us but only when a review seem particularly troublesome, do we make a point of responding. If we had known that you found the Homestead suite unacceptable, we would have moved you and your family to another suite. Perhaps I never told you that the Homestead is dedicated to Jim's great grandparents Harriet and Forest Hunt. She was a very talented photographer, and he was on the Alaska Legislature for many years long before Alaska became a state. They were one of Ketchikan's founding families who came to Alaska in the 1890's. You made several comments about the Homestead that should be addressed. The carpet is not shag, is not old, and it is very well cared for. Alaskans prefer carpet in their bedrooms, and with our cool summers most people welcome the warm floor. The furnishings are high quality reproduction pieces that reflect the style in the Hunt home at the turn of the century. The historic photos and what you label knickknacks in the Homestead were passed down from the Hunt home. We do not think the Homestead needs to be updated. The bathroom, the bedroom and the sun room were all built at the same time. They were designed to look exactly as they do now in order to give our guests the feeling that they are stepping back into an earlier time in Ketchikan's history. Lastly, your decision to give us a 3-bubble score for cleanliness disturbed us the most. We are and always have been very concerned about cleanliness and work continuously to keeping our suites spotless. Everything in our units is dusted and thoroughly cleaned after every guest checks out and before new arrivals check in. We do all of the work ourselves in order to be assured that all suites are given the same attention to detail. We change out our linen line, pillows, bedding and towels yearly and more often if needed. Our Bissell Pro Heat heated cleaning system does an excellent job on our carpets and area rugs. The buildout on our Bunkhouse cabin that you mentioned is finished. It is now a 1200 sq. ft. vacation home with a full kitchen, Livingroom, washer and dryer, walk in pantry, 2 bedrooms and an open porch that runs along the entire water side of the house. My design style has not changed but you will be happy to know that except for some very good quality hand made wool area rugs the floors are wood, bamboo, porcelain and travertine tile.

I have traveled for years and I always look for the little bed and breakfasts along to way to enjoy the flavor of local culture. This is hands down the most delightful and wonderful bed and breakfast yet. Well done Nicole and Jim! This is a work of art. They have thought of every detail from the time you arrive until the time you depart. We loved the beds, oversized bathtub, cooking seafood from the outdoor grill after hot tubs, delicious snacks around the room, home and wonderful breakfast. Conversation and recommendations about where to explore, etc. If you are going to Ketchikan, stay here! We had to stay at another love cation our first night as Black Bear was booked. The other hotel was sub par. Don't risk staying anywhere else when you come to Ketchikan. We will be back!

We just took a eight day vacation here at Black Bear Inn. It was such a wonderful stay. Nicole and Jim make the hotel a really nice vacation house. We stayed at the Eagle's nest apartment, which got a partial ocean view and mountain view. You can even get a peek at the sunset if weather is good. The unit has a one bedroom apartment style with a full kitchen and washer/dryer. We got everything we need for the vacation. Nicole has a very nice collection of tea, coffee, snack and even beers for us. Nicole and Jim are always there to offer help whenever needed. Nicole prepared hats, umbrella, binocular, hiking stick ... Everything is clean and the decoration is really, really lovely. The inn has a back yard which is very nicely done and ocean front. There are seals, eagles right on site. Nicole knows the area and she knows all the tips for us to enjoy our stay. She recommended a few tours, which we had really good experience. She told us where we can find wild lives and which hiking trails fit our needs. Jim was working on the yard hard and elegantly to make it a really lovely place to enjoy. This is a perfect location to getaway. There are too many good things with this lovely inn that I wont be able to cover them all.

Thank you Zhen for posting our first review of the season. It was such a pleasure to have you and your wife Yueming stay with us for over a week. We are pleased that you enjoyed Ketchikan and got to experience some of what makes southeast Alaska so special. Enjoy your summer and be sure to let us know how Yueming's training is coming along. We expect to here about her next year at the Boston Marathon.

My wife and I stayed at the Inn August 17-20, 2021. The property is very clean and quiet with nice views of the narrows and ocean. The owners, Nicole and Jim, are really nice people who are very knowledgeable about what to do and see in Ketchikan. They are always available for a chat but respect your privacy. We stayed in the Homestead Suite on the ground floor with great views and access to a quaint porch. The suite also had access to a wonderful great room and well appointed kitchen. Jim made us eggs every morning with fresh fruit, bagels and cream cheese. While there we strolled the town, went fishing for salmon and halibut, hiked nearby, and viewed bears dining on salmon in the river at low tide. Nicole gave us excellent recommendations on dining in town and at Salmon Falls Lodge. This was the best place we stayed on our 2 week trip to the Kenai and the inner passage.

We concluded five weeks of independent travel in Alaska with a two night stay at the Black Bear Inn before catching the AMHS Ferry back to Bellingham, WA. What a wonderful and relaxing way to spend our last two nights in Alaska! The Inn is lovely, the hosts are so friendly and kind. We did two great hikes they told us about and had a delicious dinner each night at restaurants recommended by Nichole. The innkeepers have thought of every comfort for the room, the decks and hot tub/outdoor kitchen space. The breakfast was included with our B&B room and it was relaxed and we had lots to choose from and were able to have it at our leisure. The Inn is right on the Inside Passage waters so there was something to see from the spacious decks. The property is beautiful and the landscaping is too. We loved all of our time exploring in Alaska and especially traveling at our own pace and the Black Bear Inn was a nice part of this trip!

Our family was planning our fishing trip to Alaska and we decided to fly into Ketchikan 2 days early to explore that city. While looking for hotels my boyfriend stumbled upon the Black Bear Inn and wow we are glad we did! Great communication before the trip, Nicole answered all our questions and make sure we were in the right room for our needs. When we arrived we were welcomed in so warmly, given great recommendations for local things to and restaurants to go to.

We can't wait to visit again one day in the future and highly recommend anyone traveling to Ketchikan- Black Bear Inn is a MUST STAY!!

We made our reservations expecting to hide from the world for a few days, but Nicole and Jim made us feel so at home that we were comfortable chatting with our hosts as well as other guests. The breakfast was always plentiful and delicious. As for the location, it was amazing. A car is required for a stay in Ketchikan anyway, so the Black Bear Inn was perfect. We could drive into town or into the woods in a matter of minutes. I don't understand why anyone would choose to stay at a motel in the center of town when there are so many things to do and see on the island if you have a car. I would rather wake up to hear the ocean outside my window and drink my morning coffee watching the birds than to hear the sounds downtown. We cannot wait to return.

Anything I write about the Black Bear Inn just doesn’t do enough justice to how wonderful our time was there. Jim and Nicole are the sweetest people with such a kind heart and did everything possible to help us enjoy our trip, even before we arrived!

We booked our stay at Black Bear Inn last fall and Nicole had been in touch with us ever since. They technically were not open for the season yet, but worked with us to make sure we could stay there before the tourism season started. She helped us get a discounted rate for a rental car and made sure we had everything lined up prior to arriving, even arranging for her husband Jim to pick us up from the airport ferry and taking us into town for dinner!

The inn is beautiful and had such wonderful touches to remind you of home in Alaska. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was clean and inviting. And talk about the view!!! You will want to stay here if for no other reason than to watch the sunset over the Tongass Narrows or wake up watching whales and bald eagles moving about in the morning while you’re having a cup of coffee and breakfast that they provided. Jim and Nicole both had such great stories and went above and beyond to make dinner reservations for us and tell us the places we need to visit while we are there.

Whenever we come back to Ketchikan, we will not hesitate to call up Nicole and book a stay at the Black Bear Inn again. It truly felt like we were home the entire time and we cannot wait to stay there again!

We get a lot of inquiries from potential guests who tell us they have allergies. I believe that our place will meet your need. We built the Inn ourselves so we are confident that it is free of mold or other material that can cause problems. We clean all of the rooms ourselves and do not use cleaning supplies that have harsh chemicals, dyes, or perfumes in them. All of your suites have inside and outside entrances and our rooms have windows that open. We have never allowed smoking inside the Inn and I do not believe anyone has ever broken the rule. I should also mention that because we are on the ocean there is usually a fresh breeze and our guests always comment on how fresh the air is and how well they sleep. With prior approval, we do sometimes allow small pets in the Bunkhouse cabin. When we do, we have special rugs, towels, and bedding that is used and because the floors are tile we are able to make sure that no pet hair is left behind. Because our season is so short we unable to offer discounts in the summer. But you will always get the best deal when you call the Inn directly rather than going through a third party booker. And, sometimes when a guest is traveling alone and booking a longer stay we are able to give them a discount. If you have other question feel free to give me a call. Nicole 907-617-7567

When guests arrive after 9:00 PM and do not rent a car, we suggest that they take a cab to the Inn. We are only 2.3 miles North of the ferry landing and there are cabs waiting at the terminal when the boat arrives. The charge will be about $11.00. Your unit will be open and ready for your arrival. There will be a note on the front door of the INN telling you where your unit is located. Have you already booked your stay with us? If not you should do it soon, in order to be assured of a reservation. I am also happy to help you plan your time in Ketchikan and make sure your stay on our beautiful Island meets your expectations. You can book directly with us on our secure web site.
