The Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff in Johannesburg invites mixed feelings among its visitors. While the hotel's atmosphere is often lauded for its serene, vintage allure with unique personal touches, the guest experiences vary considerably. Accommodations are acknowledged for their spaciousness, yet some find the decor dated and the cleanliness, especially in the bathrooms, not up to par.
Critics argue that the value is diminished by the steep prices, which don't always match the expected standard of luxury, particularly when it comes to amenities that sometimes disappoint. Nonetheless, the service is frequently described as friendly and professional, despite occasional lapses.

Detailed Reviews
We spent 2 nights in the Four Seasons before heading to Cape Town. This is a wonderful property which we liked much better than the Saxon Hotel (read our review there if you are to choose between the two properties).
Location: It's located on a hill overlooking the city Zoo and the city from a distance, their gardens are manicured and so beautiful with lots of flowers (believe me, its perfection). Most rooms have lovely panoramic views, as well as their restaurants.
Rooms: Spacious and nicely designed with a subtle African theme, huge marble bathrooms. The hotel is composed of 2 story small buildings along a main road and gardens, it's very picturesque. The interior design, tech and bathrooms in rooms at the Saxon Hotel rooms is more impressive and modern than at the Four Seasons, but views here are much better (in our opinion this is the only aspect where the Saxon Hotel wins, but at a higher price).
Restaurant: We had dinner at Flames and breakfast at View. Breakfast was perfect in terms of variety, views and service. Dinner was good but we found service to be below the standards in comparison.
Service: the best, every single member of the staff is truly kind and attentive, always with a smile. Front desk and the concierge runs a smooth and elegant operation; the four seasons app for requests responds within seconds!
In conclusion, if you are to choose the best luxury hotel in Jo'burg, go to the Four Seasons (best service, best atmosphere, best views, best food and breakfast, wonderful rooms) you won't regret!

I stayed for the weekend and loved every minute of it . All COVID protocols have been carefully adhered to and follow through everywhere one goes on the property. Golf carts have plastic dividers so that guests don’t have physical contact. The staff wear masks and gloves all the time. Our room was spotlessly clean and the beds are super comfy . Staff are easily accessible and take time to engage with guests. Everything runs via an app so if you need a golf cart for example you order on the chat via the app. Wi fi is free and works all over the property. The meals at Flames restaurant are exceptional, presentation is classy , the waiters provide recommendations with explanations of the various dishes . Booking is essential for the restaurant, it’s a popular spot . The spa is of the highest standard, with COVID protocols very closely managed. For example basins in the change rooms have the middle one sealed to allow for social distancing . Masks are worn during treatments and the steam room and sauna only allow for one person at a time. Over all it was five star service from the time we arrived until our departure.

The Westcliff, like many Four Seasons properties, is located in a beautiful property with sprawling land and exceptional views. We used the golf cart to get around to our room as the hotel is set upon a hill. The rooms were fine, roomy and spread out, the bed and bedding were very comfortable, we slept great. The A/C didn’t cool as much as we would have liked, but they brought us a fan. The staff were amazing. Ute at the front desk was concierge, housekeeping, room service - anything we needed she went above and beyond to take care of us. COVID has hit the area quite hard, and they did everything to make you feel safe and also make sure you enjoyed your stay.

I am a returning visitor from the Uk. Our first visit was so special, we did t hesitate to rebook. Firstly I only have accolades for your ‘hardworking staff’ chefs , drivers, servers cleaners and reception staff. Again was received warmly but that’s were it ended. My nightmare began with the room/ suite , it had a danced out carpet and tardy dusty curtains.one toilet roll, no longer the hotels brand toiletries albeit it Bulgari-cheaper! Not stocked up, bathrobes had seen better days!! Upholstery well worn in!! I did complain and was placed in our original suite the following day. It was just as run in as the previous suite. Obviously not maintained and unkempt since the last visit .Then sundowners and if I ever felt out of place! The Man with the blue suite who walks around like he owns the place . This is not your house and unfortunately your behaviour does not endorse the four seasons. In my opinion probably the worst I have experienced.didn’t even acknowledge us as guests ! He spent time going to Certain tables only speaking loudly about the VIPs he was expecting. Totally disregarding that we are guests So I pay the same price as them but not VIP enough to even say hi, ‘how is your stay with us?’ MyR25,000 is not good enough to someone else paying the same amount? ’Let me tell you then NEver again! We travel the world and never made to feel so out of place. I came here to relax and enjoy four season hospitality and very dissatisfied and disappointed. Obviously management had changed and not in a good way.You give four seasons a bad name Why you cannot pave around the swimming pool is beyond me? Instead I had to sun in soggy overwatered grass that my sun bed was slugged in. There are so many beautiful hotels in Johannesburg I deeply regret spending my custom with yourselves. The hotel seemed very over booked and word has it that Certain guests were then offered accommodation at the Saxon. We obviously didn’t fit that criteria and you put us in the servants quarters. I did manage to speak with a manger on my departure? Natalie who was apologetic . I am now writing this review as I never received an email or any correspondence confirming my grievance and or any apology or acknowledgment from Four Seasons Johannesburg. I have many pics if you would like me to share them don’t hesitate to contact me.

We went to the Four Seasons Westcliff on dec 31st to spend one night there for New Year’s Eve. We arrived at 12:00 pm and since our rooms were not ready we went to the Flames restaurant for lunch. For appetisers we ordered hallumi kataifi, burrata salad and prawn and avocado cocktail. The halloumi was good I didn’t try the prawn and avocado cocktail but it didn’t look really appetising and the burrata I sent back because when I cut the Burrata it was completely dry in the middle with no cream. I have never seen that anywhere. They told us this is how it comes I told them they need to change their supplier because this is not the way it’s supposed to be. Even Woolworths has better Burrata. Then for mains we ordered the truffle burger with fries x 3 and I wanted the bone marrow which was an appetiser and one mac and cheese from the kids menu. They came back to us 10 min later to tell us they did not have bone marrow so then I Ordered the cauliflower soup. I took a bite of the burger it was ok I couldn’t taste any truffle to be honest and the truffle fries had no truffle in it either. The mac and cheese was really good. My soup was ok some bites were bitter but I’m not sure why.
When I went to use the restroom one was out of order so only one was available but it was occupied. I waited a bit but it was taking too long so I went to the handicap one and the lock was broken and of course someone walked in while I was doing my business. This is supposed to be a 5 star hotel we have stayed at other Four Seasons in other countries and it’s not this standard. Very disappointing. This evening there is a New Year’s Eve event at the same restaurant shouldn’t they at least make it a priority to get the washrooms fixed? Unbelievable. Honestly you shouldn’t be charging 13500 rands per room per night for a premier view room if you can’t fix the washrooms at the only restaurant you have.
The room was very nice but had too many issues. The balcony door did not lock, the lights in the balcony were not working. My sink in the bathroom was not draining properly.
New Years Eve was very nice. Buffet was nice and the band was amazing.
Breakfast was a bit of a mess. Only one person at the egg station so eggs took very long to get. She also messed up my son’s omelette order and added bacon, we do not eat pork so that was a bit annoying. You should have at least two people at the egg station if you know you will be busy since it’s New Year’s Day.
I really don’t think based on the prices they are charging for the room that it is worth it overall. Four Seasons Westcliff is not a 5 star hotel and they have a lot of work to get to that level.

This hotel is the way to start your trip to South Africa. Perched on the cliffs of Johannesberg the location has some of the most picturesque views. The staff was very professional and accommodating. Anything I requested was made readily available with very little wait time ( to included room service). The dining area for both breakfast and dinner was just spectacular. The food and beverage Manager introduce himself and advised if there was anything I needed just let him know. Stayed there for 3 days and the meals were consistently divine. I always vet every destination that I sell to my luxury clients; this will be my hotel of choice for Joberg. My room was fantastic with a beautiful sunrise from my balcony. The making of your own Gin experience was so educational and so much fun. It is great to see that after the pandemic this staff who has been there for years was still intact and professional. Job well done! Looking to bring a group back there soon. Until next time Thank you from Global Luxury Travel.

I decided to surprise my husband for his 50th birthday and booked a “staycation” at the four seasons.
From the time I called the reservation Manager Betty until the time we departed the hotel , we were made to feel special.
The staff were all friendly, strict Covid protocols were followed .
Our Suite had a beautiful view overlooking JHB, the bathroom was large with very good water pressure .
There were tea and coffee making facilities in room and ample water bottles.
They went the extra mile to put a few little touches to make my husbands birthday even better. A chocolate board was put in our room upon arrival and at turn down roses and decoration on the bed.
We ate lunch at the Flames Resturant and breakfast there too and the food was fresh, well presented and of a high quality.
I was not mad about the bathroom shampoo, conditioner and body wash products but the vetiver smell is not very ones taste.
All in all it was a memorable stay. We were made to feel special and the hotel staff really tried to do their utmost best making it a fabulous stay.
The four seasons is the four seasons and they lived up to their reputation.

This particular Four Seasons in among my favourites not necessarily for the architecture of the buildings, (which are fine) but for the staff. They are attentive, cheerful, prompt in delivery of whatever service, and I never feel that I being silently held up for a tip. From the cleaning people to the restaurant and bar people to the front desk people, I was the recipient of thoughtful and preemptive gestures/actions. This place is consistently exceptional.

Like nearly all properties in Johannesburg, this hotel is a gated property set away from the street. A few of our taxis had difficulty finding the entrance. The property consists of both residential condos/apartments and the hotel portion. The staff is friendly and in our experience was highly accommodating of our individual needs. The spa is good, but not quite great. During our two-night stay, there was only one restaurant open (the hotel was undergoing renovations). The breakfast buffet was excellent, but the dinner menu was a bit limited, especially if one does not eat red meat. We had multiple meals at this sole restaurant, and nearly all of our proteins were overcooked. Understood that the quality of the protein may be limited by available sourcing options, but we did expect a lot more from a Four Seasons-affiliated restaurant. Be mindful to not leave cash in open view in your room (even non-local currency). The hotel service (versus the restaurant service) was top notch. 5* for the hotel; 3.5* for the restaurant. We would stay here again and just make a greater effort to eat elsewhere.

I have been in many hotels from Johannesbourg rated 4-5 stars, this one exceed my expectations in terms of architecture, service, location, cleanliness. I will definitely go back again and again. Specially during this pandemic period, they taking care of guest health by applying appropiate jules to protecteur against COVID.

Hello from Johannesburg.
The Hotel is situated on large grounds over looking the city, allowing guests to enjoy evening walks around our property grounds. There are no other restaurants within walking distance. During the day, it is nice to walk some of the local neighborhoods and the Westcliff Stairs. We would recommend Uber or our Hotel Car Service when looking to head out at night for dinner. I hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Martin Cody
Hello from Johannesburg and my apologies for the delayed revert.
We have a chauffeur car service we offer guests from the airport and the prices start at R1,600 for a Mercedes E Class.
Best wishes, Martin
The hotel can arrange for a local guide to take you on guided day trips. Check with them via email or wait until you check in.
I'm sure there is one that the hotel can arrange transportation to, although how close it would be, I have no idea. Didn't use any service like that, except the spa at the hotel.
