We stayed at Derwent House for 7 nights and used it as a base for visiting Cape Town and surrounding areas. We loved every minute and can't wait to return. Jo and Carol have created a peaceful hotel with stylish decor and interesting pieces of African art. We immediately felt at home. The clientele was almost all couples while we... More

Our trip to Cape Town started at the International Airport with Tania - our driver laid on by the hotel to meet us off the flight. Tania provided an interesting and informative ride to the hotel. I had not been to Cape Town since the early 90s so it was good to see some significant differences. Tania updated me with... More

My wife and I are almost speechless after three wonderful nights at this most charming B&B. The Derwent House has it all.....beautiful decor, scrumptious breakfasts and afternoon teas, attentive and constantly smiling staff, owners with a sense of humor, and great location. Top notch accommodation from which to explore the gorgeous city of Cape Town and the southern Cape.

We stayed 6 nights at Derwent House and could not have been happier. Our room, though smallish, was extremely comfortable. There is a huge lounge/sitting area with free internet access and lots of interesting reading material, so there is no need for a big bedroom. The breakfasts were delicious, and we loved the fact that cake and tea/coffee were available... More

The main downside to this hotel for us was the size of the bedroom. We stayed in room 2 which was very small and cramped with not enough room to leave a suitcase on the floor. The room had a bath tub and shower over which is not even in a tiled area so the whole floor gets soaked. To... More

This was our first time in South Africa and on arriving at Derwent House at 10.30 on the first evening we were not disappointed. Jo and Carol were excellent hosts and took time throughout the day to ask what we were planning and to make recommendations regarding routes, restaurants and trips. The other staff are friendly, polite and professional and... More

I agree with all other comments in the Excellent category. I would like to add that we particularly appreciated the expert help Jo and Carol gave us with our Cape Town plans. They booked a memorable visit to the Langa Township on Sunday so we could visit a Church Service. They booked every excellent restaurant, cabs, plus our transport from... More

Spent 3 nights here recently, and it is a lovely little guest house, tucked away on a quiet road off the trendy Kloof Street. Rather than echo lots of the previous reviews, which are all very accurate, I'll try and focus in on a few other bits that people might find useful. 1. We stayed in Room 7. It was... More

After reading prior recommendations about the Derwent House, I was surprised to find out how ordinary this B&B was. The room we rented for two nights was unusually small for a small hotel with this pricing. The door from the bedroom to the bathroom prevented someone from using the toilet, making the bathroom especially cramped for two visitors. The hotel... More

We just wanted to correct a few inaccuracies in this review to reassure tripadvisor users: 1. We were just on two days off. Our Managers Noluvuyo and Busisiwe were on duty, both of them are fluent in English, even though it is not their first language. 2. We are a VAT registered business and are required to levy VAT on... My wife and I traveled to South Africa on a delayed honeymoon. The trip was designed to be the trip of a lifetime, and Derwent House certainly did its part to fulfill that dream. The rooms are fantastic. Simple and stylish, they really offer a rather luxury feel. And for the price, they far exceeded expectations. The two decks off... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself. We're waiting for you! ... more   less
