Built in 1713, Coopmanhuijs was one of the first grand residences in the heart of historic Stellenbosch, and is now surrounded by the town's many stylish shops, galleries and museums. The rooms in the Manor House and newly built rooms overlook a outdoor pool and a walled courtyard. Guests can enjoy meals from the Provencal kitchen and dine at leisure with a glass of fine Cape wine in the courtyard or in the intimate Helena's Restaurant.

So lovely to return again this year !
This was the 5th hotel on our trip in the western cape this year, and it was like coming home as soon as we walked in the door.
I noticed the little details which make this great hotel worth returning to. Gorgeous bed linen, comfortable beds, fluffy white towels, well stocked tea/coffee, a hair dryer which is actually beside a mirror, a vanity mirror which is actually useful, daily water and daily biscuits and daily turn down. Class !
The location is perfect, and the staff are all great. We particularly like sitting out on the front terrace watching the world go by with a glass of wine or two.
Thank you so much for your excellent hospitality once again !

I stayed here last minute after my flight was cancelled. While I arrived late in the evening, the staff on duty were incredibly welcoming and kind, especially appreciated after a hectic travel day. They made sure I was able to get settled in. The room was absolutely wonderful, with a spacious bathroom, room, and balcony, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. Small touches like the kettle being pre-filled were greatly appreciated. While I’m happy my flight was rescheduled, I wish I had more time to enjoy staying here, not just because of the room and location but also because of the welcoming and kind staff.

Traditional hotel in the heart of Old Town Stellenbosch. Surrounded by bars, boutiques and restaurants.

Our room was nice, the food at Helena’s was good however lacked some ambience.

I had notified the hotel at time of booking 9 months ago and contacted them before we arrived which they acknowledged that we were celebrating my husbands 50th birthday on the day we arrived and asked for a bottle of something to be added to our room and to my bill. There was nothing. No mention of anything or acknowledging his birthday. All our other hotels we went to made a huge effort despite it not being his birthday while at their hotels. Very disappointing.

We enjoyed the food in Helena’s but beware if you choose the wine pairing it’s not as good as you would expect considering the location of this hotel. They did not talk through the wine and history , tasting or what you should get with a wine pairing.

In all honesty there is better hotels around Stellenbosch and I feel that this hotel is complacent.

Could of been much better.

Dear RebeccaD1630, I want to express our sincere gratitude for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay with us. Your review holds great importance to us, and we take it very seriously. Rest assured that we will address the issues you've raised with the urgency and attention they deserve. First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt apologies for the oversight regarding your husband's birthday. It appears that your initial correspondence was with one of our employees, who has since moved on from our company, leading to a regrettable miscommunication. I deeply regret that we failed to make you and your husband feel exceptionally welcome and valued during your stay at Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel & Spa. We take great pride in the consistent positive feedback we receive from our guests on platforms like TripAdvisor, where they commend the exceptional service they receive from our staff at all times. Kind regards Suzaan Groenewald General Manager

We knew we wanted to stay in town for our Stellenbosch trip and this hotel was perfect. It's right in the center of everything, so we were able to walk to all the places we needed to. Great restaurants and bars close by—Try the Fat Butcher! We ubered to the wineries we wanted to see and it was very convenient and inexpensive.

The breakfast here was by far the best breakfast we had our entire two-week trip traveling the country. The pre-set items were so fresh—the fruit tastes better in South Africa, I swear. Then the hot breakfast they prepared for us was always delicious. The waffle with berries was my particular favorite. I still dream about it.

The service was impeccable. They had a bottle of champagne waiting in the room for us when we arrived for our honeymoon with a lovely card. Each night, they also put a bottle of water and late night treat on each nightstand during the turndown service. This was a great detail.

Our room was very spacious with a lovely view of the main street. Although this hotel is older, they've done a great job keeping it updated. The bathroom has heated floors, the tub is very spacious, and the shower has strong water pressure. The bed was very comfortable too. We will definitely be recommending this hotel to friends and family.

From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by a complement of staff who efficiently checked us in and sorted out vehicle parking/luggage etc with no fuss to us whatsoever. Our room was delightful, with all the necessary comforts making it feel like home, just better! We had a private balcony overlooking the pool area, where we could relax and read a book peacefully. In the morning we had a scrumptious breakfast served by the friendly staff. We truly loved our stay and I must say, it was very difficult to checkout. A BIG thank you to everyone at Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel & Spa we had THE most memorable stay!

This hotel has so much going for it; the location is possibly the best in Stellenbosch. The hotel is historic. It is very comfortable with nice rooms and comfortable beds. The staff are amazing. Food is great. If I stop here, then I give it a 5* rating.

But there is one big flaw - the hotel is not properly equipped for load shedding despite many other hotels around it which are. When load shedding comes on (on average 7,5hrs per day at varying times) only some lights remain working. All plugs (in the deluxe room we were in) did not work. This means the TV switches off (like it did midway through a Premier League football match I was watching); my wife who has long hair had just finished washing her hair and couldn’t use her hair dryer to dry it. We could not charge our phones. At breakfast, kids at the table next to us wanted the waffles and were told the waffle machine doesn’t work during load shedding; we couldn’t get cappuccinos because the coffee machine wouldn’t work, and so on…

I urge whoever owns the hotel to please get up to standard and put in a proper system so that guests can have an uninterrupted stay. I would not want to stay here in the summer heat without the Aircon’s working! The hotel cannot call itself 5* until it can offer 24/7 convenience. Regrettably I won’t be staying here until this is resolved - and it is regrettable because of all the amazing things it has to offer.

Thanks to the whole team that made our stay at Coopmanhuijs extra special! We spent 3 nights in this beautiful hotel and loved every minute. The staff really make you feel at home and comfortable. Our room was very clean, big and the bed very comfortable. The housekeeping girls were so friendly and always asking about our day and if we needed anything.
Breakfast was exceptional and we loved sitting on the veranda every morning while having a coffee.
Thanks, and we will be back next time we come to South Africa!

If I'd stayed in room 4, I'd have rated the property three-star because of the noise from the kitchen and AC unit. Thankfully, Shane moved me to room 5, which had a large window that opened onto the tree-lined street, providing fresh air, natural light, and the sound of cooing doves.

What's to like:
- Room 5 has charm
- Great location: plenty of shops and restaurants closeby
- Charlotte Rhys bath products
- Made-to-order breakfasts, served outside
- Onsite spa
- Strong WiFi
- Complimentary bottle of wine, turn-down service, hot shower, large bathroom

Room for improvement:
- Hard bed
- Not sure why two front-of-the-house staff told me it takes 1.5 hours to get to Groot Drakenstein station (it takes 25 minutes)?
- Rooms 1, 2, 3, and 4 are right over the stairwell and kitchen: you can hear everything

Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel is located in the centre of Stellenbosch. It is replete with old world charm. Our room was small but beautifully appointed with a balcony which was an ideal spot to relax after a day of sightseeing. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and the food and service were excellent. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and varied. If you are planning on an early departure from the hotel, we would suggest advising the restaurant staff the night before.

An outstanding hotel where you are made to feel like royalty from the moment you arrive. That entails free courtesy parking which, given how busy Church Street is, was most welcome.

Our room was spacious and our bathroom huge, we've had smaller bedrooms. Everything you could reasonably want was provided in the room , which was immaculate.

We ate in the restaurant twice. The first time our main course was lamb shank, which simply fell off the bone, accompanied by an excellent local merlot. On the second night we ate off the "set" menu, there were at least three choices for each course, with matching wines served in generous glasses. I had wonderfully tender ostrich steak and my wife Kingklip.

There was an extensive breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, cooked meats and cheese. There were also a range of hot options. My eggs florentine were particularly good.

The best feature of the hotel was the staff who were unfailing friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone and they were always happy to help you.

We would genuinely think about going back to Stellenbosch just to stay here again.

Basically yes. In fact given the water shortage situation in W Cape you will be made particularly welcome by not using the bath. There is a lift in this hotel - bit slow but gets you there.
