Detailed Reviews
We spent New Years Eve at laFortuna. Although we only live 15 minutes away, it is like another world. The view is breathtaking, sunsets and sunrise are spectacular, the staff are extremely courteous and obviously someone has spent a lot of time in staff training. The meal was excellent and very reasonably priced, service prompt and efficient, and, being an early riser, having coffee delivered to my doorstep at 7:00 am was a real pleasure. Our casita was quiet with a comfortable bed and private outdoor bathroom with hot shower and a biodigester powered toilet. Although this is an eco-lodge powered by solar panels there was plenty of power available for lighting when I needed it (1am bathroom trips) but leave your hair dryer at home and let Mother Nature dry your hair in the surprisingly dry air. This is not a humid climate. The view of the fireworks was spectacular and when it was over about 1/2 hour later the lodge was peaceful and quiet with perfect sleeping weather. We shall certainly return for another New Year's celebration.

+1
This place is it.
Itās secluded with beautiful and well maintained grounds. Each casa is secluded in its own spot that you almost feel you have the entire cove to yourself.. well other than Sasha, Sanza and Bicsuit the 3 incredible dogs that live on the property. Sanza will be happy if at anytime you want to play fetch with an avocado. And if dogs arenāt your thing they will leave you be.
The minimal footprint of this place is inspiring. Being mostly self-sustainable and still able to provide top amenities is something to be proud of.
The food is incredible and I miss the delicious coffee and breakfast watching the sunrise. I am pescatarian and my husband a vegan, so we sometimes worry of being that burden to small hotels. We stayed for a week and the dinners were do delicious!
The quaint style and attentiveness of the staff is unparalleled. They are the there to help with any needs. Kat and Steve are so awesome and we loved getting the chance to talk with them.
The location is secluded in its own cove, but it is so close to any of the nearby villages and easily accessible and cheap by taxi boat. Lake Atitlan has such colorful and kind cultures living among the lake. And if exploring isnāt your thing than you will have plenty of relaxing and swimming to do on the property.
To bring up the obvious concerns for many.. COVID. I work in healthcare in the US and felt that coming here was safer than traveling to see my family over the holidays. Guatemalaās numbers are very low. Temperatures are taken on outings and hand sanitizer everywhere. All people on the flight had a negative test prior to arrival. We took a very safe private van (driver was partitioned from us) to the lake from the hotel. Everyone wears masks. The property is super secluded and quiet. Meals can be delivered to your room for your own privacy.
What you are comfortable with is a personal thing. But when you are ready this should be the first place you go. And when you do, this magic cove and incredible vibe will be waiting for you.
We will definitely be back.

La Fortuna is an isolated green slope between Panajachel and Santa Cruz on the northern shores of Lake AtitlĆ”n. It can only be reached by boat and there are just five cabanas for guests so at any given moment itās a small group of visitors staying there.
This could be turned into an advantage, as we have seen in other similar lodges where people having breakfast and dinner together form a tight social unit sharing personal experiences.
But at La Fortuna this doesnāt really work. Many guests prefer to eat in their cabins. The relax points by the beach only has room for one pair each. The only meeting point is the āclub houseā which is nice but not really welcoming or cosy.
And the owners donāt really encourage social interaction either. Itās clear that they prefer guests from USA (they didnāt even welcome us), if they are present at all. They donāt eat with the other guests. They donāt say goodbye when you leave.
Our cabana was labelled a āpetitā one, and sure enough there was room for a bed and not much more. The bathroom is outdoors which can be great, but not when it rains...
The food was generally good, but not fantastic. We had a special new yearās dinner which was in parts a disaster. Not just because the potatoes were raw, and the meat was tasteless but also because it started at 6pm and was all over at 8pm. During the four hours until 00:00 we had to entertain ourselves, neither of the owners were there. Over all, being so close to nature is a great thing, but you also need to make some effort for the guests to feel like theyāre really welcome and part of something special.

We stayed in the most deluxe bungalow (the one with the private infinity pool) and I can't imagine anywhere else in my life ever topping it. We had only booked 2 nights and even though it is also the most expensive place we have ever stayed we just had to extend another night (and just let our other hotel reservation in San Pedro go without any refund XD) because it was just that amazing. Waking up to the delicious breakfast delivery and eating it in your living room with the view of the lake is literally heaven on earth. One night we were there we were lucky enough to experience an epic thunderstorm and watching the lightning over the volcano across the lake all night long is one of my favorite travel memories ever. The only downside was that when we were there there were no other guests staying on the entire property (or at least they did not eat dinner in the main lodge) so all 3 nights we ate dinner alone, so it was a bit isolated, but the owners did join us on our last night. I would recommend this to anyone

I don't even know where to start raving about this place. I've traveled 6 continents and have been lucky enough to stay in some beautiful accommodations but this place is next level. If you really want to inspire envy across all your social media channels, this is the place - especially Bungalow 5 which is hands down the best value for money property I've ever seen. So much care and attention to detail has gone into everything on this property, you can tell it is very much a labor of love for the owners. And speaking of the owners, you can't ask for nicer hosts!! The food is great, there's even a wine cellar! Finally, you can't forget the dogs - Sansa, Sacha and Biscuit are just the best.
Lake Atitlan is magical on its own but if you really want to take it up a level, stay here!!

This is the first spot my fiance and I visited as soon as Guatemala started (slowly) reopening for tourism. It wasn't our first visit, and based on the standards I saw previusly I knew I could trust it for a peaceful, isolated, safe, hygienic, and worry-free escape.
It definitely won't be our last visit, either. That's because every single time, La Fortuna is one of those places where when the water taxi turns into the private bay, and we see the thatched roof of the reception building nestled in between the soaring cliffs, we turn to each other and say, "How is this our life?"
What's more, that feeling never fades while we're there. Whether we we're sipping house-grown coffee and eating macadamia pancakes on the porch of our bungalow, or drinking mimosas on the dock, or swimming and throwing sticks for the dogs in the perfectly clear 73Ā° water, it's All. Just. Perfect. The owners' impeccable taste and the staff's friendly, unobtrusive attention to detail made our stay at La Fortuna, once again, the perfect getaway.

This hotel was one of the reasons we decided to visit lake atitlan and we are glad we stayed
Everything from the staff, service, dogs lol, property, etc is perfect I have no complains. Our room deluxe suite 5 was amazing and is the only room on property with its own pool. The bathroom is an open concept and we loved taking showers with the volcano view. The dogs were lovely and very playful sometimes they will show up at our room in the morning. I had so much fun playing with them especially by the lake throwing toys or fruits in the water lol food was also very good but I have to say the staff was what made our stay even better, so nice and attentive. Had an amazing birthday stay and we will def comeback and stay at la fortuna de atitlan
Thank you guys for everything

After a long hiatus from international travel (because of covid) I asked my best friend to join me for a long weekend in Guatemala (we hadnāt seen each other for almost 2 years). I discovered La Fortuna at AtitlĆ”n on Instagram and decided to book our stay there. I emailed Kat a couple of questions before booking our stay and she was always quick with her replies and very transparent. She even helped arrange airport transfers and a sunrise hike with a guide. We stayed in Suite 1 which was beautifully situated on the lakeās edge with amazing views. One of the most unique parts of the Suite was the outdoor bathroom (completely private), which honestly wasnāt an issue. If anything I felt a bit of freedom! We took full advantage of all of La Fortunaās amenities: paddle boarding, dip in the pool, relaxing seating areas around the lake, incredible views, magical sunrises, and delicious meals! Oh yea, and their 3 pupsā¦Iām an animal lover so that was an added bonus. It was the perfect place to be during a global pandemic: staff wore masks, we ate all of our meals on our porch, very little contact with others, etc! If/when I get back to Lake AtitlĆ”n, I will be staying at La Fortuna againā¦Iām already missing it!

I have been waiting to visit La Fortuna for over ten years, and it was as stunning as I hoped it would be! We stayed in bungalow 5, and were so impressed with everything including the grounds, the dƩcor and attention to detail in the bungalow, the staff service (extra special shout-out to Aldo who was so friendly), and the delicious and affordable meals and drinks! The owners were not there at the time, but Kat was great and fast to reply to all of my questions via email prior to our trip. My advice to those planning a visit; stay at the resort! There are plenty of paddleboards and kayaks for those who need some activity/exercise. Everything you need is there and it is paradise!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights in Suite 1 and Petite 4 Bungalow - either space is highly recommended! As some others have said, details are extremely well thought out and each cabin has its own charm and all feel very private.
We absolutely loved the food there as well, and that meals could be taken in the dining room or the outdoor seating space of the rooms. The desserts were sublime and I looked forward to getting the menu every afternoon, was often hard to choose as everything was appealing. We enjoyed meeting other guests over dinner in the dining room, I suggest doing that a few evenings even if it is tempting to snuggle up in the loft.
A huge thank you to everyone working there - the team was hospitality minded and genuinely happy to help us enjoy the property and the lake as a whole. Always smiling and patient with my millions of questions before check in and during the stay :)
