We stayed at Villa Sumaya for a week for a yoga retreat and had an amazing experience. Our room was spacious and lovely, with a view of the lake and volcanos. The grounds were so inviting, with different seating arrangements, hot tubs and a pool. And the dining room was spacious and comfortable, with views of the lake. All of The staff we interacted with were helpful and friendly, and, of course, the food was fabulous. We had vegetarian meals 3x/day for 7 days and never missed fish or poultry. Every meal was different and plentiful. We also had the opportunity to hike to a nearby village and to take local boats to visit both an amazing eco farm and a village with crafts, weaving, coffee and honey.
We were on a group yoga retreat -- I was a little scared, to be honest. The place -- visually spectacular. I've attached the photo out of window of our studio. I was afraid of "vegetarian diet" -- food was awesome -- diverse, and consistently good and filling. Room -- awesome views, very comfortable king sized bed. Cleaning staff top notch. We did three of their activity tours (EcoFarm, bird watch, kayak/hike) -- guides all good to great, learned a lot and fully enjoyed. The only comment -- be prepared to go up and down A LOT -- it's all very steep as you go away from the lake, it's not a place to go if you can't handle stairs.
This is a beautiful place with fantastic organic food and a kind and responsive staff. It overlooks Lake Atitlan and volcanos. it is NOT warm - we often had fleeces on as it is 5K feet. I had an mnazing suite that was sumptuous. Lovely side trips, great leaders, especially the Fire Ceremonny with Tomas - don't miss it. Others enjoyed the sweat lodge too.
I stayed at Villa Sumaya for a week with a private tour. The rooms were very comfortable, the food was amazing - every day, every meal. The staff were all chill and helpful and the amenities were so unique from a Mayan fire ceremony to ancestral massage. I highly recommend this spot for your next spiritual retreat.
I stayed at Villa Sumaya for a solo trip (initially, then a friend joined me because I raved about the beauty of the place so much!). The place is beautiful and peaceful, the staff are incredibly kind and helpful, the garden is magical, the pool and hot tub help unwind and the access and view of the lake makes you feel very special. It is a perfect secluded place to relax, I would go back in a heartbeat.
Setting: Absolutely paradisiacal. Went in March, the dry season, on the altoplano, no mosquitos! Yet with all the feeling of a lush tropical place with ample greenery, flowers, and birdsong. Perfect temperature, almost bizarrely perfect temperature, never sweated, never needed a jacket. Actually presents better than it photographs. Absolutely gorgeous and meticulously maintained gardens. Lovely rooms, many had their unique flavor, all well sited to give you privacy. All yoga areas had amazing views and just felt relaxing and beautiful. Lots of little seating areas scattered around, you will always find a serene private place for yourself. Lovely resident dogs and cat. Santa Cruz is a little sleepy down-to-earth town with great views, a nice, reasonable, scenic walk away (2 methods: seaside or gardenside) Wifi (if necessary): Perfectly fine if you stay close to the office, there is a lovely seating area at the Apothecary for that, though I will admit most people weren't using it which may have made it faster for me. Enough to listen in on a Zoom if not participate in it with video. Not being very strong in the rooms is good for digital detox. Food: Excellent, and inspiring to those considering vegetarianism. Service: Outstanding, each and every staff person encountered. For the contractors, I did a solo retreat so only had personal yoga classes and bodywork, cannot speak about the ceremonies, and had good experiences with all. Very much enjoyed deep tissue massage with Robert. I've travelled a lot and like variety and novelty, but I said to myself at the end of the week, I need to come back here. It is a very special place. Rm 10: Topmost bunglalow, you'll get a daily calf exercises getting up there, but nice view and feels very private, no one can see you up there. After walking around, I don't really think there are any bad rooms and that they are accurately in the website.…
Very special place with stunning views of the volcanos. Friendly, helpful , bilingual staff. The rooms are very unique . Our bed was so comfortable, I had a hard time leaving it. After having a deep tissue massage with Dina I felt like a new person. We had a chance to meet the owner who is a beautiful person inside out. Can't wait to be back!
My partner and I visited Villa Sumaya over the New Year and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. When it was time to check out, I tried to think of any suggestion of improvement or complaint I might have, but I honestly could not come up with anything. The location was exactly what we had been looking for. Close enough to walk to Santa Cruz, but still quiet and serene, right on the water. The staff was wonderful - incredibly communicative before we arrived and beyond helpful the entire time we were there. Gorgeous views and community spaces. Perhaps the biggest highlight, however, was the food. Absolutely delicious! I looked forward to every single meal. I cannot recommend Villa Sumaya enough. I would love to return one day for another retreat.
Perfect hotel and venue for a yoga retreat. The hotel has all the amenities needed for yoga and meditation, plus the food was delicious! The Atitlan setting is gorgeous, the volcanos and the lake are beautiful. The hotel staff is really great.
We first visited VIlla Sumaya in Nov 2019 for a lunch and afternoon visit. We reserved a week for 2020 on the spot and after delaying our trip last year, Were able to finally experience this beautiful place last week for private retreat. As we settled in and explored, we were quite taken by the exquisite attention given to every detail from the beautiful stonework to the lighting throughout and so much more. the meals were the highest quality in the vegetarian culinary world. my partner and I have both participated in numerous retreats through the years and we've never tasted fruit like this. cannot wait to use the recipes in the cookbook. I loved getting up first thing and going to the yoga platform overlooking the lake for my morning practice and my partner found various beautiful spots for his morning meditation. at least three or four nights here will certainly be a part of our future travels to this beautiful part of the world.…
