For an area that is bursting with beauty, history and superb food it would take somewhere special to stand out. Castel Merle embodies all of these qualities in abundance but adds more with welcoming, convivial hosts, quality accomodation with a rustic touch and the most stunning location imaginable. This cosy, atmospheric hotel is perched high above the River Vezere (a...

We booked into this auberge on the spur of the moment near the end of a month in France - it is situated overlooking the beautiful Vezere Valley the home of foie gras, chateaux and the Lascoux caves. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful, the room very clean and comfortable and homey. The food was brilliant. We extended our...

We stayed for a couple of days at the end of a trip round the Dordogne. It was the best value of all the places we stayed and the food was fantastic. I still dream of that chicken in white wine sauce the first night - it was simple but perfect. Provincial cooking at its best. The terrace and the...

We were told about Castel Merle by friends who had stayed a few years ago. We decided that we wanted a relaxing break so booked rooms at the end of the season. This place has it all. The food is traditional perigordian fare served in large portions, washed down with excellent vin de pays. The value for money is impressive....

The proprietors are lovely and very welcoming. The food was delicious. We were only here one night but I would definitely go...

I had rarely heard my husband speak of any hotel with such effusive compliments as he has of Castel-Merle. We returned to the Auberge Castel-Merle again in May because we often dreamed of our 4 previous stays …the gorgeous views, the wonderfully delicious food & the warm hospitality of our hosts, English-speaking Anita and Christopher, who are delighted to share...

Spent two nights here during a solo holiday in the Dordogne. My plan was to rest and do some writing. As it happened I did little writing but had a lot of rest. This is a most special place to stay in a magnificent setting. Like others I got a little lost along the way but quickly found it in...

We stayed 3 nights in May and loved it. Looking back, all I can really remember is the excellent food! Melt-in-your-mouth Beef Stew, Duck and Sausage Cassoulet. And finished off with walnut ice cream dessert. Please don't skip out on the demi-pension. It is perched high atop a cliff overlooking the valley, making a lovely view. The hosts are warm...

Great value, great hosts and a beautiful setting. Total peace and quiet, we came away totally rested. We used it as a base and travelled each day to nearby tourist attractions, most within a 45 minute drive, returning in the evening for dinner. The weather was perfect so we sat out in he garden with the amazing views over the...
