Detailed Reviews
Had a great stay at the Tara Hotel, food was excellent for Dinner and breakfast, with very friendly and helpful staff.
Only element to improve is the toilet situation. A communal key card was required to open the toilets from the bar and restaurant - although the staff wipe these cards down after use, a more hygienic system is required

Lovely hotel in the centre of things in Killybegs. Many of the rooms overlook the water (mine didn’t sadly!) and there’s a small carpark attached which was helpful as the streets are quite narrow for those not used to them. My stay overall was pretty good - the room was clean and comfy and dinner in the adjoining pub/restaurant was just beautiful. Staff were all very helpful and seemed to be local so knew the area very well and were able to help with recommendations/directions. I felt the room rate was a little expensive for the quality of the room so probably wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again but if you need to be in Killybegs for any reason it’s a nice spot to rest your head.

Very nice hotel in Killybegs. Room was clean and nice. Hotel staff were excellent! We were looking for a place for dinner and they recommended an Asian restaurant and a pub with live music both of which we enjoyed. They also provided tips of other places to see, one of which was a little hidden beach we never would have seen. Lots of breakfast options. The view of the harbor from our room was great!!

First impressions poor there was building work going on which we were not informed about. We had booked two rooms only to be told there was a mix up and only one room ready there was a problem with the water in the other room, eventually the rooms were ready after half an hour. When we got to the rooms more disappointment the rooms are very tried and in need of a renovation, curtains hanging off the rail, bed cover stained outer door dirty marks, we had an outside area which was dreadful weeds and rubbish not a nice area to sit. After speaking to the manager we got a very good reduction on the price of the rooms which for that we were very grateful. On the positive side the staff in this hotel are fantastic very helpful and friendly, one of the members of staff very kindly got us a reservation at the boathouse restaurant which was amazing. The breakfast at the hotel was very good although the noise from the building work not so good. I know they are renovating the hotel and I think when it is finished this will be a lovely hotel.

Have stayed a good few times same room all the time the tara suite, fantastic. One big disappointment was no disability access which was a big problem for us having to go up steps, secondly only hand sanitizer was on entry to the hotel none near the lift or bar/restaurant none on tables. When we arrived to our room no milk 1 cup no coffee no glasses in the bathroom and 2 towels. To add to our disappointment service was so slow, when eventually ordered food was very quick to appear but when finished we actually had to ask for our plates to be taken away. If you decide to stay here bring your own hand sanitizer and would also recommend you get room service for your breakfast extra cost but more choice. Would I stay here again after so many visits no.

Booked this hotel for the purpose of hiking in the area. No problem getting a parking space in the harbour opposite. The receptionist who checked us in was friendly and as we were on a 2 night, 1 dinner deal she gave us a small card to present to the waiting staff at dinner and pointed out the restaurant to us. Upon entering our room the first thing we noticed was a large yellow stain on the single bed that was in the room. We weren’t using that bed so not really an issue. The room in general was clean but the shower curtain smelt very strongly of damp and the toilet made a horrendous noise at the end of a flush. Also, the toilet seat did not fit properly. We went to the bar an hour before dinner to have a cocktail only to be told they weren’t doing them. Looked like there was plenty of staff so not sure of the reason behind this. Headed to the restaurant for dinner to be told that we had to eat in the bar. So back we went. There was only a bar menu available despite the restaurant menu being on their website. We handed the waitress the card that had been given to us at reception for the meal - she didn’t know what it was and no one else appeared to either. It took half an hour for the starters to arrive which was the gratin and chowder. Good portions and tasted nice. For mains we opted for the salmon and the risotto. The potatoes were bland and for some reason chips (not very nice) were served with the risotto. But the fish was tasty and a decent portion. When the plates were cleared we weren’t asked if we wanted dessert. I don’t think you should have to ask to see a dessert menu as surely it would be common sense to offer it along with the offer of tea/coffee? Breakfast was served in the bar or restaurant. Handed paper menus which were stained and one of our cups had a crack right through it. The table didn’t look like it had been wiped either. There is no mention of cereal, fresh fruit, toast etc on the menu so you have to ask for those as well as juice. I had poached eggs and bacon. The bacon was undercooked and the eggs had obviously been lifted straight out of the water and onto the plate without being drained as I had to mop up the poaching water with a napkin. The eggs were overcooked as well and looked nothing like a poached egg. Hubby had the smoked salmon and scrambled egg which he really enjoyed. Upon checking out they tried to charge us firstly for the drinks we’d had in the bar over the two nights - we had paid at the time and could prove it and then also tried to charge for the dinner as well!! But it was quickly resolved without argument. In general the staff were friendly but overall there seemed to be a lack of cohesiveness. Shockingly overpriced hotel. (We paid a similar price for an exceptional 4 star hotel in Cavan which included two dinners).

family group staying in Killybegs for New Year so limited in places open.
Had booked in advance and yet group was split over 2 tables when tables could have been joined.
Waited an hour for food, children were really hungry. Food was luke warm at best. Three of the group ordered steak and rest of group had finished eating by time theirs arrived. They didn't get the sides ordered but were too hungry to wait on changing.
Checked bill after and had been charged for an extra dinner and sides which didn't come.
Very pricey considering quality and service.
Gave on star for the view

It’s nice enough though rooms are a little tired and breakfast needs a little more imagination - dreadful coffee.( forget the hotel breakfast and head to Mrs B’s in the town - and do try shack on the quay for some great seafood) . Great location though they seem to be building something on the quay to block the view. The staff of course are wonderful , friendly and welcoming.

I was told this bar and restaurant was really nice. It was very quiet when we came in and got seated immediately. We were given menus and were left for 15-20 mins without a waiter even asking for our orders, not even a drinks order. Our server who brought us to our table, brought cutlery down to another table that already had a server on it. We questioned could we get someone to take our order and eventually got served.
A grey haired lady who seemed to be a supervisor ignored us on two or three occasions asking other tables around us was everything ok. We waited 30 mins for our starters. And got served our food but no water for the table at all. Our food was served before we got a jug of water.
We were given a new server a brown haired lady who was really nice. And the young man who took our order also came across as really nice too. It’s the supervisor (grey haired woman) who seemed to ignore us that made us feel very unwelcome. And overall it came across as unprofessional.
Me and my partner discussed staying in the hotel in the near future but this really would turn someone away. We walked away disappointed. The food was ok, but it was eaten after waiting over an hour and fifteen mins for a main course on a quiet day.

All through the lockdown of Covid 19 all I longed for was to relax in my favourite spot and look out at the fishing boats as they load and unload from the comfort of an easy chair in the lounge of the Tara. We went in and sat at a table with a view as we did many times in the past. My partner ordered her usual vegetarian breakfast and I ordered a small Irish breakfast. Well I almost cried when it was served, the white and black pudding were burnt beyond recognition. The sausage was like a long steel bolt that my knife could barely get through. The only thing freshly made on the plate was a small slice of bacon that was beautifully cooked and the egg. We never even got toast with either breakfast, what a joke. The waitress was told of our dissatisfaction but discounted nothing from the bill. I can't believe how low the standards have dropped so soon after re-opening. I'm going to have to move to a different place I fear.
