We didn't stay at Newport House but had dinner there. There's an enchantment about a place that is so authentic and has managed to stay so true to itself despite the commercial pressures they must operate under as every hotel/restaurant does. It was a bit like stepping into a museum, certainly like being in a different world for an evening, yet there's a warmth there between the friendly welcome and fires burning in the grates in each room. We were a bit early and were shown into a reception room by the bar where we relaxed and took in the surroundings. Then to the dining room with its wonderful old ceilings, windows (some still have the uneven old glass), curtains, paintings etc. We enjoyed a delicious meal, everything was impeccably prepared and presented by the fantastic staff. After dinner we were served coffee - the best of decaffeinated coffee - and home-made sweets by the fire in the drawing room. From beginning to end it was a truly memorable experience. On a more prosaic note, the bill came to under €70 a head which I'd normally consider to be too much to pay for a meal; however I doubt if it could be done for less considering what must be pretty horrendous overheads to keep an old house still looking amazing after a something like a quarter of a millennium.

Beautiful old house in a great location - but it could do with some modernization of the basic services. It’s spotlessly clean throughout- but just a little jaded. However the ambiance, welcome and service are fantastic. Our dinner was a major surprise- with every course being truly flavorsome and very attractively presented. It’s a brilliant advertisement for the best of Irish ingredients. Highly recommended.

In a wonderful location overlooking the Newport River as it opens into Clew Bay this hotel is an absolute gem. Big comfortable rooms in and elegant country house with a great welcome for fishermen, holidaymakers and travellers alike. The food is absolutely exceptional with great local ingredients cooked with great skill. Oysters Rockefeller and a delicately cooked turbot stood out this time. A very smart wine list indeed which doesn't have to break the bank .

Lovely place, great dinner with lovely wine, great service and surroundings. Overlooking a beautiful river. It’s like stepping back in time to the most elegant house. With all the memorabilia there for everyone to see really makes you feel part of it all.

Though we didn’t end up staying here as my father was much too large for their beds at 6 foot/ 182 cen. We did end up joining them for a fantastic 4 course meal with the most amazing desserts! We stayed at a hotel winthin walking distance and the whole experience was perfection from start to finish. I even got to wear the nice dress I packed! The staff were lovely and helpful and gave us an overview of all of history of this gem of a hotel. I’m lucky to have been trained in which fork etc to use in such a formal setting but though my companion did not, they did not make us feel out of place what so ever. Definitely recommend for a special occasion or a fancy night out in the area.

We arrived here out of the blue, not realising that the hotel does not really cater to random callers arriving looking for food mid day. However we were made to feel very welcome by the very nice receptionist, who explained that they do evening dinner by reservation, and they also have guests staying. She generously offered to make us a cup of tea. She kindly showed us in to a lovely sitting room with open fire burning brightly, and invited us to sit and relax. She served delicious home made biscuits, and proper tea made with tea leaves in a silver tea pot! Tray, sugar bowl, jug and water pot were all beautiful silver! The bar, dining room and other sitting room were all delightful. Thank you for this lovely treat, for a VERY reasonable price, even though we were not expected to walk in unannounced!

Yes - we know this is known as a great fishing house but there are a couple of world class golf courses nearby - Carne, Westport & Connemara and so we did a repeat visit from three years ago. The hotel is top drawer for both accommodations, service and food. Definitely a great stay and they were very accommodating to help us book the golf dates and tee times.

My husband and I have just had another lovely stay at Newport House. It is such a delight to return. Many of the same faces, lovely room and, of course, delicious food. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

From the moment we entered till the moment we left we were attentively looked after. The receptionist brought tea to our room which was beautifully clean and spacious with a very generous four poster bed. Dinner was excellent and the wine list extensive. My only adverse comment would be the toast at breakfast was shop bought sliced bread. We only eat fruit and toast for breakfast so it is fairly important to us. Nevertheless I would highly recommend the hotel and thank the staff for making our stay so very pleasant.
