we booked to stay at the Norfolk Mead as I was keen to see my parents who I hadn't seen since the start of lockdown, but our house is too small to socially distance and is too far for them to travel just for the day.
We booked the Norfolk Mead as thought their Summer House suites meant that we could easily social distance from other guests, and the private patios meant we would feel comfortable sitting outside together. It worked perfectly, the hotel appeared to have a rigorous covid cleaning policy, with screens noted in reception, rooms were cold fogged and left with windows open, and hotel staff wearing masks and gloves.
We opted to always have room service which worked well with our meals being brought to our private patio. One evening when it was a bit rainy, the lounge area of crab apple was large enough for us to eat our dinner inside maintaining social distance. The dinners in particular were a very high standard with lovely ingredients and thoughtfully prepared. The hotel grounds were peaceful and quiet for short walks after dinner, and longer walks were also possible from the hotel.
The relaxing and safe experience the hotel offered is exactly what myself and my husband needed having spent the last few months working in the NHS, and provided the safe place we wanted to see family after a long time apart, thank you very much.

We had a perfect break here. Our room was spacious and comfortable the shower was great although the ultra modern bath shape was challenging .
The menu was very varied and interesting and obviously delivered with skill and passion.Bread was home made and delicious and the coffee was first rate, which is always a bonus as sometimes hotels tend to skimp on coffee quality.
The breakfasts were fresh and featured fresh fruits, breads and cooked items including delicious kippers from Yarmouth.I was really impressed that all the breads .croissant fruits and yogurts were all under cloches and so protected from sneezes and insects.
Staff were very friendly and helpful and it was obvious everyone was keen for you to have a relaxing and luxurious break, which we did .Thanks.

Return trip hired hotel boat for £90 which gets you four hours which is enough time to get you to Roxham village and buy a couple of beers etc.
Food pics are the fillet main and chicken for eg pics😏
We stayed in one of the chalet cabin type rooms again very nice but wow heat was crazy. Mad weather this hotel doesn’t do aircon but the crazy day heat wasn’t hotel problem.
Flies in restaurant we’re an issue just mountains of them which were annoying. Food as ever was stunning as were staff. Only two downsides checking it with incorrect items on bill plus discounts not added this was proving quite a problem for poor fella checking everyone out.
Finally cleanliness - noticed copious amount of cobwebs filled with dead flies in room and restaurant shame really everything else was excellent.

If I were to write separate reviews for our stay at the hotel and restaurant, the restaurant would be 5 stars and the hotel stay, 4.

The hotel has a relaxed atmosphere and all the staff we dealt with were helpful, friendly, and full of enthusiasm. But there were quite a few minor things that meant that the hotel in general fell short of the perfect 5. Firstly, parts of the décor seemed a bit tired – not all of it by any means but a bit of carpet here, a lampshade there mean that there are holes in the comfort and luxury aspirations.

We were impressed with the flavour of the ‘house’ coffee in the room, complete with cafetière and two large coffee cups. But the cafetière was only large enough to fill one of the cups (or two of them could be half filled) – and only one coffee pouch for the cafetière (the other was decaf). Probably better to have smaller cups but the arrangement didn't seem well thought through.

At the time of making the reservation, I asked if we could book some spa treatments – the spa team didn’t contact us and when I contacted them again to book some treatments two weeks before we arrived, they couldn’t fit us in.

The wifi is from the dark ages – when it does work you have to keep renewing your login every so often. But most of the time it doesn’t work well and we were lucky if we got between 2 and 15 minutes before ‘no service’.

Noise from the loudspeakers in the dining room; noise from the laundry room; an impractical (but highly photogenic) bath; a dispenser not working; heating on/not on …. on their own each of these niggles are nothing, really. But they just accumulated. They didn’t spoil what was a relaxing weekend stay but it didn’t quite live up to expectations. I don’t want to concentrate on negative things and I'd rather be constructive as it is a lovely old building in a lovely setting and as I said, the staff were fantastic.

The dining, though, was the stand out for us and far exceeded expectations. Tremendous value fine dining with a high level of execution from the kitchen, pushing a few boundaries as well. That meant that not every aspect of every meal worked (such as smoked beetroot with the duck, in my opinion) but a true delight to dine there.

We were celebrating 50 years together this weekend, obviously with lockdown restrictions going out for a meal was not going to happen. We ordered afternoon tea for 2 from the Norfolk Mead Hotel and collected it by driving to the door. A friendly employee put the box in our car boot and collected the envelope of money waiting there. We all wore masks. Felt very safe at this arrangement.
The tea was really great, beautifully presented with minimum plastic packaging and most items lovingly wrapped in paper or cardboard with brown string. It all looked so lovley and tasted fantastic. We particularly liked the berry cheesecake, the thick slices of ham and the brownies. Now we want the restrictions to end so we can go back and sample a meal there and sit outside by the river in the summer. Well done, we are glad to support you in this great idea.

We were lucky enough to pick up a one night stay at short notice. It was our first stay, and having the previous night stayed at Dunston Hall, which promised so much but delivered so little (see my review of that establishment), were not sure exactly what to expect.

We could tell from the moment we arrived, that we were going to have a very different experience to the previous hotel. The receptionist was friendly and efficient, and showed us to our room, explaining on the way where various amenities were. We had booked the Horseradish room which was one of there standard rooms, and although small (which we knew it would be) was very comfortably furnished, with everything we needed including very luxurious toiletries. A complimentary tray of tea, coffee and brownies, with the added touch of small bottles of fresh milk available from a small fridge.

The hotel is situated in vast gardens next to the River Bure, and after going for a wander in the grounds we decided to have a drink on the terrace. A very pleasant Aperol Spritz over looking the formal part of the gardens.

We had also booked dinner, which was just a well as we heard a later arrival being told that the restaurant was full that evening. When the time came for dinner, we were asked if we would like a pre-dinner drink while perusing the menus, drinks were served with olives and home made cheese straws in the comfortable bar. Perusing the menu was where my difficulties began, there were so many very delicious looking dishes it was incredibly hard to make a decision (settled on Crab followed by Duck breast). My husband who has a gluten free diet was told that anything (apart from the pigeon wellington) could be adapted for him and he settled on Scallops followed by Seabass (which he said was the best he had ever tasted). Desert was as difficult to choose from but Creme Brulee and Chocolate/orange mousse were selected. This was all served by very friendly staff in the dining room with I think 7 tables. There did also appear to be a further dining room being used, so plenty of space between tables. All in all the meal was sublime, and breakfast the next morning was equally as good.

The location was incredibly quiet and we had a fantastic nights sleep. At checkout time there was a small issue with what had already been paid via Booking.com, but this was quickly and efficiently resolved. Indeed at the time of checkout if they had had any vacancies for the next 3 nights I would have been more than happy to stay for the remainder of our holiday (unfortunately they didn’t).

I have a favourite hotel at Lake Garda, against which I always tend to judge other hotels, The Norfolk Mead might well have just exceeded all my expectations!

We booked this hotel for three nights at short notice after our holiday abroad had been cancelled (again) to provide a country escape from life as it is at the moment.

The exterior of the hotel and grounds are impressive, and we received a warm welcome from the staff. All guidelines for managing Covid are clearly explained and we were shown to our room which had been ‘fogged’ and was spotlessly clean.

Our room was Sorrel which was spacious and has ample storage for clothes. It has a lovely en suite with rain shower head. Only negative was that the room only has a view over the flat roof on top of the kitchen where the extraction pipes are, but I can honestly say there was no disruption from noise at any time or smell. Generally it was a really comfortable room.

There is a lovely garden to sit and have a drink or enjoy afternoon tea (which looked very good value!)

We ate in the restaurant two nights as well as having breakfast there. Fabulous food, you can really taste the quality of the ingredients as well as the culinary skill.

Afterwards we sat in the bar for a nightcap and felt truly spoilt by the super staff. If only all hotels could provide this kind of service in such extraordinary times.

There is real heart in the way this hotel looks after it’s guests. Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer & that we had to leave.

We have just returned from a one night stay at The Norfolk Mead and wanted to write a review as my husband and I had such a wonderful visit . We stayed in one of the superior rooms which was luxurious and comfortable. The bathroom had beautiful toiletries, super soft large towels and robes and we enjoyed the homemade chocolate brownies and fresh milk in the fridge. The hotel has lots of small lounge areas where we enjoyed post walk and pre dinner drinks.
Our evening meal was absolutely outstanding and we also enjoyed a delicious breakfast. The next morning we both had relaxing treatments at the spa which were highly recommended. All the staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and welcoming. Thank you everyone at The Norfolk Mead.

We had an enjoyable stay here for a few nights in June.

The hotel is set in lovely grounds where you can walk to and along the river Bure, and the walled garden is delightful place to sit and relax when it is sunny. It is a great base to explore the Norfolk Broads and Norwich.

The evening meals are amazing and very good value for the standard of food. We enjoyed two dinners and couldn't name a stand out dish as they were all excellent.
Breakfast service was swift and the food reasonable. I would have preferred a small glass of freshly squeezed orange juice to a large glass of concentrated.

Most of our issues revolved around our room, Rosehip. It is a beautifully decorated room and the bed is very comfortable but it has a big noise problem. It is over reception so you can hear every telephone ring and one sided conversation. Early in the morning as the staff arrive cheerily calling "Good morning" to each other it feels like they are in the room with you. This is not relaxing!
The bathroom lighting is atrocious, very dim. It is marginally better in the bedroom. The heavy chair in front of the window blocks the light and access to the wardrobe, but on the other hand maybe prevents other guests observing you so well from the carpark below.
It was good to have bottles of water supplied but no glasses to drink from? Perhaps that is related to the unusual rule that corkage should be paid on bottles of wine brought in to consume in your room.

One other personal little niggle was being persistently referred to as "You guys" by the serving staff.

We are often in this area and would stay here again but not in Rosehip.

For the first time ever I need more than five stars!! But as five is all I have available that will have to do.
I have just come home from a two night stay at the Norfolk Mead Hotel (all we could get I’m afraid as they were so busy) and just don’t know where to start with this review other than to say it’s the best place I have stayed - ever.
Room was a comfortable temperature and tastefully furnished, there were thoughtful snacks in the room, dressing gowns, slippers, huge fluffy towels, all the toiletries you could need. And that’s just the room.
All the staff, and I mean all of them, were lovely, smiley, helpful and actually seemed to really enjoy working there.
The food was out of this world, and I loved the way there were lots of miniature items at breakfast so I could try lots of things without overdoing it.
And if that wasn’t enough there was the most amazing spa where Rebecca made my shoulders feel slightly less knotty (she had her work cut out I can tell you) and made my feet look beautiful.
This is the most perfect place to come for a romantic weekend or short break - or even a long break for that matter!
It’s rare for me not to be ready to come home after a few nights but I could happily have stayed at the Norfolk Mead for about 3 and a half weeks I reckon!!
I will definitely be back and plan to try every room!!

Yes, you should as, due to the excellent quality, the restaurant is very popular with local people and the bookings are on first come first served basis. I don’t believe tables are automatically reserved for residents. You might miss out on a fantastic dining experience!

Good question , it is u likely, as the area is well catered for with great river run offs being in the Broads but it is best to check directly with the hotel. I last stayed there I the height of the winter and there was not a problem.
