This 18th century country house is set in its own grounds near the Galloway Forest Park, which is a "Dark Sky" area (.i.e. great for stargazing) The house has many original period features including the original main stair case with "modesty boards" so that gentlemen could not see the ladies' ankles as they ascended the stair! Please note, also, that...

Spent two nights there with friends. By far the best service in any hotel we have ever stayed in! From arrival (greeted at the door) to departure, nothing was any trouble. The food was AMAZING and for the first time ever, we asked to speak to the chef to tell him how much we enjoyed our meals! This is an...

Staff on duty extremely welcoming with excellent attention to detail, the hotel is fortunate to have them! The food was well cooked and presented but narrow menu choice. Could be improved by adding more choice i.e. 5 instead of three main course choices. Perhaps a complementary soup course before starter? Again the nibbles offered with pre dinner drinks of a...

We visited for a weekend in the Galloway Forest Park and got a good deal at Kirroughtree House Hotel. When we arrived the staff were welcoming and showed us to our large room on the ground floor with a key for the back entrance so we could take our dog in and out. The room itself was very comfortable, the...

We had our wedding ceremony and reception at Kirroughtree House on October 1st 2016. We had the most amazing day from start to finish. The venue is the perfect place for a small family wedding . The hotel has 16 rooms so we filled it with our family and friends, which gave our day the best atmosphere being all together...

My wife and I spent two nights in this Country House hotel just outside Newton Stewart. The views from the hotel are great, overlooking forest one way and a golf course on the other side. We were initially offered a standard room with a great view but decided to upgrade to an enormous room at the rear of the building...

Nice big room with 4 poster bed in a hotel with beautiful gardens makes you feel special. Dinner menu is a fixed (high, but good value) price and a good place for a special meal out. Wait on the comfy sofas in the lounge order your food, enjoy a cocktail before being escorted to your table. The whole experience works...

We were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary and had previously had a very pleasant 2 night stay almost three years ago. The driveway had several very deep potholes. However, on arrival we were greeted by a lovely member of staff who showed us to a really nice bedroom. She was also very helpful when we were unsure how to access...

We were expecting this review and note that the reviewer is a new recruit to the band of regular reviewers. It is unfortunate that this booking came out of the blue and for a night when our other guests were booked for bed and breakfast and did not take dinner. There were no other witnesses to the occasion. We do...

We arrived in the afternoon entering up a driveway in need of potholes requiring filling and then was shown to our room ,quite outdated and in need of a revamp in all directions although it was clean and tidy. The staff were attentive but were stressed as the hotel could have done with a bit more experience in serving meals .We...

We find this review somewhat disappointing. Our staff are familiar with all of our regular guests including their likes and dislikes. This reviewer was previously unknown to our staff and did not show up as a guest in the records. These go back over 10 years. We were also surprised by it. The reviewer had commented to our staff in...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A country house hotel, a former private mansion house dating back to the 1700's, sitting within 8 acres of its own gardens, a golf course adjacent. It is located near to the picturesque town of Newton Stewart built on the banks of the River Cree, and is within walking distance of the Galloway forest and hills. There is not only a variety of walks around the town and through the forest, but great cycling tracks as well. Slightly further away are a number of historical sights and the Machar Peninsular. On the Machar peninsular you will find the Booktown of Wigtown famous for its annual book festival, picturesque ports, a cave that was occupied by an early Christian Missionary to the Area, a bird sanctuary and the furthest south whisky distillery in Scotland. The Mull of Galloway, the most southerly point in Scotland, is not far away with its bird life and views to Ireland and the Isle of Man. If the magical village of Brigadoon was to appear this is where it would be. ... more   less
