We have just had a wonderful stay at this gorgeous hotel for Christmas. Our stay here felt like a home from home, very quiet and relaxing, very clean and attention to detail is excellent. It is a very comfortable hotel with cosy areas to relax in. The room was spacious, we booked a premium double and the bathroom was also large with Victorian style fittings and a lovely roll top bath. Everything ran smoothly and all the staff including the manager Ian were so polite and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. I can’t not mention the food which was absolutely exquisite and everything we had imagined it to be. We felt like welcome visitors rather than hotel guests. Thank you to all the staff who worked so hard over Christmas, it was truly appreciated! I’m sure we will return.

Dear Sharon, It was our pleasure to welcome you to our "Home from Home" at Greywalls and Chez Roux, and it was very nice to get to know you over the last week. The team were all thrilled to hear that you had a great time with us here at Greywalls, and asked me to pass on their thanks for the consideration and kindness shown in highlighting their service, and the excellent standard of the cuisine throughout. This is a lovely gesture of reward and acknowledgement of their industry and endeavor in providing a very personal and genuine service. Clearly I am going to be biased, but agree that Greywalls really is a very special property blending timeless and elegant style of a bygone era with a traditional and authentic service. We all look forward to welcoming you back to Greywalls in the near future. Wishing you a happy and enjoyable 2025 ! Warm regards Ian Gray and the Greywalls Team

We just returned from Graywalls where we spent last weekend.
On arrival we were warmly greeted by the manager who explained our room wasn’t ready and seated us in the back garden to have lunch and drinks while we waited for it.
The handover to hospitality team was a bit slow, we waited 20mins for our menus but once we ordered food, it arrived promptly and was delicious.
We were checked in after lunch, reserved dinner table for that evening and were given a tour of the hotel.
Our large double room was very specious and comfortable with beautiful view of the gardens.
Dinner was organised very well, splitting guests into three dining rooms which meant decent space between tables. It felt very safe. The plates were served on side trays to ensure staff were not leaning over guests. The food was delicious, everything from canapés to our crab tortellini starter to fish and duck mains exceeded our expectation. It felt like a real treat after 4 months of lockdown.
Breakfast was equality as good with a la carte selection of freshly squeezed juices, coffees, teas, porridge, fruit salad, full Scottish breakfast and omelette. We chose to have it in a lovely garden room to enjoy a sunny morning. Service was lovely throughout and the manager greeted us at our table, made sure we enjoyed our evening the night before and helped us plan the day ahead.
Overall, it was a great weekend and we would like to thank the team at Graywalls for their hospitality.

We stayed for two nights, midweek, to celebrate my forthcoming birthday. We were a little apprehensive after reading some previous poor reviews however our experience was completely satisfactory. The ever present David looked after our every need, not that we are particularly demanding. We love sitting in front of a real fire either reading or enjoying a beverage or two or simply chatting with other guests. There were two such fires which were set and lit mid afternoon ish and not so busy that we couldn't get a seat and relax. It was soooo cozy that we had to drag ourselves away to get ready for dinner. Our pre dinner cocktails were excellent, the barman, from India, was very detailed and clearly took great pride in his creations. We had dinner both evenings and thoroughly enjoyed all of our choices accompanied with a lovely Italian wine from the Chianti region. The restaurant waiting staff were also Indian, we believe, and could not have been more efficient or helpful. Breakfasts suited us both and had all that we could have asked for, within reason. Our room, number 16, over looked the rear garden and caught the sun in the mornings which we only found out the day we were leaving as we did unfortunately experience an exceptionally rainy day on our full day there, more time in front of the roaring fires. Our room was perfectly acceptable, comfortable bed (pillows were a bit too soft for our liking but not a major problem and we could have asked for firmer pillows I am sure). The shower was as you would expect, worked fine and simple to use. There was a huge mirror above the wash hand basin that could have benefited from more light, not a major issue though. The furnishings were traditional, we found them comfortable and to our taste. Its not a modern hotel, having been a family home, I guess Quaint might describe it best with lots of quirky prints, paintings china and other bits and pieces from the owners history in the property. Several collages showing many of the famous golfers who have stayed at the hotel together with one or two celebrities. We walked round the walled gardens and enjoyed, even this late in the season, the variety of flowers, shrubs and trees, all clearly well looked after. We were able to look over the golf course to the sea when the weather cleared, so calm and peaceful. Many of the other guests that we spoke to were returning guests and we can understand why, I am sure that we will return at some point in the future and perhaps be blessed with better weather.

Being from Edinburgh, I had been many times to Greywalls for tea, lunch and even dinner once. This was my first time to STAY there, for one night, during our month-long driving tour around UK. I We arrived with high hopes, that were quickly dashed. Coming from wonderful Culloden House in Inverness, we were dismayed by the unfriendly and uninterested nature of our arrival to check in. Our room ( I believe it was #5 from memory, was quite adequate, with 3 windows, 2 of which opened directly onto Muirfield golf course. The bathroom was nice, but the bath leaked, despite us having to get the staff to investigate. It never did work. The shower required byzantine operations! The flow of water from the taps in the sink was a trickle. There were cobwebs hanging outside our door. The hotel kept trying to get us to dine there that night, despite the menu having nothing we wanted to eat.(A good friend from the area recommended the Bonnie Badger pub, where we had a great dinner). We paid 438 pounds for one night B&B, which made it the most expensive night of our trip. There was NO way this was worth any more than half that amount. This place is a lovely old mansion in a pretty setting, but is counting on its relationship with Muirfield Golf Course to keep going. It is WAY overdue an overhaul both in quality of accommodation, staff training and food options. Their breakfast was one of the poorest of our trip.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience with us at Greywalls. I am of course saddened that we were not able to meet your standards during your visit and apologise for several of the points you have outlined within your review. I am thankful for the feedback provided in order we can assess what we need to work on so we maintain the high standards we set ourselves and strive for new heights. With regard to the water draining whilst bathing, I hope you would agree that I did better this upon making me aware, but a plumber was required to have the issue fully resolved. I was able to have this repaired the morning after your departure, but I am just sorry you were not able to benefit from this considering it was only the one evening you were spending with us. Regarding the shower, I would have happily assisted with this operation had we have known, and the taps in the sink are designed to offer a lighter flow in order to prevent water wastage. Regardless of the shortcomings you were to encounter during your visit, I do hope you would one day considering returning, and if so, I would be delighted to assist with your reservation personally. Kind Regards, David Robertson, General Manager.

I can’t really disagree with the other lower ratings you’ll read here. This was a place I’d wanted to visit for some time and I came away with the overall feeling of it being a rather disappointing experience. I don’t understand how this could be classed 5 star. The room (which we upgraded from standard) was drab, uninspiring, dated and dull with peeling paint and poor heating and there were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room either The restaurant food was average and certainly no where near worth the £75 a head price tag when you can dine at the Michelin starred Peat Inn for £95 a head. Our wine glasses were empty for some time before the waiter topped them up and the table service generally was rather poor. And the pianist in the lounge bar was playing so loud after dinner, that we couldn’t hear each other speak.so it was more a concert than background music. On the plus side, the bed was comfy, the breakfast was very enjoyable (much more so than dinner) but we had to ask the protocol for breakfast as no one explained juices and cereals were in the other room etc…the bar area was nice and the manager works hard to serve the bar, the restaurant and the lounge bar during a busy lunch service. Staff numbers and staff training (or lack off) are one of the biggest issues here I feel and although I’m sure Covid has a lot to answer for, there are quick wins to be had here. But we won’t be back to see them. If I’m goi g to spend circa £500 for one night DB&B (& drinks) I’d prefer to go for a safer bet.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience at Greywalls Hotel and Chez. Please let me start by sending my sincere apologies for the shortcomings you have experienced during your stay and for anything that has not been to your standard. With what you have outlined, this falls far short of the standards that we strive for. It is deeply saddening that you have mentioned about not returning as we appreciate and welcome all returning guests. Should you ever change your mind, we hope to provide a better experience. We've always enjoyed a Sunday lunch at Greywalls but on Sunday 23rd June we had such a new experience of the place. There was a significant change in the staff and experience of the staff. A real lack of the usual finesse and charm. There were servers dressed in suits instead of smart service attire, a real change in atmosphere and service. Although all polite and trying to do the right thing, the welcome, table service and plate service seemed clumsy and unpolished. We were asked by three different members of staff for our drinks order which had been taken by the first member of staff already. There was water spilt on the table by the server when issuing water, but we had to ask to have something to mop it up with so the water did not spill onto the guest each time they drank from the wet glass. There was the poor quality "food auction" by the server when the food arrived to the table of the four of us in the otherwise empty dining room. "Who's having this, who's having that." Not what we ever had before at Greywalls.
We would have welcomed a pre-lunch drink but on arrival we were whisked into the dining room. There was no offer of bread or other things that would've added to our lunch and also added to the income for Greywalls. There were also language barriers and misunderstandings when placing the orders. In short, it was a team of servers who really need some training and help with how to interact, manage and create an experience for customers. A complete lack of any finesse.
We had coffee outside in the garden afterwards, beautiful gardens, lovely setting as ever but again, things were missed by the polite girl who served us. There wasn't enough milk, no biscuit or shortbread and again, a lack of training, ability to notice things that need attention and finesse.
I had a main portion of mussels for my lunch, very fresh and pleasant but nothing special at all, could've and would've been much tastier with a sauce of something you'd want to dip your bread in! Sunday Roast was pretty average too and really lacked in flavour or anything memorable.
I wonder if there are staffing issues as we saw no management anywhere. We met friends who were attending for after-noon tea, they expressed the same experience and that they felt the service was simply not there and it all lacked the usual charm and elegance it once had. Hopefully just a bad day or have things changed so significantly? Maybe worth one more try and then sadly, not worth the drive.

Dear BabyMax, Thank you for spending time to leave us some valued feedback from your experience on your Sunday lunch visit. It clearly is a very poor read that we have not met your expectations on this visit. All the service points which you have mentioned will, of course, be used as training tools for the team but I can assure you we have high standards that we set ourselves in our Dining Room. I do hope you do return to Greywalls so we can turn your negative feeling toward us, around. Many thanks for your review, Simon Round General Manager

1-star review for the absolute disappointment that was our stay here. This hotel although on the outside looks absolutely stunning has so many issues on the inside both in the extremely outdated decor and the absolute incompetence of who we could only assume was "management" due to the suits. The room we stayed in was not only outdated but numerous items were either broken or not included despite it being advertised on the website. 1. Chair was broken and dusty 2. Windows didn't latch properly 3. No tea or coffee making facilities despite being advertised 4.Constant noise throughout the night 5. Chips and cracks in the paint work of the room 6. Carpets looked like should have been replaced a decade ago For the amount of money, we spent and for what is supposedly a "5 star" hotel it was an absolutely appalling standard. Not to mention the service from the staff in the restaurant who spent more time either standing around staring or looking at their phones, we had to constantly ask for our water and wine to be topped up because apparently even with a nearly empty restaurant and three staff members this was too difficult for them, our food not only took ages to come out but once we'd finished our meal, our plates sat empty on our table for a good 15minutes after we'd finished because again the staff obviously had better things to do. When we came down for breakfast the following morning it was like watching children in suits, running around not knowing what to do, we found it embarrassing to see. We seated ourselves as we couldn't find anyone, we then waited 10minutes for someone to take our order, then waited another 15minutes for our tea and coffee to arrive and when we finally got our food it was borderline cold as we could only assume it had been sitting and waiting for someone to get and bring to the table.
The only highlights were the gardens and the food (when it finally arrived to the table). The gardens were absolutely stunning and immaculately kept (the only area of this hotel that is 5 star).
Overall save your money and stay somewhere else because this is definitely not a 5 star hotel, this would have to be not only the worst hotel my husband and I have stayed at but also the most poorly managed.

Just some comments on the accommodation and meals , I’ll keep it short as no one wants to read a long ramble.
Spent one night to celebrate a family members special birthday. The staff were excellent.warm, friendly and attentive. The evening meal was wonderful, and the pianist playing in the lounge where we had our pre dinner drinks just set the scene.
Now the not-so positive, given the price point and exception from a ‘ luxurious and elegant country hotel’.
We booked into Colonel's House, I was aware that the house was a short distance from the main hotel. What I was not aware of is that it is outside the hotel grounds, across the road. Not a huge issue had it been summer but on a dark , cold winters night it was not such a pleasant stroll. The lighting leading to the hotel is very limited and the drive is rough stone ,so watch if you’re wearing heels,
The Colonel’s house itself lacked love and the standard expected was just not there. Although a few area were well curated the rest was a mismatch of furniture, accessories and bits and pieces. Some of which were fit for the bin. The lighting is poor, some lamps with no sockets to plug them into.
Generally clean, but in need of a deep clean, there was cobwebs, dust and rusty fixtures and fittings. The bathrooms and en-suites were functional, but far from luxury.
The house is badly in need of refurbishment by an interior designer.
Finally the breakfasts. The cooked choice was limited and my expectation would have been that breakfast would be cooked to order. The bacon, sausages were not freshly cooked.

Dear Lorrainem470, thank you very much for taking the time to share feedback following your recent stay with us at Greywalls Hotel, in The Colonels house. I am delighted that you enjoyed the great food and service offered by the team and the atmosphere provided in the main house during your your stay with us. I appreciate your thoughts on the perceived location of the colonels house relative to the main hotel. This is a valid point that I will address by more clear communication via our website, and at the point of reservation. You are absolutely right in highlighting that in winter in particular this is of particular note. Thank you for this and be assured I will act upon your feedback with urgent effect. I am also grateful of your thoughts and comments regarding the furnishing and finish of the Colonels house. Your suggestion to appoint an interior designer is something very much in mind already. As recently as November myself, the owners and Directors were joined in scoping out proposed improvements to this lovely property, reflecting a number of your thoughts directly. I look forward to leading improvements in this regard in the coming months ahead. I will be sure to inspect the house again as part of my weekly inspections and will ensure that any areas lacking in terms of deep cleaning are addressed. We do pride ourselves on an excellent breakfast and in accepting your feedback be sure that this is noted and will be acted upon directly with the kitchen team. The breakfast should leave a positive last impression of any guests stay and I share your sense of disappointment. I do hope that in spite of some shortcomings, that you would consider a return visit to Greywalls Hotel in the future with my firmest personal assurance that your feedback is acknowledged, and will be proactively utilized to contribute to the continued drive to continually improve our standards and reputation. Kind Regards Ian Gray

We were looking forward to our 2 night stay at Greywall only to be disappointed. On the drive up the hotel the driveway is full of pot hotholes and parked cars as there is no designated carpark. When we arrived we had to go looking for a member of staff to check us in as there is no reception desk. Our room was on the ground floor with views of the golf course which was fine. The heating in the room didn’t work and staff obviously knew this as there was a portable heater behind the sofa. The room itself was dark and dated. The cupboard shelves were dusty, hadn’t been wiped in a long while. The bathroom was okay apart from the hot water tap in the sink, it only provided a trickle of lukewarm water. On the plus side the bed was comfy.
We ate in the restaurant on the first night and again we were disappointed by the food. We have eaten in many michelin star restaurants, but this has to be one of the worst. £75 per head for average food?? One the second night we went out and ate in a local Italian restaurant (The Main Course) and had a much better experience - If you go out at night there are no lights along the driveway, you have to find your way to your car in the dark - could be a bit of a health and safety issue with all the potholes……. The small bar area is cosy and pleasant enough. The breakfast each morning was okay.
There seems to be a lack of staff as the same members were serving dinner then breakfast along with tending to the bar area.
We will not be back nor would we recommend this hotel or restaurant.

The dining was good. On a three night stay on the first night at 4AM a fellow guest tried multiple time s to break into my room,it was very frightening andI was fearful for my safety. He eventually left me alone. I barricade door the door and next morning and several times later asked staff for an apology and was told they were aware of the individual, he was with a group and they had spoken to the travel agent!! He remained in the house and i remained very concerned! I believe the response was completely inadequate and keeping the offender in house when he was obviously of disturbed mind for reasons unclear was inappropriate. i would not recommend staying at this venue if you value your personal safety

Dear Mr. Collins, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with the Trip Advisor community, and I also thank you for pointing out to the same community that we take care of those guests we feel are vulnerable and clearly confused with the surroundings of a hotel they were visiting for the first time, rather than have them expelled like you would have wished. I agree with your account and the frightening nature of it and again I apologise for this event, but to suggest we were unconcerned when an investigation was already taking place before we even had your account, then several measures being taken once I personally spoke with the guest in question, lead guest of the group and travel agent. After these discussions, it was clear the gentleman was mistakenly trying to access what he thought to be his room. I hope you would agree that I gave several personal apologies on the numerous times we spoke but asking me to gain a written apology from the gentleman after I passed on his sincere apology for the episode as a whole, I felt was unnecessary. We take guest safety extremely seriously and had there been a concern with a repeat, further actions would have been taken. To my knowledge, there was no repeat during the rest of your stay nor for the days to follow whilst the guest remained for the duration of his stay. Kind Regards, David Robertson, General Manager.
