Nicest camp that we stayed at in Botswana and all of our camps were first class. The setting is gorgeous with a Polynesian style with lots of woodwork in the main area. This camp combines the ability to ground safari and also water safari in Mokoro boats. It is worth doing the Mokoro. The food is first rate - and...

Dear Jeff B, Thank you for your wonderful review, we are delighted to see how much you enjoyed your stay with us that even after a year you are easily able to recall your fond memories. We do hope you will return soon. Jao is the epitome of luxury in the most remote, scenically splendid setting, frequently visited by wildlife;...

We went to Jao to relax in the bush. The big five etc.. are not our prime objective. Lovely boat drive with colorful birds. Hyenas calling at night. It is a great bush experience. Obviously on holidays, I do not carry a note book to write all tiny details of what is wrong. My God, I want to relax. The...

Thank you VivaKermit1, for the beautiful review, we are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed the adventure of tracking down the, sometimes, illusive game as well as the picturesque sundowners in the bush. We certainly hope you were given the private dining experience you wanted. Providing the ultimate Delta water experience in the heart of the Okavango, luxurious Jao...

I have been to the best safari camps throughout Africa including the luxurious Londolozzi Granite and this camp is right up there. Great staff, great guides and very nice facilities. The complaints about not seeing large game in huge quantities is not surprising. The draw here is the Okavango river delta and the uniqueness of the water and its inhabitants....

Thank you johnbl1, for the wonderful review, we are delighted to hear what successful fishing expeditions you and MT had. Fishing is good year-round except January and February when fishing is barred by law – when we are unable to boat, we can still offer fishing from the riverbank. In winter we often catch very large tigerfish, and bream fishing...

Having grown up in Zimbabwe, and spent many years in South Africa, I have spent most of my life swanning around game reserves all over Southern Africa. But I had never been to the Okavango Delta before, fighting off many friends an family over the years who have insisted we go. So we bit the bullet and went (just back...

Jao was a wonderful surprise. This was our third trip to Botswana because we love it so much. We had never been to a camp so much in the flood plain before. It offered unique opportunities to see wildlife we had never seen previously. Our day at the island was one of the best ever spent in this lovely country....

Dear Megan W, Wow – what wonderful feedback! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences on your recent trip to Jao. We agree that it is a great camp to show one the diversity and beauty of the Okavango Delta, situated on the floodplains as it is but with access to both the waterways and woodlands on...

Our first taste of safari and a very pleasant introduction - Jao is a very short transfer from the airstrip - accommodation is good with large well equipped rooms - there's no wifi, no tv's and no phone signal - all of which was okay for us and it was entirely in keeping with the experience to not have these...

Dear Flobmac, Thank you for your beautiful review, we are glad to hear you enjoyed the start to your safari adventure with us. You are correct that there are planned refurbishments scheduled for 2016 however, as to the exact details we cannot at this point say. Rest assured any and all revamps will be made with little impact on the...

I can't say enough positive stuff about this lodge, it dropped my jaw from the moment we arrived. The games drives or boat rides are spectacular, the lodge is a place you never want to leave, the staff is incredibly friendly. This is a must visit spot in the Delta, treat yourself to the best.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A sophisticated and hidden Okavango Delta retreat.Located on a large island in the heart of the Okavango, Jao Camp’s individually handcrafted and luxurious tents look out onto the essence of the Delta – swathes of water, swaying reeds, leaping lechwe and dancing cranes. The main area is an elaborate two-storey wooden structure with lounge and dining area, two plunge pools, a library, curio shop and boma for dining under the stars, complemented by an excellent wine cellar. An award-winning spa and gym epitomise luxury in the most remote, scenically splendid setting.HighlightsJao’s position – amongst waterways and lagoons, yet close to dry Kalahari woodland – means you can enjoy both land and water experiences, depending on the time of year and the level of the waters that move ceaselessly through the area. Here, spectacular herds of red lechwe are followed by lion and leopard, while other game includes tsessebe, giraffe, elephant, hippo and crocodile, occasional sitatunga and regular spotted-necked otter. Experiences: Mokoro • Boating (seasonal) • Seasonal catch-and-release fishing • Day and night game drives • Seasonal hide for sleep-outs or game viewing ... more   less
