We stayed at Butiama Beach hotel in November for the Whale shark watching at the end of November. Upon check in we were asked for our food allergies or preferences and given a tour of the resort by Maura. The rooms are spacious and well thought out - the lounge area in the front with a hammock, table and chairs... More

The Pros: amazing grounds; lovely bar area; fantastic pool; great excursions; fabulous food; friendly staff; close attention to aesthetic details. The Cons: rooms were extremely hot, with insufficient fans; no wifi except at reception area; service was often slow; not a great swimming beach. We had a lovely stay at Butiama, but might bring some extra fans with us next... More

My wife and I spent our last night on Mafia Island at Butiama beach resort. We stayed in a luxurious bungalow that was both beautiful and clean. The staff closed the doors sprayed the room for mosquitoes and closed the mosquito nets around the bed while we were enjoying out spectacular four course included dinner. The highlight of our trip... Moez, Maura & team really go out of their way to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable. Great setting, situated right on the beach in thatched bungalows under palms. Lovely big pool for children and adults alike. Great excursions, especially snorkel and picnic tours to remote islands. Whale shark trips are very special.

Good but we changed after 2 days. On the good side the service is great but does not smile to much. The manager Maura is very nice and helpful. The swimming pool is large and clean. The food is really good and the hotel well maintained. We rated 3 because of 2 severe cons. First the beach is located a... More

The is a lovely, casual, relaxed, barefoot hotel right on the beach. We loved it. There are lovely thatched cottages, set amongst well tended pretty gardens and palms and there is a super pool too. The food is great and the plentiful staff are very friendly and helpful. We found it to be the perfect location to see whale sharks... More

Butiama is a very special resort, every need is catered for perfectly and the staff were so friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The rooms were absolutely beautiful and extremely comfortable, the best bed ever on holiday! Things that we loved: - The pool and grounds are well maintained, the gardens gorgeous - The food is fantastic--they easily accommodated a dairy and gluten free diet with no problem. The seafood was just as we expected it--amazing! And incredible variety: crab, lobster, lamb, prawns, calamari--different for every meal - The rooms have some well thought out details like... More

Originally, i planned to go to Zanzibar, but on a hot tip from a fellow traveler and a recco from a friend's friend, I canceled last minute in favor of hoping to swim with Whale Sharks in Mafia Island. Butiama Beach came highly recommended, so we contacted Maura, the owner, the night before we were flying and luckily, she had... More
