Rhino lodge is a nice little place and basically the only affordable option which is close to the crater. You can also stay in Karatu outside NCA, but if you want to visit the crater, I suggest you start teh descend very early (opens at 6 am) and enjoy the first hours of peace (and excellent light for pics) before...

As part of our 4 day safari we stayed here one night prior to doing the Ngorongoro Crater. It is a little over an hour to get to the bottom of the crater from the lodge. The rooms are a bit rustic, but comfortable. Dinner was very good and the service was excellent. The wi-fi is only available in the...

We were happy to have you at Rhino Lodge and that overall you appreciated our property. We are sorry the wi-fi was not up to your expectations. During the rainy season, the connexion can be perturbed by heavy storms in the area of the Airtel pole... it might not rain at the time at the lodge itself but a storm...

We stayed here during a safari organized by Tabia Safaris. They suggested us this place because we didn't want to spend much money in the accommodation but we still wanted safe and comfortable places. They gave us some more luxurious options in Ngorongoro, but their prices were too high for us, so we guessed Rhino would fit for us. It...

We stayed here for 1 night and were the only resident out of 24 rooms! The service was excellent and we were made very comfortable by the host while checking in and also during dinner that customarily, you have with your tour guide which was very thoughtful. The chef was very accommodating for our vegetarian taste and made sure we...

Rhino Lodge was one of my favourite stops that I wished I'd had more time to enjoy. Our group was doing a self driving safari tour and travel from Mwanza to Dar es Salaam by SUV, so there was a bit of a learning curve during the planning process as most groups travel with safari companies. We had arrived at...

I stayed here for a night enroute to Ndutu while leading a safari for Incredible Africa Safaris. My first visit here and hopefully not my last. This is pure value for money (but you need to book months in advance) when you compare the steep rates of properties on the crater rim. Though one is not on the rim, you...

A nice place to stop in Ngorongoro and the atmosphere is also refreshing, with a blend of guests and the cool air from the crater. Food was o.k. and the rooms clean and tidy. A good stop after a long day of driving.

The Rhino Lodge was just fine, especially comparing the price with the other options. The food and service were very good. The room we had was spacious but worn. Sadly, no view of the crater floor but it was foggy in the morning so I am glad we did not splurge.

It is the end of the day and the sun is settling after a half day in the Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania. The buffaloes come to this lodge as if it was their home. They sleep chewing like cows near your hotel balcony. Other animals too come to the hotel grassy grounds to feed the last bit of the day....

Wifi in lounge and restaurant area, but not rooms. Back patios in rooms and nature views from cafeteria area which was beautiful, relaxing, and if you're lucky a chance to see wildlife! Food is buffet style. And for those on safari with guides the policy is that you eat your dinner meal with your guide- which we loved! Rooms were...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Rhino Lodge is ideally located on the edge of the Ngorongoro crater rim. The Lodge was originally the home of Ngorongoro’s first conservator, and its developers have maintained the house’s original rustic, low-impact style and natural setting. Rhino Lodge offers a perfect base from which to explore the Ngorongoro crater and its surroundings. Game drives into the crater, and, for the more adventurous, walking safaris in the forest reserve and visits to nearby Maasai villages, can all be arranged from the lodge. And, on return after a long day, 24 comfortable en suite rooms with forest views, a cozy living space, friendly local staff and generous African-inspired meals offer guests a warm welcome home. ... more   less
