We stayed at the Casa Marina Reef resort for 4 nights for Easter. I had previously stayed at this resort 4 years ago prior to the extensive renovations that occurred approximately 1 year ago. The lobby and buffet have been beautifully renovated and the new adult only section with swim up rooms looked good (from a distance at least - since I had a child with me I was unable to book in that section). We booked a deluxe ocean view room. I was disappointed in the size of the room which was quite small. The previous room I stayed in was twice the size. Also, the 2 beds seemed smaller than a double which was not a great situation with 2 adults in one bed. The bathroom was nicely renovated and much improved from the bathroom on our previous trip. There was always lots of hot water and good water pressure. When we checked in we were give 3 instruction and information sheets in Spanish only. Although I speak some Spanish I am not fluent and immediately went to the lobby to request a copy of everything in English. I was surprised to discover they didn't have an English version. At no point was I told that if you wanted your room cleaned you had to call to make a request (pandemic rule apparently). When I discovered that the room had not been cleaned the next day I called and asked why it hadn't been cleaned and they said they would send someone. I was not informed at that point either of the rule. Obviously if I had been aware I would have been calling in the morning. I called again the next night and it was only then that I was told. It was a very frustrating experience. The lamp in the room did not work and when we couldn't get the TV to turn on we discovered that the remote control had no batteries. The only restaurants that were open were the buffet and the Italian a la carte (some days). It was disappointing that the snack bar was not open. The gym and spa were also not open. The food in the buffet was not bad but there was not a lot of selection. At least half of the buffet stations did not have food. I suspect that the pandemic protocols were responsible for the lack of amenities and restricted food options but since I couldn't read the information sheets I'm not entirely sure. The Corona Virus protocols that I could see around the resort were very good and were adhered to quite stringently. As with the last time I was there the little pools perched on the coral cliffs with amazing views of the ocean were the highlight of our stay.

There is something definitely wrong with the people organizing and managing the evening shows. The sound level is .. unreal...!! Shows start around 8:30 pm and go to midnight. they actually seem decent. However; I live in a condo at Playa Alicia, and I regularly register over 90DBs when they have shows, even though I have all my double glazed windows closed. Speaking to them about it does not seem to help... I've contacted a lawyer to see if any legal action can be taken. Casa Marina is truly a BAD neighbor.

I have stayed in other hotels during pandemic times, I know things are not the same but this was the worst experience ever. We had to wait for 3 hours so they can give us the room (Ocean View 2167 - December 31st). Room did not have basic items like a phone, a blower, a coffee maker. Tv remote was broken and tv buttons did not work. When we get there air conditioning was not working but fortunately it got fixed later. RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE WAS THE WORST PART, there’s a single restaurant opened (Batey) they have the most insane measures for ‘pandemic’, first, there’s a line to get into the restaurant all the time, aftersomeone gives your seat, you have to wait until someone bring you the dishes so that you can go to the other line (a big one) to get into the buffet (about 15 mins in line everytime to get all meals breakfast, lunch dinner). When you finally get there there are only 4-5 stations (no food variety), no dessert, no ice cream, no Pizza, no fried chicken, no cereal in the morning. Also snacks were served in same restaurant (same process)

So yes I travelled during the pandemic with my daughter. 21st of December to the 28th of December. To start off. Planes are full capacity. Wear mask at all times. On the resort in places where there could be crowds, you have to wear a mask. All staff members have their masks at all time. When you arrive they spray your luggages. The only restaurant is the buffet. Not much to choose from but we are travelling during a pandemic. The staff will bring your plate and then you may go get your food. Not much choices but the food was great. Social distancing is respected at all times and masks are obligated. The room and views where perfect. Drinks where also very good. My favourite is the bananamama. Not many people in the resort but I didn’t mind. The beach is small and has really big waves. But next to the resort on the left side there is a bigger beach and another one with scenic views just a 20 minute walk away. This was a perfect places and I will definitely go back when this pandemic is over.

I went to this beautiful resort over 5 times. I love it. Now, after the covid closure when 7 of us arrived to the resort at 1pm - after starting the day at 5am in Canada - the reception made us wait and then she told us we still have to wait over 2-3 hours for the rooms to be ready... The total number of tourists in the hotel were 47 at that time... it was outrageous ... Anyhow; paying the usual price and getting close to zero services- with an authoritarian attitude... hmm... not pleasant... When i asked why they don't turn on the music at the pool side, the response was: for these few people?... even they locked the gym... (i never met more than one person on the gym, and even if they would restrict the use, I would understand but to totally close it... hmmm). All but one restaurants and bars were closed down with extremely (!) limited choices... and one last example of the wrong approach: guests were obligated to wait at the restaurant's entrance for being seated... - in the only one room of the main restaurant's 7 rooms... the other 6 were closed down - due to covid. in this way everyone was forced to sit close to each other... does it make sense? and can you relax and re charge in an environment like this? they have a long way to go... Hopefully at one point the price will match up to the services they suppose to provide... It was an extremely unpleasant experience with daily inconveniences (no room cleaning - due to covid you must ask it - and they don't tell it to you in advance...) Well, good luck!
