My LONG-detailed review on Iberostar Selection Bavaro Suites.
If you don’t have time to read it, it is a lovely resort and a great choice. Just go, you’ll love it.
If you have time and like lots of details, read on.
I vacationed with a friend in September 2023 at Iberostar Selection Bavaro Suites for 5 nights and 6 days. This was approximately my 20th trip to the Caribbean but my first time to Dominican Republic.
The resort is a family friendly resort situated on a beautiful strip of white sand beach.
When our shuttle arrived at the resort, it took us on a long sprawling drive through the property along the golf course.
There are 5 resorts within this resort complex. The Grand is the adult only luxury property and gives you access to all the other resorts in this complex. The Punta Cana and Dominicana give you access to one another; they are similar in look and size. Currently the Punta Cana is being refurbished but they did a great job of camouflaging the buildings with tarps draped around it that look like the side of the building and the balconies. From far away, you wouldn’t realize it was a tarp! The Coral Level is a resort within the Bavaro Suites and gives access to the Dominicana and Punta Cana. This gives you more choices or beach, pool, bars, etc. However, we were happy with staying at the Bavaro ide and didn’t use the other two resorts. There are golf carts if you want to take them around the property instead of walking.
We arrived at the lobby of Bavaro Suites and were immediately taken to the front desk where we were given a refreshing fruit juice welcome drink. The bell hop set our bags aside and the front desk staff checked us in. We arrived approximately 2 hours prior to check in time of 3:00, so we were shown a map of the property and told what restaurants were open for lunch at that time. We were hungry from a long travel day. We ate at the buffet by the pool, walked the property to acclimate ourselves and then grabbed a couple cocktails from the lobby bar while we waited for our room. A bell hop took us and our luggage to our room when it was ready at 3:30.
The real feel temperature was between 102 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit each day of our stay. We didn’t have one drop of rain the entire stay. It was hot and humid. I think it was the hottest I’ve felt in any Caribbean destination I’ve visited. After we left, I heard from friends we met there that were still there, that heavy rains finally came, and the temperatures dropped a bit.
We were assigned building 22 in a first-floor room. This building was a good location to all amenities. Close to the beach, pools, etc. The resort has villas spread out with 8 rooms in each, 4 on 1st floor and 4 on 2nd floor. The rooms are large. Either two double beds or one king. The bathroom is somewhat spacious with a large walk-in shower and large vanity. There is also a sitting area in the room with two sofas, a mini fridge stocked daily and a large flat screen TV on the wall with a desk. There was a large closet with plenty of hangers, shelves and a safe. The rooms are a little dated, however not a problem, ours was very clean and the housekeeping did a fabulous job cleaning daily and leaving flowers and towel art.
We ate at the dinner buffet our first night because we were tired and didn’t feel like trying for a reservation or waiting to eat. The buffets have a large variety of food, and they change it up daily so you can try different foods without getting bored with them. Everything from tacos, soups, salads, pizzas, chicken and fish. The fish was amazing at lunch. It was just a simple white fish floured a little and baked, but it was delicious and lite tasting. Breakfast had omelets made to order if you’d like. There was always fresh fruit, juices, pastries, etc. One night we had a 9:00 dinner reservation so we went to the buffet when it opened for a quick appetizer to hold us over. I am not a sushi eater, but if you are, there was a huge variety of fresh sushi for dinner.
Lunch is also provided outside of the buffet at a small stand where they made hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled chicken. There were French fries, onion rings, rice and salads, most days they prepare large pans of paella there as well.
Our first full day after breakfast we visited the concierge in the lobby to help us with dinner reservations. There is an Iberostar app that enables you to make the reservations, but it really wasn’t working well because after booking one it wouldn’t allow me to book any additional reservations. When we visited the concierge, we were able to get reservations for the additional 4 nights of our stay. Keep in mind, it may not be the exact time you’d like to eat. You will need to be flexible. We were happy to take late reservations because we wanted to stay on the beach and the pool (closed at 7) then shower and get ready. We were fine to eat later but it could be tough if a family brings small children. We ate at the steakhouse, Italian, Mexican and hibachi. They were all very delicious and the food came our quickly. Our favorite was probably the steakhouse. The New York Strip steak was done perfectly and was a nice cut of meat. I would have ordered a larger size if I knew it was going to be so delicious. There are several first courses to choose from on each menu and about 4 desserts on each. We are wine drinkers and were pleasantly surprised by how good the dry house wines were for an all-inclusive resort.
There is a coffee bar on site which has different beverages, pastries and small sandwiches if you want a quick bite between meals. The lobby bar had several bar stools and tables to relax at and they have popcorn if you want a lite snack there. There are fun chair swings that we sat at every late afternoon when we were done with the sun and water and wanted to swing with a glass of wine. It is surrounded by water and lush foliage. Look for the fish and turtles that swim around in there.
There are some iguanas and geckos running around. They are harmless. The birds though, watch out for the large white birds near any buffets. Since the buffets are open air, the birds tend to fly in and one grabbed a bite of my friend’s half eaten omelet. They are harmless but can be annoying when you’re eating. But no big deal. They were pretty to see.
Other than the foam party, we didn’t really take advantage of the activities during the day, but there were plenty to do if you choose. There are tons of beach chairs and palapas on the beach. We never had to search for one.
The main pool with the swim-up bar had many chairs as well. They were a little scarcer than the beach, but we still were able to find two together in some shade. We enjoyed the smaller pool more so than the main. It had its own bar, plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. It was quieter over there. It was so hot that week, we were in the water almost the entire time we were outside. The pool water was very warm, especially in the main pool in the swim-up bar side of the bridge where it was shallower. If you go over on the other side of the bridge where it is deeper, the water was a little more refreshing.
There is gift shop and jewelry shop near the lobby. Also, this is where you find the excursion desks.
There is a small “shopping street” on property between the Bavaro Suites and the Dominicana resort. It is a cute strip of stores painted pretty vivid colors. It is mostly the same items in each shop and there was little pressure from one or two people to buy things, but you can simply say a firm “no thank you” and you will be fine. It was nice because it felt somewhat like you were in a little town not a resort.
There are vendors that walk the beach selling souvenirs as well. Again, they will want to talk to you and I’m a talker, so I had no problem chatting, sometimes looking at their items. I purchased a pretty wood carving of an iguana and he carved “Punta Cana” into for me. Again, if you’re not interested, simply don’t make eye contact and a firm “no thank you” should work.
On the side of the resort with the Dominicana and the Punta Cana, there is a shopping complex. This is where the sports bar, Star Rock American Restaurant, the disco and the casino are located. We poked our head into each of those but didn’t use any of them. There is a cigar shop in this complex also. Another gift shop is here but it was closed when we walked over. This shopping plaza has potential, but it was completely empty of guests and many things were closed when we walked over mid-day. There is a bar that was open and small tables in the plaza to sit at. I assume it gets lively at night with the disco, sports bar, etc.
We also poked our heads into the spa and the fitness center. The spa looked lovely, and they were running specials for massages but we didn’t take part in any of this so I can’t review them.
I get bug bites like crazy anywhere I go, and this was no different. I can honestly say I didn’t see them, or feel them when they bit me but, in the evenings, I’d notice several every day. So, if you get bit up, you may want to coat yourself in bug spray anytime you are not in the water.
The first several days, there was no seaweed whatsoever. The next couple days, a little seaweed was floating in, but it was nothing bad at all. There were several tropical storms in the Atlantic and Caribbean at the time, so I assume it was from that. Also, if you are looking for calm still water, it was kind of rough with larger waves. Again, not sure if that was from the storms at sea, or if this area typically has larger waves. Personally, I like the waves better than a still “lake-like” ocean.
Most of the staff speak in both English and Spanish. I only know a few key words in Spanish, but I think they appreciated when we tried to say some in Spanish. The language barrier might be difficult for some, but you are in a Spanish speaking country, so you need to realize that going there. Most guests seemed to speak the language or at least a language close to Spanish.
Iberostar resorts are eco-friendly and do not have any single use plastic waters bottles. They have glass bottles in your room, and filtered water filling stations situated around the property. We had zero issues with the water and food. We ate fruit, drank juices, iced drinks, etc. We used the filtered bottled water for brushing our teeth, not tap water.
Our room keys were on our wristbands which was convenient to have; you didn’t have to worry about forgetting your key.
Pool towels are given to you at a towel hut at the main pool. We swapped them out daily for fresh towels with no problems.
All the staff we met were very friendly, and always appreciated any tips we gave them. Also, if we didn’t tip at a given time, the service was just as good.
A few names I can remember that stood out to us were Angelino at the quieter pool bar. He made great mixed drinks and went out of his way to go get us a white wine we liked that wasn’t at his bar. He made sure every late afternoon, he had it there for us. Jairon was the concierge that helped with our dinner reservations. Ramon in the lobby bar was great also. He ran to another bar to get us wine as well. I wish I could remember the name of the bartender at the beach bar. He made kick butt drinks and was nice and friendly. He was there almost every day, so I think it’s probably his usual spot. At breakfast each day we had the same servers, Mario and Teresa. They were so kind. Every morning Mario remembered our drink order of two aqua and two mimosas.
Our last full day, a local walking with a very large iguana came up to us on the beach and was a bit too aggressive wanting us to hold and take photos with his iguana, then asked for money after we took the photo. Be stern if you do not want him near you with it. I only saw him one day out of the 6 days, but just to warn you.
Another thing to note, Iberostar does have a Travel Club and does try to sell you a membership. I wasn’t pressured here about a presentation, but in the past, I was elsewhere, and I find a very strong NO, does the job. Unless you are interested, don’t waste precious vacation time listening to them.
The airport is open-air, so it is hot and there are no restrooms easily available when you deplane. From landing until we were in our shuttle, it was approximately 1 ½ hours. So be prepared for that, especially if you have young children that might get tired of waiting. We did arrive on a Friday later morning so maybe it was busier but be prepared.
The shuttle took about 25 minutes to get to the resort.
Would I return to this resort? It was nice and if there weren’t so many other places I’d like to see, yes, I would return here.
So, if you’re still with me after this long read, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you have. I’m hopeful I can answer them for you.

Spectacular hotel!!! We had reserved a room with a double bed (it was what was available) and when we arrived at the hotel the manager in the reception area changed our room to one with a king bed and a better location at no cost. The hotel's facilities are super, it has several restaurants, coffee, shops, casino, gym, disco, pharmacy, among other things, you can visit other hotels that are within the property (except the grand adults only). All non-motorized water activities are included.

*An important fact... the hotel is eco-friendly, therefore it does not have plastic water bottles (for example), they give you a large glass bottle and you refill it in the oases every time you need.

I want to highlight the super special treatment that Mario (for SUPER MARIO friends) and Teresa gave us in the buffet area, if you go there, don't hesitate to look for them, they are the best (they even sang to me for my birthday with cake and everything).

We are regulars at Iberostar Bavaro from top-tier Grand (now renamed JOIA) to this Selection resort. All fives for our experience during 2024 Xmas stay. Employees in the resort tried really hard to make all great. Always smiling and greeting guests, beautiful people ready to converse with you on a pass by to their workplaces. Room accommodation was great. When we noticed AC was underperforming in the initial room, another one was provided and even with the pool view. Nice perk! We did not see a single pest or insect throughout our whole 9-day stay. Food was great as always at Iberostar. We even did not feel a need to book restaurant reservations as buffet was abundant with amazing quality dish selection. Christmas arangements were top notch. A lot of effort was put into decorations all over the resort. Many performers every night entertained guests, even live theatrical scenes of actors depicting Mary and Joseph with baby Christ. Many families with kids were all happy. We fully got what we paid for in this resort and even better. Thanks Selection Bavaro, great job done! One suggestion to people who put their complaints here - if any issues just go talk to reception and they do their best to fix it for you. DO NOT listen to some of below rare grumpy reviews of people complaining at non-existent issues. Specifically Bavaro beach area is one of the best in Domincan Republic, seaweed is not overflowing and cleaned daily and thoroughly between 5:00 - 6:00 AM before people come to the beach. And you can swim along the 750 m strech of the Iberostar beach rope to rope, extremely good swimming experience. Iberostar stands out even visually when compared to its neighbouring resorts on left and right.
Highly recommended place to go, not cheap but very rewarding!

Expectations were high, as it was Selection, but the experience was far from over…
As I am a member of the IHG PLATINUM AMBASSADOR program (where I made the reservation) I have some “treats” offered by participating hotels, and Iberostar is on that list. Immediate check in, late check out, welcome drinks, free upgrade, among others are part of the package.
Upon check-in, we had to wait for the room to be released at 3pm. We were offered a room upgrade, for a fee. And promised champagne, and t-shirts in the room (we are waiting until now...🤣🤣🤣).
In other words, the rules of the IHG program were not followed!!!!
The staff's insistence on taking you to watch a “time share” presentation is unpleasant. They even call your room in the morning (8:15 am) to drag you to this presentation.
When we were in the pool, we were approached by another staff member to do a satisfaction survey, in which he asked for my cell phone to enter the survey and he already scored 5 stars in all aspects, and stayed by my side until I finish writing the review, and photograph and send it.
As for cleaning the room, it's also complicated... as it starts after 2pm, and there were days when it was 5:30pm and they still hadn't cleaned it.
Regarding restaurants, the hotel has 6 different ones, of which you can only schedule up to 3 reservations according to the number of days of your stay. As we stayed for 1 week, we had 3 choices, or rather, they weren't choices, it was where they wanted to put us, because the restaurants we wanted were a Japanese one and a
Italian, we were unable to reserve it for any day during our stay.
The quantity and variety of food is great. Drinks too.
The room's minibar is free, but it is not replenished according to your consumption. For example: Coca Cola Zero, I had 1, which I took and they didn't replace it during my stay.
The Iberostar app does not work. You make reservations at restaurants, and they only appear after the /hr date has passed.
The rooms are old and need to be modernized. The upgrade we were offered was to a room close to the beach, and close to the chaos. The hotel is under construction, and at 8am the symphony of drills, hammers and saws cutting tiles began.
Not to mention that to take a shower, you had to dance to the rhythm of the water drops from the shower….one here, two there 💧😅💧💧.
Hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, safe, are at your disposal.
It's worth checking out the Beach Party, a “Cirque du Soleil” type show set up on the beach.
The pools are large, but there are no umbrellas for guests. And some “chairs” cost extra.
The beach is very beautiful, but it also has a “reserved area” for those who pay extra.

Our flight was delayed getting to Punta Cana therefore we arrived in the dark on Saturday night around 10:30. We checked in, got our luggage in a golf cart and were driven over 5 minutes to our room, at the very far end of the resort. Once inside the room, the air conditioning wasn’t working, no hot water, balcony and side windows were left open and the front door wouldn’t lock properly. We called front desk and the concierge talked us through possible solutions. We went to the front desk the next morning to request a room change as we were just too far away from the lobby, beach and pool. My husband and I are in our 70’s with knee operations and we just couldn’t manage the walk nor find the lobby without a map. The day manager Ernesto more or less listened to our issues and offered us a room closer to lobby and restaurant at a price of $700 US to upgrade. We said no way and asked for him to please find us another room at no cost. We were with Air Transat Vacations and he informed us that their customers were put in the rooms at the end of the resort. He finally found us a room and we changed rooms in the afternoon so a total waste of day 1. Once settled, we got our bearings to the amenities. This resort is huge and even though we were closer to the buffet restaurant, the walk to the pool was still a good 10 minutes away and the beach a 15 walk. However Restaurants were good, Japanese excellent, beach beautiful, pool alright but filtration system not working properly, entertainment alright. We found the staff’s lack of English was a real problem and used Google translator often, even at the bar and restaurants. We’ve been to Punta Cana several times but never going back to this chain as the language problem poses a huge barrier.

Mixed experience at Iberostar Selection Bavarian

We have just returned from our stay at Iberostar Selection Bávaro and our experience was a little disappointing in some respects.

✅ The positives:

The theme restaurants were excellent, with very good quality food and service.
The beach and facilities are generally well maintained.

❌ What could improve:

The buffet had little variety, especially in the fruit options.
We noticed that, compared to our visit 10 years ago, the hotel has not changed much and we believe that a modernization would be welcome.
Some people at the bar were rather rude, which surprised us at a hotel in this category.
The towel staff seemed upset when we asked for a change at 4 p.m., even though the service closed only at 6 p.m.
We were assigned a concierge who was attentive at first, but lost interest once we told him we were not buying the subscription to the Iberostar Prestige Club.
Overall, the experience had positive points, but there are areas where service and customer support could improve.

We honeymooned with my husband, thinking it would be a 5-star, luxury hotel. The truth was not so, mostly because of the facilities and quality of everything.

We were offered a breakfast when we arrived to meet the memberships, which we accepted, but when we went it was very tedious. We were passed by 5 different people (our concierge, someone who took our data, the one who made the presentation, the one who told us about numbers and then someone from human resources), apparently they didn’t even know we were going to have breakfast (being that literally was the invitation), so we ended up having breakfast at a buffet in another hotel that was worse than ours. Even the presentation and the conversation about numbers all well, although we had already been listening to them for 2 1/2 hours. We said no and thought that would be it, but then they took us to the HR girl for what we thought would be a satisfaction survey and that ended up being a way to peck at everything we didn't like to keep insisting on buying membership. When my husband told him to please let us go because we already said no and we had been in this for 3 hours, he automatically changed his attitude and became very hostile. It literally ruined our day, don't do it unless you really want to buy.

Our room (which we did an upgrade to almost beach line, supposedly of the best rooms) had thousands of faults; the shower had a leak somewhere so we flooded the bathroom every time we showered, the light on the terrace was bad and did not turn on, the minibar did not cool almost anything so almost everything there was at room temperature and also after a few days started dropping water because yes, the air conditioning sounded a lot and also the power button was bad. The bed was comfortable, and everything was clean.

The food was pretty good, great variety, but nothing out of this world. There were a couple of dishes that were delicious, but most were food without grief or glory.

In the evenings the bathrooms near the Italian restaurant were filled with cockroaches on the floor, which makes me wonder about the sanitation of the facilities.

What made the stay an unforgettable experience was the attention of the restaurant and bar staff, who were very attentive and friendly, even after a couple of days of seeing us followed, they had memorized what we liked (lunchtime drinks or how we had coffee in the morning) and waited with us at the table without having to order it. I highlight the attention of Reyson at the pool bar, who as well as being friendly makes Top-rated drinks in the entire hotel, and of Jorge and Fleury at the restaurants who always served us with a smile and good vibe.

Of course, the person on the tennis courts was very rude and heavy. We tried to play, having previously booked, a day that had rained 30 minutes ago, and he treated us terrible for having gone at that time. Naturally we never tried another day.

Everything was a good experience, but I don't think it's a 5-star hotel at all.

I’m underwhelmed. A few things—-
- if American— be aware that many many of the staff does not speak English. It’s a real problem.
- attitude/helpfulness of the staff is really varied. Some people are very friendly, and some literally roll their eyes at you. My kids have asked for drinks that require blenders and the people working at the bars just refuse, and just hand them a sprite. The staff often seems very annoyed when you ask them for anything.
- housekeeping is very spotty. Things not refilled, room not cleaned. One day the tip we left was taken but the room was not cleaned (like nothing was cleaned— bed not made, garbage not taken out, no clean towels, nothing.) I didn’t like this at all.
- we’ve done ok at breakfast and lunch but dinner has been a true disaster. We can’t get a reservation (at all, at any time, all week) at any of the restaurants requiring reservations. We’ve been going to the other restaurants 10-15 minutes after they open and then waited 90 minutes- 2 hours for a table and then once you sit down another 90 minutes for food. Literally. It’s a mess. The breakfast and lunch buffets work ok but dinner is a fiasco. We’ve just given up at restaurants after waiting for food for an hour and left and gone back to the room and ordered room service. (Room service is not great at all)
The ocean is beautiful and the pools are nice but we wouldn’t come back. The service is not great and the struggles at dinner have been very, very aggravating.

The rooms are very spacious and the food is good. The beach in front of the hotel is very nice, it is not rough and the sea water is very clear. But I wouldn't return to the hotel for the following reasons: 1) the air conditioning in the room is weak; 2) the pillows had an unbearable musty smell; 3) the Italian restaurant with terrible service and bad food; 4) Concierge Simona. She booked the themed restaurants at the times we didn't want by saying there were no earlier times twice (later I was told that what she wanted was a "prior" tip to arrange the times earlier, which makes sense) and offered a coffee in the morning at another hotel in the higher category chain (Coral Level) at 8 am saying that someone would offer us something during breakfast, that I could get a massage and that if we went, she would get points, as she was competing with other co-workers. I didn't confirm our departure at any point with her, especially because it was New Year's and she suggested January 2nd. On 01/01, a person called us in the room, "reminding us of the appointment" and I said that we wanted to rest and that I would talk to Simona by message (yes, she sent several messages insisting on breakfast). At 7:30 in the morning, they called our room, waking us up!! I said we weren't going and that they had woken us up. Despite this, at 8 am, a hotel employee knocked on our room door!!!!!!! I answered in my pajamas saying we weren't going. I imagine that the concierges all have this attitude (perhaps because they are pressured by the Hotel) and I decided to make this assessment with the hope that the hotel (and the concierges) will change their attitude with the next guests!!

From the facilities to every detail, everything is designed to provide a feeling of peace and relaxation. The facilities are impeccable, creating an environment conducive to disconnecting and enjoying quiet moments. The staff's attention was outstanding, showing a genuine commitment to guest comfort. Furthermore, the hotel's location contributes to the serenity of the surroundings. I highly recommend this place to those looking for a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
