We arrived in Ancud by bus and convinced a taxi driver to take us to the cottage we had arranged with Sandra. We headed south and found the turn off no problem. Then came the road in. It took some convincing to get the driver to take his Corolla down the "4X4 Only" road and about half way to the cottage we were on foot. A short walk further and we were met by the house keeper, who showed us to the cottage and advised that she would be at the house if we needed anything. It was apparent that what we needed was a 4X4. We settled in. The Casita is a quaint sea side wood building with a spacious bath with one oddity. One wall of the tub/shower is a picture window. This may be fine for some, but we found that our modesty, or possibly respect for the comfort of others, necessitated a drapery. The bedroom, with king size, has windows on three sides, with drapes I must add, overlooking the water. Fabulous. The kitchen was adequately equipped and certainly suitable for meal preparation. The sitting room has a great view to the water and is comfy but a bit cramped with the dining table, but adequate. So the 4X4. We went up to the house to ask if there was a preferred car rental. Senora called Sandra so she could help us and we were told that we could use here old Suzuki if we liked. That was tremendously convenient. Off we went to find the famed curanto for our lunch. Our stay at the cottage was lovely. Beach walks with the resident dogs. Restful nights. Beautiful views. Excellent meals that we prepared from the fresh eggs and cheese that we bought from local farmers and an incredible shellfish soup from the left over curanto. (Tip: order one to share if you get to Quetalmahue.) The cottage rental is a little pricey at $180US, but if you want serenity and comfort, this is it.

Amazingly cozy with wood fire and nice kitchen we felt at home far away from home!!! We stayed inside for a whole day and just enjoyed ourselves! Best if you look for a quiet pace where you want to find peace!!! Britt, sandra and the kids are just adoreable!!! It is not top end accomodation, though, as it says in lonely planet...

The Tower is the coolest place I've ever stayed, hands down. Right on the beautiful Chiloe coast, it's the perfect place to get out of the city and reconnect with a slower pace of life. The owners are friendly, knowledgeable, and amazing cooks. I left feeling not only relaxed and rejuvenated, but also like I'd been a part of the family for my stay. (There are also a couple of other housing options on the property, which are equally as stunning.) If you're in Ancud and looking for something different, this is it!

Three Alaskan couples spent three days here in January 2013. We loved the place. There are several options for lodging on the property where the owners also live. The new beach house is lovely. The tower was quirky but still a great place to stay. We had the bottom floor apartment. Our friends stayed in the beach house in greater luxury. The hostess Sandra is a superb gourmet cook, and the host Britt is a perceptive guide who guided our group all over the area. Britt is well connected to services throughout Chile and also helped arrange transportation and other accommodation for latter in our trip. The rural setting, forest walk and beach access are all great pluses for guests.

As the previous reviews state the Tower is in a beautiful, peaceful location and run by very friendly people. The food delivered to the unit is excellent and prepared with fresh local ingredients. There are however some drawbacks that have not been mentioned. First of all, the location is remote so transport is essential. We arrived with a rental car but the last few hundred metres down a hill are only accessible by 4X4 so we had to park at the top and transfer our luggage to the owners' vehicle. It means that one has a steep hike uphill whenever one wants to go out; not so good in the rain and it often rains in Chiloe. To be fair the owners would give you a lift up but one does not want to be bothering them, at home, too often. The Tower itself has 2 units. We stayed in the top one which is on 2 levels with the bathroom and bedroom reached by a narrow spiral staircase; difficult to negotiate especially after a couple of Pisco Sours. The ground floor unit is on one level but the bathroom is tiny and the shower access is by squeezing past the toilet. The location, food and service are 5 star but the actual units are what makes me rate it overall as average. Good for fit youngsters but not so good for anyone with mobility problems.
