Chiloé Austral Hotel was a really cool place to stay. It's located in a beautiful spot along the costal walk with great views from the kitchen and lounge room. The Cruz del Sur bus station is very close by (note: there are two bus stations) and all the resturants/bars are only a short walk away. My dorm bed was comfortable and the room was warm. Roberto was really looked after us. He served a really tasty breakfast in the morning and still found time to sit outside for a few glasses of wine at the end of the day despite it being very busy in high season. I'd definitely stay again.

This hostal is still close to the centre, but feels like you are staying in a local area. It has great views from the common room over the ocean. A good kitchen if yoj like to cook for yourself. A decent and varied breskfast was also provided.

Roberto charged us 60$ instead of the legal 32$ for one night in the smallest room and then acted as if he couldn’t understand english or spanish. He moaned around and claimed we had to pay this... We were tired because we had a long day and paid it but then could barely move in this overpriced and supersmall room with shared bathrooms. Now there was no milk and the absolut smallest breakfast in the morning, only one little table for 6 persons so the whole hostal had to hurry through it and leave hungry... But there is more: The bins in the toilets were always overflowing and you had to be in the hostal by 24:00... like in Kindergarten. We felt cheated and had the worst experience in whole Chile...

as people have mentioned before, the owner(or son?! roberto i think) gets very rude as soon as there is the smallest discussion. he can be overly friendly though as long as you go along with him. he made us so angry...i have read other reviews about him and i see what you mean! we had a problem/ question about the booking and he suddenly wasn’t able to speak english anymore and acted as if he didn’t understand my spanish. he was very condescending, calling me señorita. the whole thing ended in us spending almost 60 dollars for a tiny room with shared bath. he ruined ancud for us. added to the personality of this guy(that being the worst part of the stay), the bins in the toillets were always full, it was not very clean, we were pressed together at the breakfast table and were not allowed to stay and talk because we had to make room for the whole family (aunts, kids, ...), there was no milk for breakfast and we got tiny little portions that left us hungry. the room was tiny and cold(i can’t imagine what winter would be like!!) and we felt very observed by the whole family(they hang around the place all the time, you have no privacy), the kitchen had no warm water. i guess it can be cool for backpackers travelling alone because it is so small you will make contacts. there were a lot of very young travellers there. i think this place is a rip off, they clearly just want to make money. go somewhere that serves a nice big breakfast and has nice hosts for the same price! happily this was our only bad experience in chile so far.

We discovered this hostel after deciding against the one that’s just opposite the bus terminal in Ancud. I’m very glad we did as the hospitality and facilities made our stay in Ancud and Chiloé in general one to remember. After we moved on to other sites in Chiloé, I noticed a lingering nostalgia for Chiloé Austral and Ancud in general. My stay at this hostal marked my impression of Ancud, almost making me wish I had spent more time there. Roberto and all his collaborators will take good care of you. Breakfast in the kitchen was cozy and almost magical in the presence of other recent arrivals to Chiloé. The living room is beautiful and was a great place to wait out morning rain.
