The sea view from the Ubudo windows is not the best view in Matsushima, as you are looking past the slightly grimy fishing port to the beautiful pine-covered islands, but the rooms are large and traditionally Japanese without being oppressively so. For example, they have many sizes, shapes and colors of traditional clothing (yukata, samue) to wear inside the hotel, even sizes large enough for my husband and me. We got one of the Japanese style rooms with a pottery bathtub--like sitting in a huge teacup--and if you like Japanese baths it was worth the extra price. The rooftop communal bath is also supposed to be beautiful, but with our in-room bath we didn't need it. The two included meals--dinner and breakfast--were lavish, beautifully presented, and excellent if you like Japanese food. If you don't like (all) Japanese food, you might want to find a hotel that allows you to order off a menu. Bottom line: there are probably better hotels in Matsushima-kaigan, with equally nice communal baths, and less obstructed views of the islands, but for the price Ubudo gave excellent value.

Room Tip: Look on-line at the in-room bathtubs, which are on each room's balcony. Some are really special.

Our travels in Japan (including all other hotels where we stayed) were marked by attention to beauty, cleanliness, and detail. This hotel was the complete opposite: an ugly junk hole and complete rip-off. This place was a cheap, plastic, bachelor's dorm room interpretation of a ryokan/seaside hotel. It advertised all the bells and whistles at about $400 USD per night in the off season (!) and we therefore expected a truly romantic evening in lovely Japanese aesthetic. Instead, we were met with a tourist trap identity crisis of cheap knick-knacks lining every surface (plastic and wire cats? palm trees?), a room with plastic imitation tatami mat floors that smelled like stale smoke and boasted sticky, 90's tv/vcr/clock, and a filmy in-room menu of cigarettes to order. The beds were not Japanese ryokan futons, but just plain old mattresses laid on the floor. Attention to details and aesthetics were extremely poor even by 3-star hotel standards; this place was no elegant gem worth $400 a night. I would have been upset by the quality even paying $200 a night. Our private outdoor deck and soaking tub smelled like a suspicious mixture of bleach and male bodily fluids (although the sperm-like scent may also have been wafting from the huge 20 foot deep mountains of rotting oyster shells in the industrial wasteyard below... hotel is basically situated in the parking lot of an oyster harvesting facility- not a beachfront experience- you must wade through construction equipment, power lines, trash, and processing plants before you get to the ocean). We were physically able to walk to the islands and the train and see sunrise/sunset over the islands from our room, but this hotel was literally on the farthest end of everything and those less willing to haul their luggage a mile or two would have needed a cab. Definitely would not stay here again. Even a clean hostel would be better. Do note that a lot of Matsushima overall was overly developed 50's, cheap and dirty, didn't have the same feel as traveling in the rest of Japan and was very, very overpriced- everything cost twice as much even as in Kyoto!

Hotel is clean and modern, with Balinese decor. Hot spring on top floor a nice touch. Food was of good quality, but could be a little exotic for foreigners. Within walking distance to major attractions. Is conveniently located on loop bus route. The best part however was waking up to the sun rising over Matsushima Bay. A view you would not forget.
