Centrally located for visiting the annual ice festival, this 15 story hotel has a big sign on the side of the top floor. It’s an easy icon to spot from afar.

We walked just over 1km from the JR station down the pedestrian path past several ice sculptures.

The room is cozy and a bit dated yet adequate for our one night stay. The best feature is the breakfast buffet and 180 degree views from the 15th floor. The buffet has the typical Japanese dishes of noodles, fish, vegetables and soup. I especially liked the tempura scallops.

This is your place for walking around the park and ice sculptures.

Had a good overnight stay at the Art Hotel Asahikawa. Unfortunately, had to pay for parking offsite (Times parking down the road) as our cars did not fit in the onsite parking garage. The room are big - we had the western-style rooms. Would have liked to use the spa and gym, but the cost was prohibitive. We booked online directly with the hotel and got a fairly good rate.

Clean and very good location to Asahikawa train station and surrounded by many restaurants, and a shopping mall, which is next to Asahikawa train station. there is a small local restaurant opens 24hours serving oir favourite beef bowl with egg. Starbuck in the shopping mall. So there is no need to have breakfast in the hotel.

Art Hotel lied to me. I booked a non smoking room, but they gave me a room filled with cigarettes smell. Although I wear a surgical mask, I could smelled it for sure. I asked for a change, they said they didn’t have any vacant rooms. The point is they lied. Is this “omotenashi”?

Booked early and managed to score the deluxe/executive king for a reasonable price for two nights during the Asahikawa winter festival. When we checked later the hotel was fully booked out.

As others have mentioned, the onsite car park (one of those automated tower things) was designed before the advent of SUVs/MPVs, so you'll have to use one of the many partner car parks if you drive anything larger than a sedan. These aren't too far away, but the downside is that you'll have to clear the snow off your car every morning.

The deluxe king is a great size and fits two comfortably, with space leftover for two large suitcases. My quibble with the room is that there are no power outlets near the bed at all for charging mobile phones. We had to request for an extension cord. The room is also rather old, and can do with a renovation. As others have noted, the windows do not open at all (they are completely sealed, and cannot be unlocked by staff). So it does get a bit hot and stuffy at times. We mostly turned the system off. More positively, our room, on the 13th floor, had great views of the city (including its sole roundabout!), the winter festival site, and the Ishikari River that wends through Asahikawa.

We made use of the independently run spa downstairs at the discounted guest rate of ¥700 (vs ¥2,260). The water wasn't natural spring water but did the job of warming up cold bodies after a day out in the -15°C weather.

Earlier on in the reviews, someone complained that about the availability of laundry machines, so while we were in the basement we checked out the laundromat, which appears to have gained two new all-in-one machines (¥600 for a complete wash/dry including detergent). They join the older two washers (¥200 a wash) and two dryers (¥100/30mins). Detergent costs ¥100, and is required only for the standalone washer.

Also mentioned earlier, the entire hotel (which has around 20 floors including basement levels) is serviced by two lifts. Which is inadequate, especially since the hotel caters to group tours. We faced a huge line once when a tour group checked in.

On a more pleasant note, the online chat function links to an actual human (and from my experience over two chats, the one and only same human) who was very helpful in sorting out some reservation issues and answering some of my questions about the hotel in English. Unfortunately the function seems to be missing now.

The bottom line is that the hotel is way past its prime. The problems such as the insufficient number of lifts, the centrally controlled air-conditioning system (you can't set the temperature) and the antiquated carpark, all cannot be easily fixed without tearing the whole building down and starting afresh. So for now, the hotel and you, the guest, will just have to make do.

Small but btight and spotless guestroom. Bed and pillows are super nice! I gotta find out a way how I can get my hands on those super comfy pillows that did a super job relieving tensions on my neck and upper back. Bathroom is extremely tight but they not only have one.of those Japanese style bidet toilet bowls, the seat cover was heated too! A super nice perk during winter. Buffet breakfast was excellent, lots of variety with very nice view to boot as the restaurant is located on the top floor of the building. Recommended!

1. Enquiries response
We rent a 7-seats car for our trip and I know that my car maybe too big for their carpark after I read their Hotel website. So, I sent facebook massager contact hotel directly and ask do they have any carpark space for such case. But no people reply me so far but their facebook page keep on update some promotion and news. That means someone must read my message but they no willing to reply me. 

2. Belt boy service
We arrived the hotel front door and stop the car. A belt boy stay inside the hotel and I am sure he saw me arrived and going to unload the baggages but he just stay inside the hotel until I raise my hands for assist. I asked him can bring the luggage cart for us? He said no spare cart at that moment. I said OK, but when I walked into the hotel front desk, I see so many cart no in use. 

3. Laundry room
If you are not the first time visit Japan, you will understand that self service laundry is very common facilities in Japan Hotel. This hotel have around 10 floor guest rooms, each floor I guess around 20 – 30 rooms. But the only have 2 machines in the laundry room which all located in the B/F. Every night I spent more than 2 hours to go up and down for wash my family‘s clothes. There is no staff in the laundry room to control, some guests didn’t pick their clothes after washed and keep on occupied the machines. 

4. Breakfast at 15/F
The breakfast buffet located in 15/F but only 2 lift in this Hotel. Therefore, in morning around 9am, when you finish breakfast in 15/F, you need to wait 15 mins for the lift inside the small lift lobby. Also, some guests going to check-out at that busy hr, they need to wait more than 10 mins. We stayed in 9/F so I goto ask any stairs we can go down from the restaurant. They told me that “NO”. I should wait the 2 lifts. I can’t believe if fire happen all people in the restaurant going to die.

Room is very spacious with king sized double bed. There are few restaurants available in hotel. About 15 mins walk to more central area if you want to eat outside. There are many restaurants open until midnight. It's a bit far away from JR station, about 20 mins walk. Hotel offer shuttle bus to and from JR station.

Nice hotel to stay overall.

Stayed for 2 nights in June 2015. We arrived in a Subaru Forrester and was told that our vehicle was too big to park in the hotel; we were directed to park in an open air carpark diagonally across the street which we had to pay an additional 1000 yen per night. (We discovered the next day that all the chocolates that we left in the car had melted!)

The hotel staff did not lift a finger to help us with the luggage, neither were we offered any help to have the luggage sent to our rooms. It was all DIY. Well, we paid considerably less than the two previous resorts which we stayed in, so instinctively we put ourselves on expectation management mode. Even then, nothing can prepare us for what came next.....we were totally shocked at the state of the beds. The mattresses were so worn out we can feel the bedsprings right against our bodies when we lie down. Wife said it was like sleeping on a divan without mattress - must say that was an accurate description. Needless to say, we did not sleep well and woke up many times throughout the night. Tried desperately to look for an alternative hotel but to no avail and we had no choice but to stay here for a second night. Wife complained that the toilet was not properly cleaned. The hot water pressure was good and consistent. The decor of the room is dated. Breakfast was served in a huge ballroom - very average.

Will not stay here again, learnt a precious lesson not to have last minute holiday arrangements if you can help it. Will try the JR Inn the next time I am in Asahikawa.
