The Parador de Tortosa is a wonderful site that allows to relax and enjoy one of the most beautiful views over the town and the mountain range. The breakfast and dinner were in a beautiful setting with great views from the dining hall.
The problem was very poor service in general. The staff on the whole were not particularly friendly, but I think this was due to training issues and the fact that in many cases they were rushed off their feet (cafe and restaurant, particularly at breakfast) - the criticisms below are aimed at the management. - The room we were initially allocated hadn't been made up. We asked for a room with a double bed, and didn't get one. No mention made of the request, no apology. - Nice bath, but no bath foam: everything was in dispensers fixed high up on the wall. - No complimentary mineral water, and no tea/ coffee making facilities. I stay in a lot of hotels, and these are basics. - Minbar: 2 bottles of water, two cokes, and a jar of peanuts. No price list. - Swimming pool opened at 11am, so impossible to have a swim before breakfast. - When we went to the pool, having booked a slot - Covid 19 - the pool attendent told us no less than three times that we were lucky that the pool wasn't busy as reservations were needed. Impossible to make him understand that we HAD a reservation, and not a language issue - my husband is Spanish. - At breakfast we got snapped at twice: once for taking a plate from a pile of plates that we'd assumed were for guests, as did others (how about a sign, or an explanation on arrival?) and the second time because my husband wasn't quick enough to put his mask on. We understand the reasoning, but politeness costs nothing. - Dinner: we'd booked a table, and my husband had mentioned that it was my birthday. They couldn't find the booking, and rather than saying don't worry we'll sort it out, we got a shrug and a shake of the head. Again, we had to repeat three times that we'd booked via The Fork, and it was only when I took out my mobile to show them the booking confirmation that they managed to locate it. It was over an hour before we got anything to eat (well, a slice of bread). The waiter who served the wine clearly didn't know how to serve wine ), and spilt it. No apology of course. The food when it finally arrived was good. Surely you can do better than this?…
We enjoyed a wonderful 3 nights. Our room as well as the restaurant and bar/lounge was hospitable and nicely appointed. An ample Breakfast buffet each morning was a perfect way to start the day with beautiful linens and impeccable service. Walking into the city from the hilltop provided needed exercise and a chance to see Tortosa’s old and new.
This Parador has an unique soul. I personally like it very much, also my friends and family. 3 times this year visited. Spring, Summer and Wintertime. Booking was done over phone directly and in my language (swiss german !!!!). My favorite room is # 314 (this time a gift to the Irish and Netherlands couple). But room # 210 and # 209 are very good with exceptional views, balcony on the sunrise side. The treatment received by the staff, was as usual extraordinary. Our stay was over X-mas (very busy) days. The table service in the main dining room was superb. Suggestions of daily menu is a must go. Very attentive, friendly and effective personnel. Only... my favorite place to have a drink was closed in the winter season and cash payment are limited to 1.500€. I feel like at home there. What else can one ask more?…
The parador is part of the Castillo de la Zuda complex, with walls and exterior from the Moorish period. From a historical point of view this parador is very nice to explore, including some objects like a gravestone from the Moorish period on display. It was a little difficult, albeit not extremely so, to find the parador, even with a GPS. The views from the parador are great. Just beneath the parador is the Cathedral, and beyond that, the wide Ebro river. We stayed in a junior suite, though it was more like a suite than a junior suite because the sitting area was separate from the bedroom. The bed was comfortable and the sitting area was likewise comfortable. I guess what distinguishes the junior suite from a suite is the size of the sitting area and the bedroom, which were perhaps not as large as one might find in a suite. The parador has a nice patio where one can sit, relax and enjoy a snack and a drink. The bar area, just inside the building from the patio has some good and inexpensive food that one can get for lunch. The staff was extremely friendly and ready to be of assistance promptly. We were very impressed also by how quickly the maids cleaned the room and made the bed, always with a smile on their faces. To get into Tortosa itself, unless your are the hiking type of person, requires a taxi--which the front desk will get for you. Breakfast was included with the room, and it was very good and the choices of food available fairly substantial. All in all a very nice parador to stay in.…
