It's fine. Everything I needed and a short walk from a central plaza and the market. I arrived late from train station without a reservation. The room was a little too perfumed for my liking, though. Restaurant in hotel lobby seems popular but I didn't eat there.

Yes, the Monte Carlo is past its prime but it looks as if some renovation and scrubbing has occurred since the bashing reviews of a few years ago. The lobby and common areas are more impressive than the rooms but it's still clean, safe and cheap; a good overnight option on the long trip from the West Coast to central...

Yes this place has seen better days but I respectfully suggest that the previous review was an overreaction and overstatement. We stayed one night after arriving from Tucson by night bus. It was a welcome find at that price and location. It does have some "colonial charm" in the common areas, a pleasant staff and excellent breakfasts served in the...

On arrival late at night the desk clerk knew nothing of our reservation. Our room was unrenovated and without doubt the worst hovel we have ever stayed in. A heavy layer of dust and filth covered everything, including the aged decrepit "furniture". The patio doors were "locked" with a broken piece of wood. The bed sheets were threadbare and a...

I stayed at the Montecarlo for just one night before taking the Chepe train to Chihuahua. I enjoyed the colonial atmosphere, the staff was friendly and helpful, giving me a wake-up call and having a taxi waiting when I came down (and telling me how much the regular prices were so the driver could not rip me off). The food...

“You might ask for a room that does not face the main roads (2) since the town wakes up very early. Then again, if you're catching El Chepe, you have to get up very early yourself.”
