I totally agree with Igal, they wanted $75 USD for an ash tray. I bargained them down to $15. And the same ash tray was in the airport for $22, so don't be afraid to aim low! Also, they wanted $150 USD for a purse that... More

Also, they wanted $150 USD for a purse that we ended up getting for $25! And they will tell you that they will give you a discount because you are their first sale of the night, no matter what time it is! So, go shopping with a glass of champagne in hand and enjoy!

What is a deciding factor for you may be different than what rings the bell for others. Do you like activities, or to veg, Small resort, or large, Beach person, or pool person. I've been to VIM and ERC (but not EPM), in fact checked out of VIM Sunday. Have already booked my trip for next year. For me, between the two, price is the deciding factor. Depending on when you are going, Excellence is running super cheap a year out, but is more expensive normally. ERC is less than EPM. Pros for both (erc brand)...great swim ups, no dinner reservations required (except for Teppanyaki), no wrist bands, nightly entertainment, gorgeous rooms and grounds, plenty of umbrellas and loungers, top shelf liquor at both. ERC pros...Lobster is included, more intimate resort (smaller acreage wise), easier access to Puerto Morelos if you want to walk into town, I found the food to be slightly better at ERC, "secret" box for room service where they drop it off and pick it up, liquor in your room for the basic rooms. Pros for VIM, basic room is much less than the basic room at Excellence, larger property with lots of foliage so you have more of a jungle feel, VIM seemed to have more daytime activities, and I liked the beach better at VIM (further from town, so less foot traffic), but EPM might be better than ERC. Cons- men's dress code for dinner, but that is standard at most of the nicer ( and not so nicer ) resorts. There are really no other great cons for me, so it's coming down to cost for my next visit.
