6 bedrooms + a local wood restaurant overlooking the Caribbean sea. When you come by stonedge, we will put you together with other guests, you'll become friends. Some without rental cars will meet some with rental cars and together you'll go on tours under the directions given by Didier, family hotel,.
Everything was perfect, we had a great welcome by Didier who is a very good person who is in sharing and who knows how to put us well. In Dominica the Stonedge Hotel is ideally located between the north and south of the island. The rooms are very good, the beach is not far and there is tiboy Didier's dog and his cat are adorable.

We had booked 3 nights at Stonedge. Ultimately, we stayed there until the end of our 7 day stay in Dominica. Accommodation conditions are simple but complete. The location of the hotel, in a peaceful location and on a promontory facing the Caribbean, is appreciable. The blazing sunsets. Didier, the hotelier, friendly and attentive, offers tours of the island. He introduced us to the best sites on the island, but also met people from deep Dominica. His puns are incredible! Thank you Didier Sincerely

At $16.50 US per night each person, Stonedge is the best value on Dominica, in the opinion of a second time visitor to the island. Didier is a dedicated, accommodating and attentive host, one who is always willing to provide service to all his guests, in any way he possibly can. As the Stonedge website advises "snobs and maniacs not welcome". At this price, one should not expect amenities available at The Ritz. What you will get is a clean, well equipped but rustic simple cottage with the best breezes and sunset views available anywhere in the Caribbean. Stonedge is in a very safe neighbourhood, has a free miniature golf course, lovely gardens and, most of all, peace and quiet. Didier's free tour on Tuesdays is what you'd pay $60 US per person for if booked with a tour operator.... fantastic. Do not question that it really is "free", it truly is! Didier takes one day off a week, Tuesdays, and likes to get away from the house to hike or visit other areas in the country to help him regroup and unwind. He loves having guests along for company. His cooking is not "fine cuisine" but, again, for the prices charged, "you get what you pay for". With no restaurants close by, even having a restaurant open and available for breakfasts and suppers every day shows Didier's dedication to his guests. Regarding the comments made by a guest who stated "Didier wanted to save the water".... only those who respect the scarcity of rain water during the Caribbean dry season can appreciates how difficult it is to supply ample water to all guests. We would have extended our 2 night stay by a few more days had we not already paid for our next accommodation ahead of time. Stonedge would not be an acceptable place for anyone wanting and expecting to "dress for dinner" but the most wonderful place for those budget travellers who appreciate a place of this high calibre at such a reasonable rate. Hats off to Didier for his committment to his guests. V & L, Canadian gals, April 10 & 11, 2006.

The Stonedge cabins are located on an amazing cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The amenities are basic but adequate, about what you would expect for the price. Didier, the owner, is a friendly guy who is willing to give advice on where to go and how to get there. Dinah, his girlfriend (?) seems genuinely nice. If you are on an extremely limited budget, Stonedge is an option you probably shouldn't overlook. That is the good, here is the bad. First, the tours... We chose to stay at Stonedge to take advantage of the cheap tours offered by the owner, Didier. We inquired ahead of time to insure that guided tours would be available during our stay. However, every morning but one we were informed that there would be no tours that day. The one morning when there was a tour we were told that it was going to the north end of the island. Since we were staying in the north for the last days of our trip, we decided not to go. We found out later that Didier changed his mind, without telling us, and took the group to see waterfalls on the southern side of the islands. Other reviews indicate that Didier provides a free tour on Tuesdays -- this appears to no longer be the case. Second, the mosquitoes... There are no mosquito nets provided at Stonedge and the cottages get hot hot hot at night. Unless you want to broil, you keep the windows open at night. As a result, our nights were spent hiding under a sheet, listening to the mosquitoes buzzing around our heads. When and if we finally managed to fall asleep, we woke up with itchy bites all over legs, face, arms, ect. After requesting a mosquito net, we were offered bug spray. I was, however, reluctant to spray Deet over my face before sleep -- more bites. Third, the food... Dinners cost start at $10 and go up from there. For this price you can get a salad consisting of mostly cabbage or "spaghetti" a.k.a. ramen instant noodles. It's not that the food is really bad (though it's not good) but it's a lot to pay for instant noodles. Breakfasts were a better deal. Fourth, the location... Driving ourselves around the island, we found that Salisbury is pretty far from virtually anything on the island you'd want to see. Trafalgar Valley (Boiling Lake hike, Titou Gorge, Trafalgar falls, Middleham falls, ect.) is a 45-60 minute drive, Victoria falls, Champagne Beach, Scotts Head are even further. If you make this your home base on vacation, plan on spending at least 2 hours a day getting to and from where you want to go. Fourth the company... Meeting fellow travelers has been one of the highlights of traveling in my experience, and I wish I spoke more languages to broaden the number of travelers I could communicate with. However, I am not fluent in French and I found this to be pretty socially isolating at Stonedge. During our stay, all but one of the other guests spoke almost exclusively in French and the owner concentrated virtually all of his time and attention on those guests. As a result, my boyfriend and I often found ourselves alone at a small table while the rest of the guests socialized a few feet away. I don't really blame the owners for this -- though they could have made some effort to include us -- but it was a bummer. If you are primarily an English speaker, this is something you may want to keep in mind. The island is primarily English speaking and you'll probably be able to meet more people at other guest houses.

Lodging: very cute little yellow and blue houses, or more demure rooms in the main house, my bungalow (if thats the word for them) had a bunk bed, mosquito nets available for free, as is a fan (these will keep you bite-free), no AC, no hot water (this is unecessary and wasteful in Dominica), your own shower, toilet, and sink in 3 small separated areas in the bungalow, no TV, radio, clock, or phone (didn't you come to get away from it all?)
View: across a steep cliff and facing the Caribbean sea, great susets, I never caught a sunrise, the bungalows are literally a few feet from the edge, and the main house is farther back
Dining- open air with excellent owner/host/cook Didier
Entertainment- Didier often rents movies that you can watch in the common room, he also is a humorist, if you speak French you will have the added plus of his many dubious "jeux de mots"
Breakfast: excellent local fresh fruit juice, great tea, I didn't taste the coffee, had crepes everyday
Dinner: EXCELLENT salads with tuna steak, EXCELLENT lobster/crayfish meal, excellent spaghetti with meatballs, great prices, the meals are gems, if you decide not to stay here, come for dinner a few times!!
Drinks: great selection of rums, wines, etc...
Tours: Didier and his employees can take you anywhere in Dominica! he has a big truck that he transports the group with, the rate is divided by number of tourists, so much cheaper than most on island when you are a group
Proximity to beaches: Two within walking distance, very warm water, dark sand, mostly pebbly (I recommend water shoes), relaxing... the North coast white beaches are definitely worth a day long visit (they're a substantial drive away), they were TOTALLY EMPTY, I saw a total of 5 locals on one beach (some kids playing), and one on another (walked through), not a single tourist, had an entire 200 meter expanse of beach and palm trees totally to myself for hours
Activities: two scuba diving places very close, i didn't go but Didier would be happy to tell you more about their avilable excursions and rates
Weather: It was very hot in May, just the way I like it. The rain is refreshing, it rained one entire day, than for less than an hour and very hard right before I left. I got more tanned than I have ever been in my life.
Getting there: about an hour drive from the airport through some of the most magnificent scenery I have ever seen, if you want to relax as much as possible in Dominica, hire a taxi to take you there, some roads have many potholes, are very thin and windy, and Dominicans drive fast... also Stonedge is is at the end of a very rocky and holy driveway from the main road, there are plenty of signs though, and you can always ask a Dominican if you think you are lost.

Ok, the breakfast was good. But you know something's wrong when the owner of the place you're staying exclaims, "I had a good day! No one came." That about sums up his additude towards us as guests. We requested a mosquito net, standard in even the basic b&bs in Dominica. He said he had one, but wouldn't get it for us. His water supply is free- collected from rainwater- but he wanted to save it, so he kept turning it off. We couldn't flush the toilet- inside our tiny bungalow- without asking, and then he'd turn off the water again. I had to run up to the main house to get him to turn the water back on when I was left with shampoo in my hair in the middle of a shower- he had turned it off again. We're not sure how he accommodates a full house! Maybe he feels like doing something then...
He apparently didn't feel like going to the market either, as our dinner included ramen noodles.
This host has good feedback online, but I believe he is only attentive when he feels like it. He told us he likes Dominica because he doesn't have to work hard or pay a lot of bills. It's pretty clear he doesn't.
Find another place. There are great guesthouses with attentive and kind owners, who keep it simple and in tune with their environment. It doesn't have to be complicated. A long-drop is better than a toilet you can't flush!

Excellent for the budget eco travler looking for a quiet place with a great host. Accomadation consists of five basic cottages overlooking the ocean and a couple of other rooms inside a main larger building. Everything is clean and well maintained but rustic. The property is only a few years old but has alot of character and the setting in really nice. Its about 1/4 mile off a main road and overlooks the ocean. It's a little out of the way but you can easily catch a bus on the main road during the day. If you have a rental car its no problem. The place is owned and operated by a Belgian named Didiere. He is very helpful and as good a host as your going to find. He also offers good meals at a reasonable price. If you decide to check it out just remember its an eco resort and can seem a bit like summer camp accomodations but its nice. The cost when I stayed was $15 USD a night per person. I stayed longer than originally planned.

I stayed here a bit more than a week with a friend. This is a very fun, laid back place to stay in Dominica. The property sits several hundred feet above the sea at the edge of a cliff, so don't expect access to the sea. Or a working swimming pool.
This place is frequented mostly be travelers for whom English is not a first language. French and Spanish are more frequently spoken by the people who run this place, though Didier speaks very good English.
But if you are a speaker of English as a first language, you should be aware that your first language is not the first language of this place, so English speakers who are not fluent in French should plan to adapt or stay elsewhere. The owner of this place is not trying to cater to people from the U.S. or the UK, though he is very friendly to any person who can accept and appreciate his place for being exactly what it is--a fun and inexpensive place to stay in Dominica.
Didier (the owner from Belgium) and his wife are incredibly warm, friendly people who give everyone who stays they a very personal level of attention. They adopt you as their friend as soon as you arrive.
If what you're looking for is an inexpensive place to stay in Dominica, where you can eat, drink and make new friends from a variety of countries, this is your place!

Thanks Didier for your welcome. I really enjoyed my time in this so special place. The bungalows are nice, well equipped (shower and toilet in each bungalow) and the view is priceless... Thanks also Didier to give me a ride to "Chez La Doudou" (great place to Dive) and to take me back. He's definitely not a "lazy host". He knows good places in the island and won't hesitate to share them with you. I hope you'll enjoy the photos. If you want more information, you can contact me.

"There are 3 options: 3 (soon to be 5) new rooms, I stayed here, excellent. Some older wooden cabins, and bunks in the main building, I do not have any input on the last 2 options."
