I don't understand any negative reviews about this hotel we had a wonderful stay this hotel was built in 1903 it's a very historic beautiful charming hotel full of character. The only thing wrong was a didn't have air-conditioning aside from that we love this historic building
We chose this place because of the walking proximity to UC Berkeley and the great deal we got on Bookings.com. The main buildings are historic with lovely Victorian architecture and a charming private garden with tables and chairs in between the buildings. We had two upper rooms with a view of the garden. They were clean with a nice decor. It was nice and quiet at night. The walls are thin so we could hear our sons in the next room. One of our window locks was broken as well as the door chain lock. Our sons' room had a quirky feature where the toilet/bath tub room door could not be closed because the toilet was in the way. Overall, the property felt neglected, the outside of the buildings needed repairs and the parking lot was not clean. We did like the fact that there was hardly anyone in the common areas with no interior hallways for social distancing purposes. There was no breakfast and no room service because of COVID-19 which we preferred. Once we got our key, we never had to go into lobby for the two nights that we were there. This inn has so much potential to be a delightful boutique hotel. I hope the owners care enough to make it special and as safe as possible.…
Since the ownership has changed this property is no longer a good deal. The office staff is exceedingly unhelpful. The breakfast used to be delicious. Now the eggs (powdered?) are dry and tasteless and the potatoes are cold. The orange juice is watered down. There is only one person cooking and restocking the food—the poor woman works frantically—and no one cleans the tables between guests. The upholstery on the chairs is in tatters. The garden, however, is still beautiful, and there are cookies in the afternoon. Our car and one other were broken into overnight, the owners had to be told to sweep up the glass, were unsympathetic and certainly did not offer a small discount on our bill as a courtesy. The Berkeley police officer was kind but commented that the new owners were clueless. We have family nearby and have stayed there many times but will never return.…
Dishonest staff and manager. We showed up to this hotel to check in, reservation in hand, and the woman at the desk informed us that they didn't have our reservation. After initially saying they had no record of our reservation, they eventually admitted they had overbooked the hotel and had no rooms for us. After a back and forth with the front desk and the manager, they finally admitted that they overbooked rooms for the night, knowing full well they'd have to turn us away. The hotel itself is seedy at best, we had another night with the hotel but cancelled it.
The rooms were fine. Hardly the best but serviceable. The main issue is that if you’re traveling for business or academic reasons, the front desk claimed they were utterly incapable of splitting the bill between two guests. Not sure how much technology this really requires, but given that this is a common situation for business/academic travel, it seems like a hotel should be able to accommodate this. The person staffing the front desk didn’t seem particularly professional. She seemed mostly interested in making her life as easy as possible. Nevermind if it makes the lives of their guests more difficult. Not in a particularly convenient location either. Next time I’ll try to stay at a more legitimate establishment.
