We were speaking to some friends in Tokyo, very excited about our next destination, Tsumago, and sampling the highly regarded hospitality of Ryokan Fujioto, and our friends blinked askance at us. They never knew what they were missing. Stepping into Ryokan Fujioto is like stepping into an inn along a mountain trail frequented by samurai, traders, and travelers in the... More

What a great place to stay! Wonderfull staff, really incredible friendly people! As guest you feel so welcome here. Nothing but good words about their hospitality! Its very easy to communicate because the English is very fluent. The ryokan is very authentic with beautiful Japanese gardens all around and in the middle of the enchanting town of Tsumago. The real... More

We loved our 1 night stay here. Very good value for experience and staff goes out of their way to explain everything. What a wonderful way to experience the area and the food is fantastic. The meals are representative of the area and quite different than other ryokan experiences we have had on our trip. If the weather is clear,... More

After hiking the Nakasendo trail from Magome it was great to arrive in beautiful Tsumago at this traditional inn, which was so much in keeping with its surroundings. Great welcome and explanation in perfect English from owner Franco. The Hinoki room was very spacious overlooking the garden. As mentioned in other reports the walls are thin so to sleep well... My husband and I spent 2 nights at Ryokan Fujioto and we're glad we did. We had stopped in Matsumoto on our way from Tokyo so we arrived a bit late to walk the Nakasendo highway that day, plus it had gotten a bit rainy. We could have walked the highway in the morning and left in the afternoon as... More

Great ryokan in the Kiso Valley. There are not a lot of options in Tsumago, but this one is the best. Husband and wife run this place to perfection. It's rustic, but with tons of charm. The meals, cooked by the wife, are great. The location is perfect if you plan on hiking the Nakasendo trail between Magome and Tsumago.... More

Franco runs a wonderful Ryokan in a beautiful setting. The attention to detail is superb and the hospitality far beyond the standards of any Western hotel. It is as if you are a personal guest. He and his wife take great pains to introduce their guests to Japanese culture and food.

What a lovely experience. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The roykan is quite - also during the night. So we slept very well after a delicious dinner - that was served to perfection. Besides they described what kind of food they served. Check out is at 10am. It's nice with no rush!

A truly great experience in every way! Staff, food, location everything was perfect and done in a way that was exceptional! This was our first time staying in a Ryokan and the staff made sure it was a great one by explaining everything to us in a great way so we clearly understood how to do things, dinner was the...
