We booked this trip through Hotwire at a ridiculous (cheap) rate and I guess you get what you pay for. This was billed as a 3 star resort at a cheap price. There were no refunds and no changes allowed. We were given very little information on how to find the "lodge" and since our plane arrived 3 hours late were left to find it after dark with a rental car. We stopped several times to ask directions and since no one ever heard of the place we spent the first night of our vacation and a different (way more expensive) resort. Using their Wi-Fi for a better location and daylight the next morning we managed to find the neighborhood and after knocking on several doors were able to get in touch with our landlord and move into our "lodge". The Lodge is actually a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house in a very poor neighborhood that he rents out by the room. For the 2 weeks we rented there were no other guests so we had the whole house to ourselves. There was a cable tv and wifi and the furnishings were sufficient. The washer in the kitchen did not work and the "laundry" service involved the housekeeper handwashing our clothes and hanging them on the outside line to dry. There was only one set of sheets that fit queen size bed in the room we rented so after 3 or 4 days we were "upgraded" to the larger room with a full size bed, a private bath where we had to unclog the shower to get it to drain, and a private balcony. The kitchen had lots of dishes and a few pots and pans but we could only find 2 forks. Most of the cupboards and drawers were filled with junk. There were a lot of old water jugs and milk jugs with water stored in case a storm would contaminate the water supply. We boiled any water for cooking and bought drinking water. There were no screens on any windows and no available air conditioning. We drove an hour every day over horrible roads to get to the beautiful beaches on the other coast. Our landlord was very friendly and took us to a Sunday afternoon party with his local friends on a local beach where we had to drive through the woods on a rocky path to get there. We enjoyed talking with the people and felt very comfortable with them. The neighbor across the street greeted us every morning and we met her grandchildren. I had nice conversations with the housekeeper and felt a real connection with many of the island people we met. We were proud to have discovered the real St Lucia that no one ever sees. Our bubble burst when after we were there a week we came back to the house to find our balcony door open. We had money and jewelry hidden in our clothes that was taken. I guess we were lucky our passports and credit cards were not taken as well. We did not know where to find a police station to file a report and probably would not have trusted them anyway. Our landlord said he was very sorry, that this has never happened before, "would get to the bottom of this and see that our belongings were recovered" but we have heard nothing to indicate that he has found the thief or taken measures to protect other guests. The insurance we had purchased did not cover cash or jewelry without a purchase reciept. After 3 months of emails to Hotwire asking for a response they finally offered us $25 to use on another trip. It was a unique experience. St Lucia is a beautiful island with a lot of places to explore.and the all inclusive we stayed at on the other side of the island was a totally different vacation.
