Detailed Reviews
My stepson and I spent two nights camping and two days rafting here. I reviewed the rafting separately, so I will cover the resort here.
Overall we had a great experience. The resort is quite large and extends far back from the river. Our campsite was decent (and free with the rafting trip) and included a picnic table and fire pit.
We had a dinner and two breakfasts and the food was excellent. Typical camp style buffets, but excellent quality with friendly service.
In terms of Covid-19, masks and sanitizing were required when getting food and when indoors. The staff was very strict about this, which I appreciated.
One night we went for a cooling dip in the pool, which was nice because it was HOT until sundown.
On the slight downside, the showers/bathrooms building could have been cleaner. There was a broken urinal which was full of gross water...if not fixed promptly, should have been covered up.
Lastly, with all the attention to masks and sanitizing (again, very much appreciated) I was surprised when checking in that the girl at the reception desk wasn't wearing a mask. The first employee you see when checking in should be following the protocols. Pretty big fail under the circumstances.
Overall though we had a great stay.

We stayed in Cabin #3. Arrival and check-in were smooth and the place was mostly clean upon arrival. It’s older and the furniture looks old and tired. Little details like dirty baseboards gross me out but overall it was clean. Fridge/freezer, two burner cooktop, toaster and micro in the kitchen. Coffee maker too. Cooktop is slow to heat and pans in cabinet are worse for wear so bring your own if you prefer.
Bed was mushy and although advertised as a queen size definitely looks more like a full size. Closet has no bar to hang anything on. Bathroom is sufficient, shower was nice, good water pressure. Clean towels provided which was nice. The deck area is nice and the river views are excellent. Deck could use some de-webbing. BBQ is old and in need of a good cleaning but worked for our salmon in foil dinner.
NOTE: Sat and Sun mornings the river access points nearest to the cabin are used by the rafting company from approx 9am to approx 2pm. I didn’t see this mentioned on the website when I booked. It wasn’t a huge deal but you really can’t set up chairs and enjoy the river until after 2pm.
For $250/night I expected a little more luxury but we had a nice stay and would likely go back again. Staff is wonderful and very helpful. A small general store and coffee shop are within walking distance and pizza/tacos, etc are within a couple miles. Beautiful, historic area.

Room Tip: Bring a fan if you’re there in summer. The cabin has a small A/C unit but a fan helps move the air.

I have a van but was expected to go with an tv site even though I didn’t need the amenities of an rv. Since I was paying for electricity though, I specifically asked if it included 120 v which I was assured it was. NOT!! Once I got to this site and found out, I called the reservation number, and they said it was in the paperwork after making the reservation. That didn’t help since I wasn’t able to cancel the reservation once it was made! And they shouldn’t have told me I had access to 120 like many campsites still in the first place. Also, had trouble getting out in and out of the campsite as my tires were spinning in the soft dirt. It was nice to have a pool and showers. The other thing was I was told when I made the reservation check-in was at 3 PM but also in the paperwork, it said 4 PM. the reservation desk really needs to get things straight!

The service was horrible! We booked a site for a van and the only requirement we asked for was electricty which was confirmed. We were given a spot in the hot sun with no electricty and there were a number of available sites that were not booked. We asked to move with a site with electricty (not even mentioning the sun) and we were given major attitude by the staff. The person behind the counter was extremely rude and disrespectful. This place could be very nice. It has a good location and the sites are okay (just average) but the service is horrible.

If I had the option to do a negative star I would!
Planned a rafting trip over the weekend for my children and I
We arrived late Friday and were unable to upgrade to a cabin as they were all closed, not booked just closed.
We set our tents up in the rain and made the best of it.
Then late that evening I got a call that my father had been rushed to the hospital so I choose to stay the night and leave first thing in the morning.
I went in as the office opened Saturday morning and told them about the situation and asked if I could simply reschedule the $450 rafting trip I had scheduled for the kids and I.
Was told no one is in the office and had to go through the reservation desk on Monday . So we packed up and rushed to the two hour drive home to see my father.
Just received a call from Melinda Jones the lead reservationist and was told that they were unwilling to reschedule the rafting trip and I would loose the $450 I spent despite the need for having to leave unexpectedly to see my father in the hospital. What kind of family friendly business is this?
Asked to speak to the manager was told this is as far as it goes, asked who made the decision to not let me reschedule and refused to release a name.
The spot was beautiful but the customer service is atrocious. I would never recommend this place to anyone because of how poorly they handled an already very difficult situation.

Our trip was saved by the campground's zero tolerance for disrespectful, horrible behavior from the people near us.
These people were so loud and tried to bully everyone! Screaming at the staff and other campers. Just drunk and disruptive.
They would not listen to anyone about quieting down and got aggressive with the staff.
We almost left after that first night knowing they were there for the length of our stay.
But next morning they were being asked to leave!! Since they would not listen to repeated attempts to just reel it in and were even more disrespectful the morning after, threatening to leave bad reviews and bad mouthing the management and staff, they got thrown out.
We were so relieved! The other parties around us, mostly families, were just as surprised. It was so nice to know our vacation was more important than the bad review those guys would leave!
It was great to see the other campers and staff were protected from being abused by those entitled jerks
Great job on part of the Management to support the rules and zero tolerance for that kind of behavior.

My family and I have been camping for many years at this camp ground . We have made many memories here with family and friends. Having so many places to choose to go camping at and yet we remain loyal to American river resort . The staff is so friendly and greet you with a smile. and the camp grounds are clean and well managed. There is one lady named Chris that overseas the grounds and office but her main goal is for you to ALWAYS have a SAFE AND GOOD TIME and she sees that all campers respect the rules in the park and that everyone one enjoys there stay. Chris may only see you once or twice a year camping at the park but it doesn't matter she will remember you every time and welcomes you and your family and friends with a great smile . There is always something for everyone to do there from fishing in the catch and release pond, fishing in the river or better yet go white water rafting which we love to do. We go with River Otters for white water rafting small company but this team gets more personable with your party and share much history along the river. There is a 2 hour run and a longer you just have to plan ahead and contact the park to get number to set this up. Also there is a swimming pool for everyone good for kids and adults. Showers and flush toilets. and most of all there is a small store there but if you need more than beer or soda than you can go into shingle springs 9 miles away and food max is there as well as Safeway and also enough fast food places too if you want to grab something to head home. We love this place and make it our home away from home for our family. They also have river view sites for camping but you must get your reservation for these sites early and we now rent a river view cabin each time we go and the cabins are fully contained with kitchen with everything you need a queen size bed and sofa's that make into beds and also a hideaway bed too. BBQ for grilling and a view on balcony to watch rafters going down the river. If you love to get away from the city and want to enjoy quite and waking up to the sound of the river every morning, gaze at the stars at night sit by a campfire and feel relaxed and know that you will have enjoyed a great time and made memoires to remember forever.

Second time at the American River resort and enjoyed it as much as the first time. Nice variety of campsites, RV sites, and cabins to select. Can hear the rush of the American River from most sites. The pond in the center with ducks and geese give it a nice ambiance. Grounds were well kept and illuminated at night with solar lights. The swimming pool is the largest of all the camping resorts on the river and enjoyable. Bathrooms are clean, with plenty of hot water for the showers. Only drawback is the one bathroom location that requires the entire camping population to walk from all distances. The location of the resort is within a few minutes walk of beautiful historic Coloma (and state park), where James Marshall was the first to discover gold in California in 1848--sparking the famed 49ers gold rush the following year, of which so many things in the state are named after.

Do your self a favor and take your money to a good camp site like Rivers Bend or Camp Lotus. Camp sites at American river aresort are tiny, showers are even smaller. That's not what ruined my camping experience with them. I went to camp there for a rafting trip, I own my own boat so we just needed a camp site. 7:40 a.m. I went to get gear set out for our rafting van shuttle, I asked a worker where to stage this, The American River Resort worker couldn't tell me where to get ready, so I choose what I thought would be the best spot, the parking lot. I was airing up mine and my friends' boats, listing to music no louder than my raft pump. We're getting ready for Coloma Shuttle to come pick our gear up, this is when a worker came out and asked me to turn my music down. I didn't know playing music was going to be a problem in a big parking lot in which we were pretty far from the office or any other campers. So I turned down the music, at their fair request. After this, we went back to getting ready for what would be an awesome day of rafting, thinking nothing of my interaction with the worker. After this, the owner Annie comes out and instantly showed his displeasure with me, telling me to turn my music off. I tell him ok, no problem. Then he asked me what are you even doing here, I was confused. He went on telling me this is not where Coloma Shuttle picks up. He tells me I was taking up space that customers would need to park, I looked around at a parking lot that would park thirty or more cars and at this time I was one of five cars using the lot. I felt he was rude to me so I was rude back. I'm starting to write a novel, so I'll just cut to the chase. After that argument, he cancelled my camping reservation, kicked myself and 13 friends out of his camp ground and is not giving me back my money with only staying one night, and paid for a remaining two. I'm writing this review five days after staying there and I keep calling trying to get my refund and he is saying he will not pay even though I cleaned my tiny sites, spotless.
