The Rivers Inlet Sportsman’s Club is an all-inclusive, fly-in fishing lodge. We offer world-class trophy salmon & halibut fishing. Access to our fishing lodge is a direct 90 min flight by seaplane only, no roads = no crowds. We are located on the pristine, rugged & remote central British Columbia coast 300 miles north of Vancouver. Snow-capped mountains reach down to the sea & the scenery & wildlife viewing is spectacular. The Kelly family has been showing guests fabulous fishing adventures for over 35 years so we are quite simply the best. Friendly service, great food & accommodations - one guest said 'we tried the rest & came back to the best!'

Short Summary: Fishing and weather were bad but outside of the lodge's control. However, we felt the service from the lodge owner was quite poor and we left feeling ripped off. We paid for a 4-day trip and got a 2-day trip. There are far too many other better options to ever choose this place, in my opinion. I would not go back if it was free. The other people we spoke with also told us they would not go back. I am an enthusiastic promoter of operations that provide a positive experience. It really pains me to write a negative review. I have written 23 TripAdvisor reviews and have never given a 1 or 2 star rating until now. However, I do feel it is important to share my experience so that others can avoid being in the same situation that we were in. Detailed Account: In May I discovered that I would have some time to go fishing with my daughter during the summer. However, only one relatively narrow time window would work given school dates and other activities. I called around to some lodges in both Canada and Alaska, but unfortunately all of my top choices were booked up for that week. Rivers Inlet Sportsman's Lodge was the only place I found that had availability. They offered 4 day and 5 day trips on set days. I usually fish at least 5 full days, but the 4 day was the only trip that worked with our school schedule so we figured that would still be enough time to catch limits and so we booked that. When we got the detailed itinerary, we found that, based on the flight schedule they gave us, we would be able to fish 6 hours the day we landed, then two full days, and then only 2 hours in the morning of the last day. To me that is not a 4-day fishing trip, that is a 3-day fishing trip. Had I known that up front I would not have booked, but we had already committed and paid all the money up front since we booked relatively close to the date and they made it clear it was not refundable so we figured we would keep an open mind and make the best of it. Ultimately my daughter was unable to go, so my wife came instead. She had not fished with me in 18 years, and unfortunately after this experience I don't think she will ever come fishing with me again. We were told that our flight would leave at 11:30am (there are five daily flights and we were put on the last one) so we should show up at the seaplane airport at 10:45am. We got there a little early just in case, and then were told by the airline that, due to weather, our flight would be delayed. The weather was clear blue sky as far as the eye could see in Vancouver, but apparently it was very foggy between there and Rivers Inlet. The airline told us to sit tight and they would update us in a half hour on the weather. This continued for hours, and it was frustrating watching plane after plane take off to go to other destinations. Finally at 4pm we were told that our flight would not make it out that day, although the first flight did end up making it out to the lodge that day. Lucky for them, but not so much for those of us on the later flights. We had to go find a place to stay for the night (an unfortunate additional cost) and try again the next day. I was extremely disappointed to lose a whole day of fishing, especially when the fishing time was so limited to begin with. I called the lodge representative, who seemed very overwhelmed with the whole situation. I thought that was odd, because bad weather is not at all unusual in this area and float plane delays are common. It seems like something that the lodge should plan for and have an immediate contingency plan ready to go, but in speaking with the representative it seemed like she was really scrambling to figure out what to do. I broached the subject of some sort of consideration since I was sold a 4-day fishing trip and would now be getting something much closer to a 2-day fishing trip. She said I would need to talk to the owner when I got to the lodge for anything further. We were told to arrive at 8:30am the next morning at the airport for a 9am flight. Unfortunately, weather again delayed things, and there were also three planes ahead of us in line to go to that lodge. We really got the short end of the stick being placed on the 5th flight. Finally it was our turn and we left just before noon. By the time we arrived at the lodge, got lunch, listened to the orientation, and finally got in a boat to fish it was around 2:30. We had a guide the first day, Michael, and I must say I was very pleased with him. Fishing was very slow and we only got one small keeper salmon (and several tiny ones we threw back), but he gave it a good effort and was friendly and provided a lot of information about how to approach fishing the next day on our own. He even gave us a couple lures out of his personal stash to try. At that point I was pretty discouraged, because we only had one full day of fishing left (even though we had just gotten there) and only had one small salmon in the freezer. I was waiting for the owner to approach us about the lost time, but she never did. She never even introduced herself or welcomed us. The other people on our plane felt the same way we did, so we agreed to speak with her together the next day. Bright and early the next morning my wife and I set off on our own to fish. The fishing was better, and we landed 12 salmon, although only 3 were keeper size so we only kept those and threw the rest back. In hindsight maybe we should have kept some of the 16-inchers that we technically could have kept, but it just didn't seem right. We had some equipment failures, including the driver's seat mount breaking off and the drag on one of the salmon reels not working at all which necessitated me holding it the whole time to keep the line from flying out instead of being able to troll with the rod in the holder. We went back in for lunch and switched out the reel and got a boat with a chair for the driver. In the afternoon the equipment all worked fine, but unfortunately the fishing was very slow. We caught a couple small throwback salmon and then decided to explore some bottom fishing. We got a few lingcod on Michael's lures and then trolled until 7:30pm with no love from the salmon. There were some nice fish caught here and there by others (including a 35lber caught by a boat from another lodge), and one boat that we talked to from our lodge did really well, but for the most part the fishing was tough across the board. While we were out fishing, one of the other guests who had been in our plane got tired of waiting and went to talk to the owner He asked if there was anything that could be done about the lost time. Her answer was a surprising hard no and he indicated that she was not at all open to compromise or finding a solution. He seemed like a very reasonable guy to me and said he explored various options like some extra fishing time or a discount on a future trip, but her only response was to go on and on about the difficulties of running a lodge, the various operating challenges, how there wasn't a dollar to spare, etc. I have run a business myself and sympathize with the challenges and costs, but those things are not the customers' problems and you shouldn't gripe to them about it and not address their legitimate concerns. After I heard from the other guest about the owner's response, I decided not to even try to ask for any money back. Instead, I approached her and just asked if it might be possible to get some extra fish to take home since we lost so much of our fishing time and weren't going to come close to getting a limit. She indicated that they didn't have any extra fish, and that she herself would like to have some fish but didn't have any. It seemed like an odd response for someone who owns a fishing lodge. I asked if perhaps we could be sent a box of fish later on and she said it would be illegal for her to provide any fish caught by anyone at the lodge. I asked later about having some fish ordered from the cannery for us (which clearly would be legal) and again the answer was no, with no alternative presented. At first I was very angry about what felt like a lack of concern for the customer experience, but eventually that anger gave way to a numb disbelief that anyone would consciously choose to run any business this way, let alone a hospitality business. Even if the owner did not want to give a full refund for the time lost, there were so many things that could have easily been offered: meeting us halfway on a partial refund, offering a discount on a future trip, ordering us some extra fish to take home, giving us some extra fishing time, giving us some extra guide time, giving us some merchandise, etc. The extra fishing time would have been super easy to do because, being on the last plane, we weren't scheduled to leave until 1pm the last day anyway (and we ended up leaving even later than scheduled because of more delays). There were boats available and we could have easily fished from 6am to 11am and they still would have had plenty of time to get the boats ready for the next guests. Instead, we were told we could only have a maximum of 2 hours fishing the last day from 6am-8am, which is hardly worth bothering to do given the travel time, setup time, etc. The rest of the time we had to just sit around until our plane left in the afternoon. Honestly, even just sitting down with us and giving a heartfelt apology for the bad circumstances and pledging she would do everything possible to maximize our remaining time would have gone a long way, and that would have cost her nothing. Instead, the owner didn't approach us with anything and immediately shot down every reasonable suggestion. Instead of making reasonable efforts to make our stay better, we got the impression that she couldn't wait for us to leave. Some of the other folks had come to the lodge many times over a number of years and they were all treated the same way from what I could see. No one I spoke with had any interest in coming back, which is a shame because it was so easily avoidable. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is that some of the staff were extremely good and seemed to really care about us having a good experience. They seemed to be aware of how negative our experience was and tried to make up for it. Our fishing guide Michael and the dock guys (Ozzie and Mitch I think were their names) are great examples. It's even more impressive that they had this mentality in that environment. Also on the positive side, the lodge paid for one of my rods that a staff member broke and gave me a letter that I could use to make a claim on trip insurance, which fortunately I had purchased. I have fished in 25 US states and 20 foreign countries. I have never been to a place that was run like this. I have had plenty of trips where fishing was slow, but I have never had a trip so poor that I wished I had never gone until now. In every other instance where fishing was slow, the fishing operators I went with tried to go the extra mile on everything else to help make up for it. In this case, it felt like they did the opposite, which is as baffling as it is upsetting. As I mentioned at the beginning, I wouldn't accept another trip to this place if it was free.

Our weather upon arrival was spectacular. Barbara( the owner) greeted us all with warm welcoming smile. Lodge looked as good as ever. Our first time here was 2019. We had Room #1. Nice room. Gets a lot of sun. This is the first time lodge has re-opened since Covid. Lots of new help and guides. All of them wonderful and extremely helpful, Always attentive to to your needs. We found the equipment just fine. We had a downrigger fail but the crew was immediately there to switch it out. They work as hard as they can when anything fails. The girls in kitchen and housekeeping were unbelievable. Always went above and beyond to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The food was good. Best scalloped potatoes ever. Eggs Benedict for breakfast superb. Fishing was a little tougher this time as the fish had not come in yet. Last day of our stay, it was changing and fish were coming in. The beauty, the people, the fishing make this a place worth returning to. We received great instruction regarding boats, the GPS, down-riggers and tackle. You were always encouraged to ask questions about anything. We will be returning next year for sure.

I was there during the last week of August and I had a wonderful time. Every single person on the staff was courteous and helpful. I had two different guides on my 5-day trip and both were excellent. I have a bad back and they constantly checked to make sure I was okay. I wasn't expecting to catch a lot of fish, but I did, thanks to the guides. They could see how happy I was and we celebrated together. It felt like being on a winning team. But honestly, I was just as happy with the friendly, welcoming atmosphere there. All my fellow fishermen seemed happy too. I took home a lot of fish and a great memory.

This is my third fishing trip to Rivers Inlet, and I can’t wait to go back again! Barb, Simon and Stephanie, and the entire staff were absolutely outstanding, very attentive, and professional. The fishing was fantastic, and the lodging was very nice with daily service. All meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner were delicious with great selections. This is a great place to get away from it all, rejuvenate, and catch fish all day while surrounded by beautiful scenery, whales, and Bald Eagles. Highly recommend …

When short comings popped up, instead of dealing with the problem at hand directly the owner Barbara would change the subject and talk about her business challenges and other happy experiences. Very inconsistent service in guiding, one guide was great, the other was a total disappointment as he was late, chain smoked on the boat without asking us for permission, and had a broken depth finder and client seat. With broken depth finder, as soon as we started fishing both down riggers hooked the bottom and ripped out the down rigger supports off. Had to real up broken downriggers and head back to the lodge for repairs. Instead of jumping into another guide boat that was available, we waited another 1/2 hour while the guide repaired the down riggers. Lost about 2 hours of prime morning fishing that day. Food was poor, no fresh fruit at breakfast. Most meals were cheese and carbohydrate based. Macdonald's has a better breakfast. Most lunches and suppers were average to below average. House keeping was good and friendly. The stinger boat motor had exhaust issues and we had to cope with exhaust fumes in the boat that made us both ill. The motor was in poor operating condition. The dock hand had promised to have the mechanic look at the motor, it was never done. Other boat issues like wrong handed reels and downrigger issues also never got repaired. Speed notification on depth finder not consistent. Issued fishing tackle consisted of rusty hooks and unkept rods. Had to be pro active to get new hooks and hoochie's.

Excellent: Beautiful lodge. Great kitchen staff, dock boys, & guides (3 out of 4 of them. All attending to your needs. 38 fisherman/women in camp. Good camaraderie. Great job cleaning & packing fish. Needs work: Three of us hired a guide for 4 days of fishing. You get a different guide each day so some have better people skills. They only fish 2 rods at a time so depending on agreements with buddies may have a lot of time you're not fishing. Fished for 4 days. My catch 1 huge Halibut 60+ lb. one Coho & one King for the trip. One morning I could not locate my hat & Barb the owner took me to the Gift Shop & gave me one for no charge. Later in the trip, I was accused of taking the hat. Manager S. told me how she knows when things are missing. I explained to S. that Barb the owner had given me the hat & S. said she asked Barb & she said she knew nothing about that. I told her I would pay for the hat but was never charged on my final bill. An apology was never given. Scored lower for this incident & so-so fishing.

I took my Boys on a 5 day trip in July 2022. Their idea of a 5 day trip is 3 full days and 3 hours on the arrival day and 2 hours on departure day. I call that 4 days. First of all the Staff was fine. They are underappreciated by the owners Son and undertrained on the ways that make a trip great. No fault of theirs. Examples: Bring a tub to your boat for your fish and you put the fish in the tub and carry to the cleaning station. Never wash out live well. Both Scotty downriggers failed most days. I had 2 rod failures. Doesn't sound like a lot except only 2 rods in a boat. Meals were good and the Chef worked hard to supply us with a good variety. On our departure, we were pretty much ignored and were offered only soup as we waited hours for the planes. The incoming guests ate a great lunch while we watched through the window. This is my 5th trip to Rivers Inlet and first and lat to this Lodge.

This place is an absolute dream. We arrived on a gorgeous sunny day to Barb (the owner) greeting us on the dock with a hug and smile, an ice cold crisp beer and cheerful staff. The lodge was in full form and looked in great shape considering it was closed for two years because of Covid. The food was incredible and the chef brought out a beautiful dessert for me as I celebrated my birthday on one of the evenings while I was there. It was very thoughtful and considerate. The fishing was fantastic, and our guide was a blast! He had extensive knowledge of the area as he has worked numerous seasons before and was high energy, positive and encouraging. We caught some halibut, coho and ling cod as well as saw a couple humpbacks breaching which was breathtaking. The accomodations were so cozy and the hot water bottle at the end of a long day was a lovely touch. There are so many extra little things that make this place better than the rest. The warm, fresh out of the oven, chocolate chunk cookies before bed. The crowning of the fishing "king or queen" at dinner every evening (crown and gown provided and hilarious) the complimentary drinks upon arrival, hot soup waiting at the end of the dock after a long day of fishing and just the general "above and beyond" attitude of all the staff. I felt very cared for and will definitely be returning next year! Thank you again for such a memorable trip!

Guides and lodge staff were great. Food was average. Boats and equipment sub par out dated and very well used not the experience I was expecting . Got to spend the last day if the trip waiting eight hour on the dock for the plane. No effort made to acomadate guest because of this unforeseen delay no offer to go out fishing while we wait and was told it was due to safety yet they were able to send out other guests. No offer of lunch while we waited not a great last impression
