Andrew is the best for excellent customer service! He facilitated a gift certificate for my family on a special occasion and ensured it was delivered as a surprise! This beautiful resort also has the best restaurant, dinner and breakfasts are amazing, and the lake-view rooms are lovely!

This hotel is as beautiful and inviting as their pictures shown on their website. The room we stayed in was very nice and tastefully decorated. Our stay included a full breakfast. The breakfast was amazing and the restaurant offered amazing views of the lake. The hotel offers many activities to choose including swimming, kayaking, tennis/pickle ball and much more. There is also a cozy little games room/ library for those days that aren’t sunny enough to enjoy the outdoors. The staff throughout the hotel were friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel!

Rather than immediately posting a negative review, I first wrote directly to guest services and the manager to give them a chance to address my concerns. After one week I got no reply from either one so I’m now posting this review. I did try to speak to the manager the day before leaving but, at noon, was told he had left for the day. I had a far from impressive stay at Windermere recently. This is a very expensive place to stay and it will take me a long time to pay it off but I was in desperate need of a vacation and assumed this would be a flawless, relaxing place to stay in a beautiful location. Unfortunately, the standards they promote as “Muskoka’s premiere hotel and resort” were nowhere close to being met. Several others I spoke with while there felt the same way. Upon arrival I asked the people at the front desk what else there was to do in the area and they had absolutely no suggestions. One mentioned there was a restaurant in Rosseau that people liked but he couldn’t remember the name of it. He did seem to be ‘overly promoting’ their Amba Spa – as if he’d been told to try to get people to book an appointment. Often in hotel lobbies there are flyers for local places or activities but I didn’t see any there. There was also no information in the room about the history of Windermere House or any mention of things people might ask about such as the golf course next door or the location of an LCBO or convenience store (both just across the street) or the marina that has ice cream during the day etc. The online menus (because there are no menus in the room) for the restaurant and pub don’t mention desserts at all and one staff member even said the online menu doesn’t match everything that’s actually available because it hasn’t been updated. They are under new owners as of June and most of the staff is brand new but many seemed a little clueless when asked questions and didn’t go out of their way to help. That is with the exception of all the bartenders and servers, who were all great. I understood going in that I was going to be charged a daily resort fee so I can’t object to that. However, this was a frustrating additional expense because as a solo traveller I was not going to be making use of the tennis courts, shuffleboard etc. on my own. However, I knew that fee was mandatory but perhaps it could be discounted for single travellers. The room had a bedside lamp on each side of the bed but there was no overhead, general lighting (other than the entrance hallway) and the work desk had no light. I had to move one of the heavy lamps over to the work desk to be able to read the papers I was working on. There was no coffee table in the room. That might be because the couch was a pull-out but the room was large enough to have been able to move a coffee table out of the way to pull out the bed. That meant there was no table to put food on and watch tv while eating in the room. Or, in the case of more than one person booking that room, no doubt they would want to sit around and talk and have a place to put their drinks and snacks. Surely even a smaller, lighter table could have been provided that could be easily moved. Something needs to be done about the cushions for the balcony seating. It must have rained before I arrived because my cushions were fairly wet – but not wet enough to notice until I sat on them. It absolutely poured all day one day and I could see people had left their cushions out, so they would end up being soaked for them and for the next guests. I realize you can’t necessarily regulate what the guests do with their cushions but perhaps a small Rubbermaid container on the balcony with a note encouraging guests to put cushions into it in the event of rain would work. Or maybe there is better fabric that could be used that is waterproof. We pay extra for a balcony and want the furnishings to be comfortable and usable. The water temperature for the shower was highly variable, requiring dramatic adjustment during the shower. The shower curtain wasn’t long enough. After making sure the curtain was all the way inside the tub, I must have inadvertently elbowed some of it outwards and got out to discover water on the floor. There wasn’t a fan in the bathroom so the steam from the shower set off the alarm in the bedroom for a few minutes. Not very relaxing. I was told the only place for ice is on the basement level. Not the best when you want to just slip down the hall to grab some ice. Utensils seem to be an afterthought. When I ordered a burger at the pub I had to ask for utensils and a napkin. It took about 5 minutes to get them. I wasn’t about to start eating a ‘drippy’ burger without a napkin so it sat there getting cold while I waited. Later, when ordering food at the pub to take back to my room I again had to ask for utensils. It was a salad….I needed a fork. We shouldn’t have to ask. All that being said, the view is beautiful and the breakfast buffet had a lot of variety and was very tasty. The breakfast staff was wonderful. The grounds are well kept. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. Lots of hotels offer those good features at half the price. Windermere needs to up their game. I only gave it three stars instead of two because the view was beautiful and the food was good.

Just lunch ... but what a lunch! We all shared the sushi dishes which were stunning and I'm not a sushi fan ... love tempura though! Service staff were friendly and excellent ... Terek was the best! The location makes for a very special environment. Please don't listen to the negatives go and check it out ... beautiful Ontario at it very best, we are so lucky!

Here's what $746 a night (Lakeview room with balcony including resort fee and tax) gets you at the Windermere House - An under-furnished room with bare walls. A new, comfortable bed. Old furniture, every piece of which had water damaged tops, 2 bottles of water, the type of cheap toilet paper that you'd expect in a gas station washroom, a semi-broken towel rack, a SINGLE bar of soap for the sink and the shower, dust-covered ventilation grille in the washroom and a good sized porch with a ripped, dirty awning and access to a tiny public beach that is owned by the town. Here's what it doesn't get you... 1) helpful front desk staff. When trying to change our dinner reservation, 3 calls to the front desk and 3 calls to the restaurant placed over the course of 45 minutes went unanswered. 2) A cleaned room. We were told that rooms were only cleaned from 3-5 and ours was missed. They offered to call someone in but it would be after 8pm so we declined the offer. 3) First class amenities. In addition to the tiny beach, there is a shallow pool with no shade or umbrellas. A half dozen old board games and a couple of old paperbacks are also available. While the view is wonderful, the way this hotel is run is comically bad. Felt as though the Hotel Manager had taken the weekend off and left the summer students in charge of the place.

Food is average at best, lunch menu is actually a dinner menu. Don’t bring kids! Setting is beautiful and waitress was great. Hopefully the new owners can make a go of it. Would be sad to see someone buy it and turn it into their cottage

We have stayed here two previous summers and unfortunately it has really gone downhill since new management. Our room had a broken bed, cold showers and a broken extractor fan. The internet also did not work, which would be fine if everything else did. The elevator also didn’t work, so we had to haul our buggy down three flights of stairs. When we raised these issues, the staff were mostly not able to make it right. All they offered was a 10% off coupon off the next stay until December, which won’t be possible for us to use. Such a shame as we really enjoyed staying here the previous two years. Extremely expensive to have so many issues.

Well, I have been going to Windemere house for a long time……..and have wrote many reviews and my picture is on there site with my son I phoned to see what’s available ……to find out a number of changes have taken place…Herb the best bartender they had is not there! Second I asked for the food and beverage manager because I have diet needs they were unavailable no call back…..my wife and I will miss herb …oh I also wanted to know if the chef. From the Sutton place was still there? These were all easy questions I did not want to ask for the general manager….I now have second thoughts about going there.

Spent a wonderful evening at Windemere celebrating a good friend's Birthday and it did not disappoint, the food was incredible (particularly the sushi and breakfast buffet) the rooms were spotless and beds were a dream to sleep in. I understand new owners have just taken over and I noticed positive changes had been made already, with more to come. If you want a relaxing beautiful view, friendly staff and a piece of Muskoka history I highly recommend Windermere House!! We will be back again!
