The George and Dragon is a vibrant country inn with a restaurant, bar and 11 bedrooms. Each of the rooms has been individually designed and decorated with comfortable beds and luxury linens. There is a welcoming and relaxing bar, a lovely restaurant serving fresh, seasonal produce from the owner's family estate and kitchen garden at sister establishment nearby Askham Hall. On the edge of the Lake District, it makes a great base for outings in this quiet and secluded part of Cumbria. Dogs, families, walkers and cyclists all welcome.

Detailed Reviews
My family and I visited George and Dragon on the way back from Scotland for my brothers wedding. It was a perfect location to break up the trip and with 2 young kids it was well needed. The hotel is far enough away from the motorway that it doesn't feel like you're sleeping next to a busy road and close enough that you're not travelling miles off route to find it. We had a family room which was super clean and really cosy. My only criticism of the room was that the double bed was a little uncomfortable (the mattress seemed to bow on either side so at points me and my other half were waking up as we almost rolled out of the bed) and being next to the stairs, you could clearly hear people coming up from the pub later in the evening. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the food was top quality and the service was great. Breakfast the next day was also lovely. I'd definitely stay again.

Hi there, thank you for your kind words following your recent stay with us. Yes the George and Dragon is a great stop off of the way north or south, like you say the right distance from the motorway. Sorry to hear that you found the bed to be uncomfortable though and the room a little noisy. Thank you for letting us know about the good service and food which I'll pass on to the team. Hope to see you again soon

We enjoyed two nights at this well run inn just after a further easing of Covid restrictions. The food was excellent with generous portions at both breakfast and in the evening. Charlie's chocolate pot dessert was heaven in a ramekin but all the food was interesting and well presented.
The staff were welcoming, hard working and efficient, always a good sign. Our standard double room at the back was a little tight on space and affected by the background hum of the extractor fans used in the kitchen. However, we knew this when booking and this kit has to go somewhere in a building of this type and age. It didn't affect our overall impression of the place and the fans turned off at a reasonable time.
Only one complaint: they run out of delicious Hawkshead bitter on our second day! Can't remember what I had instead but it was pretty good. Well done George and Dragon, happy to recommend and stay again.

Stayed here for one night during a business trip. The room was very nice and spotlessly clean but it did not have a desk which I normally like to do my work, but sliding that to one side, the food is something else. Because I have a "very limited" amount on my works credit card I decided to go for the battered fish and let me tell you, I have never had "fish and chips" like it, the meal was superb and looking around at the other guests food (as you have to do) it all looked wonderful, so much so that I will be bringing my wife here all the way from Nottingham one day. Well worth a visit/stay/meal.

I've just returned from spending last night at this wonderful pub that offers blooming good fine dining food. We spent the afternoon in the lovely cosy and atmospheric bar being looked after by the wonderful Mike. Thanks for the gin recommendation, it was delicious.
We had dinner in the restaurant, which I've reviewed separately. Couldn't have been better.
The room was perfectly comfortable, robes, slippers, fluffy towels, spotlessly clean, lush bedding and soft pillows.
The breakfast was also great but I would have liked a sweet option, maybe waffles with fruit. That's just personal taste though, what I ate was wonderful.
I'm literally going to book again for a couple of weeks time, I can't wait to go back!!

Just had a splendid couple of nights at this excellent pub for my birthday weekend.
We were the only guests and they upgraded our room - which was very much appreciated. The room was lovely. Spacious, comfortable and a great bathroom. The bar area is lovely, but couldn’t spend time there due to current restrictions.
Food - outstanding! Every aspect of the food was excellent! The meat is sublime and I just loved their cheese soufflé. Had it as a starter both nights. Breakfasts were also excellent. Just the quality of the produce used shone through with everything we had.
Beer - only one real ale in at the current time due to current restrictions affecting number of customers I suspect, but Hawkshead Bitter was served very well indeed and it’s a nice pint! The rose and red wines we had were really nice too.
Best thing of all about this place is the staff. Every me ever of staff, without fail, was excellent! Customer service is really well done here.
This place deserves support in the current times. We’ll be back very soon. Thanks guys for a really nice stay!!

Easily accessible from the M6, the George and Dragon is ideally located if you need to break a journey in the area.
Our room was tastefully decorated and the bed was very comfortable. Despite being on the A6 we weren't disturbed by traffic and had a good night's sleep.
A few small niggles - although a hair dryer was provided we couldn't find an accessible socket near a mirror. The bathroom was spacious, felt very new and had a lovely big walk in shower. It was a bit "form over function," though. There was no surface on which to put anything in the bathroom other than a small glass shelf over the washbasin (which held the hand wash) so we had to use the floor. The controls for the overhead shower were at the back of the cubicle so it was hard to avoid a brief cold shower when turning it on. A shower cap would have been very useful. I don't think it's too much to expect when luxury items such as bathrobes and slippers are included!
The refurbished bar is a comfortable place to sit for a drink but only serves wine in 125ml or 250ml glasses. We've only come across this in a small number of places and find the practice very annoying. It seems to be a way to make more money as I guess most people will opt for the larger measure. This is more acceptable in the restaurant, especially as there is a good choice of wine by the glass. The 250ml is served in a carafe which offers more flexibility for sharing if you like to choose wines to suit different courses.
The menu in the busy restaurant is very flexible with starters labelled as "small plates." They are quite happy for people to order a couple of small plates rather than a main course which is great for the smaller appetite. I really enjoyed the cheese soufflé but the soft shelled crab was disappointing - so heavily battered it was hard to find the crab inside. My husband ordered the venison pie which was good but he didn't realise it was a potato topped pie and ordered a side of chips. Fortunately the waitress was happy to take the chips back.
Overall, a fairly pleasant experience but we would probably try somewhere different if we need to stop in the area again.

We booked dinner at the restaurant because the reviews looked good and the sample winter menu looked nice. When we got there the actual menu was very different to the sample menu. We ordered the pasta which was awful. Over cooked and the sauce was non existent, it was like a big dry slop. We sent this back and ordered the bean burger which was better but not great.
We weren't offered a discount and the bill came to £65. Would not go back based on the poor quality food and were actually offended by the pasta dish. Please avoid at all costs.

Can I start by saying the breakfast offering her is as good as it gets?
We also tipped the amazing staff accordingly.
Sitting literally adjacent to the site of the last ever battle on English ground, this pretty but unremarkable 18th c pub leans into the owners [well, of everything around there, the Lowthers], instead of any connection to its place.
Decorations, accordingly, were the offcuts of attic picture clearances. Even in the bedrooms? In the most beautiful part of England?
Restaurant food & staff were a joy. But how can they support renting for guests over multiple days without a single menu change? Not one. and only red meat. Not a single chicken dish.
My room, the Lowther, was well set up. I slept well. Nice bed [two doubles pushed together, so a bit of angling]. Very clean and the bathroom was pristine.
I left relaxed, but wholly tired of the Earls of Lonsdale. This review is about good staff, not a great product. This is not a luxe property, no matter how it is marketed.

Really positioned whether you are heading north or south on the M6. Room was large clean and comfortable. Good value for money with friendly staff who made us very welcome. The staff really made the stay.
Dinner and breakfast were delicious, particularly breakfast.
Our room had the kitchen extractor fan outside it, but it really didn’t disturb our night at all. What we did have was a very large, really comfortable bed.
