Detailed Reviews
I decided that 2020 was going to be the year I explore more of the UK, and having a dog, I need places that are dog-friendly. Never having been to the Lake District, I opted for The White House Guest House as it was recommended by a friend. It was a great choice! Easy to find just off the motorway, with parking, and dog friendly. We were greeted by the owner and immediately made to feel comfortable, with doggie treats and water included. The guest house is spacious, very clean, and comfortable. My room had a great view, the bed was super comfortable and it was very quiet. The guest lounge is cosy and comfortable with books, games, and a microwave for guests to use. A fire for colder nights, comfortable sofas, and a dining table. Breakfast was included, and good, with my coffee waiting for me at the requested time. The owners were friendly and informative, recommending the pub just a few minutes walk away for dinner (also dog friendly) and places to explore / walk the next day. I would certainly go back again, and for longer next time. A great base from which to explore the Lake District, and very welcoming.

I could not believe my luck when I found this B&B which could legally offer accommodation for one guest, even in the shutdown. Prue and her dogs live there all the year round. Everything was perfect. The bed, bathroom, breakfast, banter and even the weather combined to make an easy comfortable overnight stay. The one niggle was the noise of the M6 close by, but it was not enough to be a nuisance..

We stayed here on the way back from a motorcycle tour of the Scottish Highlands in June 2021. First off, Prue is a lovely lady and incredibly helpful and accommodating. Having been riding all day we were tired and so, having offloaded our luggage, we popped into town to get takeaway food. When we returned, Prue had put out plates, cutlery and glasses in the library for us.
There is tarmacked off road parking, essential on a bike, and Prue also offered the use of the garage to put our bikes in for the night.
I opted for the single room with separate bathroom and I will say that the bedroom is a little on the small side, especially with loads of biking gear. That said the bed was comfortable. Having a separate bathroom wasn't an issue for me, but there is no shower, which I realise would be difficult given the layout of the room. It's been many years since I last had a bath so that was an interesting experience. Both the bedroom and bathroom were very clean.
Breakfast was served in the dining room and was first class. Prue only uses quality ingredients and it certainly shows in the standard of her breakfast.
Despite the fact that the single room is a little small, I enjoyed my stay and would certainly stay there again. 10/10

Lovely old house but with good modern amenities. Lovely comfy beds. Most rooms are en suite and the other one (single) has a private bathroom with a REAL bath as well as a shower. There is a lovely lounge to sit and relax in, with a good selection of books to borrow. In the summer it is great to sit out in the garden. Take your own wine and Prue will lend you the glasses. Plenty of grass on hand for exercising your dog plus there is a good walk in amongst woodland, just behind the property. The breakfast is great. I have never known such a helpful and friendly landlady. Prue goes out of her way to welcome you. There are a number of places to eat in the area. The George and Dragon is in the village just down the road and is dog friendly, though you need to tell them when you book. There is a great Sunday carvery in Eamont Bridge (Crown Inn) also dog friendly, that during the week offers Thai food. Around the area are other good eateries but if you are looking for cheap and cheerful there are takeaways and pubs like Wetherspoon in Penrith itself, just a few miles up the road. Its only 15 mins to Pooley Bridge and Ullswater. I intend going again....and again....and again.

We have just had a 4 night family break at The White House and all had a really lovely relaxing stay. Prue is so welcoming and helpful and made us all feel very comfortable - especially as the weather sometimes restricted us getting out and about we felt we could still relax at the guesthouse and enjoyed playing games. The breakfasts were delicious too and accommodated all our dietary requirements! Thank you so much Prue, we definitely hope to come back before too long!

Great place! Spacious and clean rooms, great breakfast, quiet location and pet friendly! What more can you ask for? The new owner goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable. You feel totally at home ( and it helps when the Lake District throws some bad weather at you...). Will come back in the summer to enjoy the area!

We stayed here on the way back from a short tour of Scotland, and were really impressed by this lovely cottage and it’s ideal location close to the lakes. The room was beautiful with bay windows overlooking the lovely gardens and fields beyond. Prue was a wonderful host who couldn’t do enough to help and breakfast was superb! Shame we arrived too late to enjoy cocktails in the garden bar but will definitely book again! Would recommend!

The White House is in a quiet village close to Penrith and only a few miles off the M1. It is ideally situated for access to the Lake District, especially the North Lakes. The owner, Pru, is very friendly and welcoming. This large, converted cottage is full of character and the rooms are comfortable. The breakfast is excellent and uses first class, local produce. The local George & Dragon is a short walk away, is part of the Lowther Estate (Castle nearby) and serves wonderful food. We will come back here whenever we revisit the Lakes.

We actually stayed Dec 2021 but better late then never and I am heading back to stay Jan 2023. We stayed with Prue for 1 night en-route to Glasgow for Christmas and stayed in the family room so 4 plus our Cockapoo ! Prue was very helpful and accommodating and there is a very homely feel about the house despite its size. We slept very well and had a lovely breakfast the next morning with the other friendly guests. Highly recommended and it will be my stop off for ever more ! There are some lovely walks locally and almost opposite is the Jacobean resting place of some of Bonnie Prince’s men prior to Culloden moor in Scotland.
