Over the years I've found that small town Italia always held for me, the more memorable moments. Castelcivita and particularly B&B Castello did not disappoint. Castelcivita is a medieval town nestled on the southern slopes of the Alburni Mountains, with a commanding view of part of the Calore river valley.
The town was easy to find and so was the B&B. I do not recommend driving directly to the B&B since the road narrows considerably after leaving the piazza. Either park in the Piazza and walk, or call them to show you where to park.
B&B Castello is in an old Castle turned into a residence. It was once a part of the towns defensive walls. It doesnt look like much from the alley, just one big wooden door with a smaller pedestrian door built into it. Once inside it opens up onto a terrace with that magnificent view! Sometimes you take a gamble and it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. B&B Al Castello was a gamble that definitely did pay off.
We were looking for a town about half way between Tivoli and Tropea. I had a few places marked and began a bit of research. It would only be a 1 night stop so it wasn't that crucial as to what we got, as long as it was clean & comfortable. I found Castelcivita to be about the right distance for our stop. A bit of Trip Advisor research found B&B Al Castello to be the only accommodation in the town, and the 4 reviews were all in Italian!!! After some translation work, the place sounded like it would work for us. It turns out we were the first Australians to stay here !!!
Through email we were advised to drive to the piazza and call for them to come and guide us in. Angela showed up and led us to our parking spot and then a brief walk to their front gate/large wooden castle door. Once through we were shown into the guest area. This place is...
