Veenhuizen is a lovely town, with a very interesting history. In the early 19th century, a reform housing colony for the poor and homeless was established here. In the late 19th century, the complex was turned into a penal colony. In the middle of this complex 3 original houses have been converted to a hotel/restaurant, adding modern elements to it....

What a fantastic experience and delightful surroundings. A small hotel close to the Assen Cathedral TT with an interesting history, set in a post prison village King size bed, large bathroom with double bath and shower. Then the main event - dinner. Food outstanding and outclassed a 5 star country manor close to home Staff were most helpful and pleased...

I was recovering from an operation during my stay at the hotel. The staff were outstanding, going above and beyond expectations to ensure I was as comfortable as possible. From the kitchen staff, to reception, housekeeping and bar staff, everyone was amazing, personable, friendly as well as professional. My room was kept extremely clean and comfortable, the food and service...

And now for something completely different! The old prison village now is a place to relax! Great hotel, great food, the lobby lacks a bit in atmosphere bit the restaurant is fine. Great to walk around and stay a night. Dinner was fine as was breakfast. 30's style with modern coating.

If you like a special spot in the North of Holland in a beautifull environment where you can rest well in the big clean quiet rooms, have very good sustainable food, nice and helpfull staff, accept basic luxury (enough but no nonsense) in an architectonically well modernised historic building...? Just go there.

We had an apartment at the former hospital. Equipped with basic bathroom facilities, a small but fully functional kitchen and two beds - but as it was a former ward, the room was huge, very big. Good beds, breakfast okay, not too special. Friendly staff.

The pittoresk village of Veenhuizen is absolutely worthwile a visit. Started as 'recorrection unit' early 1900's and later transformed to a prison village, located in a beautifull nature surrounding. The buildings are all of the same area, so architecture is consisent and preserverd in this 'to become' Unesco Site. The hotel is located in the former hospital buildings and connected...

For nearly two ages Veenhuizen was a far away place to be re-socialised or to be prisoned. As you can see in the Museum or by reading books. Nowadays you can recover from your daily life as a free burgher. Free from the prison you call home or work. in Bitter en Zoet you find a room in the old...

We had a business meeting (couple of days in the green with a team) at Bitter en Zoet. It is a converted former prison hospital and three houses belonging to senior staff of that hospital, the conversion is very tastefully done by a glass construction connecting the three houses. Venue is very suited for days in the green, quiet in...

“Rooms are classed per comfort level. We had the best deal 'comfort class' which resulted in an attic room with very comfortable double bed, a nice bathroom and great views on the adjecent nature. However 3 narrow stairs to walk and internet access was painfully slow.”
