Hotel Per La, Autograph Collection, earns accolades for its harmonious blend of historic charm and contemporary elegance, with guests often praising the tasteful decor and cleanliness of the space. The rooftop pool and dining options are popular among travelers, though some find the rooms on the smaller side and mention occasional service inconsistencies. Its prime location is well-regarded for safety and convenience, yet opinions on the hotel's overall value vary due to mandatory fees.

Hands down the most elegant and visually exciting hotel I've experienced in the U.S.A. From the 1923 architecture and flawless restoration, to the beautiful designs, colors, furnishings - the perfect balance of old world luxury and new world hip. The dining room is spectacular; had the best avocado toast ever with charming service. Be sure to stroll the mezzanine above the dining room. And all those authentic Fortuny lamps!! Our room on the 11th floor was small but flawlessly designed, the king bed with the finest white sheets and dreamy mattress, big thick white towels, marble bathroom with brass fittings - even the hotel-provided lotion was made from Argan oil from Italy. Plus, a fab rooftop pool heated to 84 degrees surrounded by chaise lounges; order cocktails and snacks as you bask in the sun. Skip the 'Hollywood' hotels and hightail it down to Olive and 7th for the very best!

We stayed one night at Hotel Per La, selecting the location for its proximity to Union Station where we were boarding an Amtrak train the next morning. We found it incredibly stylish and enjoyed the decor in our room as well as in the lounge and main areas of the hotel. The character and architectural details of the original bank building have been retained in a number of areas, and the craftsmanship that went into the original construction is incredible. Modern Italian design touches liven things up.
Our room with two queen beds was very spacious and had loads of light from large windows with downtown views. It was furnished with interesting antique/retro-ish furniture and wall art, and extremely comfortable beds. The room was very quiet considering the location and the windows had double coverings that allowed you to shut out light if you wished. The bathroom was very bright and attractive, with a huge walk-in shower with lots of water pressure; the sink for some reason had much less pressure. Great terry dressing gowns and loads of fluffy towels were provided.
The doormen gave us a great initial welcome when we arrived, helpfully pointing out a place we could park for free very close to the hotel, when we told them we were leaving early in the morning. Front desk staff were also very pleasant and when we were interested in some of the design aspects of the building, guided us to the basement to show us the original bank vault and safety deposit boxes still in place (with the area repurposed as a vestibule to the washrooms!).
There are many slightly quirky (in a good way!) design elements that make you stop to take a closer look. Dramatic dark wall colours bring style to hallways and elevator lobbies.
We enjoyed themed cocktails in the bar/lounge area, which is a beautiful blend of old and new design, again with Italian touches such as the Venetian arches over the bar. It was a very comfortable place to relax and chat.
We were too late for swimming in the rooftop pool but enjoyed seeing it at night and it would have been a lovely space to spend some time in the day or evening.
The only issue we had was trying to figure out where to park, to check in and unload our luggage when we arrived, as we couldn't see any sign for the hotel and the entrance door wasn't very well marked. We arrived after dark so possibly this wouldn't have been a problem in daylight hours.
I would definitely stay here again in future if an opportunity arises, as I found the property really interesting and very comfortable.

Good location, depending on your needs. Very walkable to DTLA. Beautiful hotel, friendly staff, comfortable room.

We checked in early (around 11a) and they were able to hold our bags for us. We actually got a call around 11:45 that our room was ready!

No need to pay for valet as nearby (safe) garages are $8/day (at least on weekends). Check spothero.com

$35 hotel amenities fee can be used as a credit towards restaurants. But when we went to the bar on Sat night, it was closed early for "holiday hours." When we went to the cafe on Sunday morning, it was also closed. So we used our credit at the overpriced restaurant. The server said they didn't offer tea, but then I saw other customers drinking tea. Language barrier? Also slow service since busy (presumably everyone trying to get some value from their credit). We managed to stay under the $35 so breakfast was about $7 (we had to pay tax and tip).

Don’t stay here unless you have to. If you want to see its cool features (e.g. vault, pool, mirror hall), just come for lunch or dinner and look around. The restaurant is pretty good. To stay here is like staying at a clean version of a roadside motel.

Facilities: (1) The “old fashioned” faucet over the bathroom sink gives you either cold or scalding hot water. (2) The bedside tables are very small: hardly any space for your personal items. Only one side had working outlets. (3) There is no outlet near the only table in the room: your only choice is to unplug the lamp.

Courtyard: I booked the “Patio Salon” that features “a private patio with lush garden views…” (the feature photo of the hotel on this site). There is nothing private about the patio: it is courtyard you share with all the rooms around it that sits at the bottom of a well surrounded on all sides by 10 stories of concrete. In the morning scent of smoke and marijuana wafted into my room from smokers in that courtyard (security was quick to come once reported), and in the evening party noises echoed loudly until 1am, even on week nights.

Dining/Sustainability: (1) Restaurant and bar close at 10pm, and room service stops at 11pm, after which your only option is the minibar, which is pathetically stocked. There is really no convenience store that you’d want to walk to late at night nearby. (2) Plastic town: poolside dining offers only four pre-made cold items in plastic boxes. When you do get in-room dining, it is also delivered in plastic boxes. If this was a roadside motel, I would not expect more, but the price and advertising are not roadside motel.

Service: This was perhaps the worst of all. Days before my arrival, I specifically requested the removal of down comforters and pillows from my bed, and had emails confirming they agreed to do that. When I arrived at nearly midnight, I found down comforter and pillows on my bed. The poor night receptionist had to go to housekeeping to find extra sheets and foam pillow (and no one was at the reception desk when he did that because he was the only worker). He told me he could see the notation in the record of my request, and assured me someone from management would contact me to apologize the next day. No one did. When I wrote to the front desk, the front desk manager claimed she “attempted to call” me during the day. When I asked what time, she gave me a time when I was in fact I the room on a Zoom meeting, and know for a fact the phone did not ring. She could also have contacted me through email or even a written note. Not apologizing is one thing: telling tales is quite another.

I love this establishment. I have come many times for brunch, and to grab a drink to watch sunset. Choosing to spend the night had some let downs. Strong chemical detergent smells on the bedding almost unbearable. Single use cheap toiletries to wash with. I requested a room with 2 beds and it would have been $200 more than booking price, unusual price jump that is normally a lesser valued option in hotels. Pool bar didn't really have any vegetarian options to eat.
The ambiance, the art, the amenities are all top notch, but it seems like for this price, the hotel could do these small things to accommodate their patrons. Full size quality shp/cond, non toxic detergent for linens, vegetarian options at the pool. I believe in you.

Dear Jtee777, Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share the feedback you have. It is through guest feedback that we can provide the experience we wish to deliver to all of our guests. I am so glad to hear you enjoy coming to Bar Clara and Ristorante Per Lora to dine with us, but I am saddened to hear your room experience did not deliver the same. In September of this year, we transitioned to an Autograph Collection by Marriott, and this changed a lot of the in-room amenities you are referring to. At this time our property only offers rooms with 2 queen beds in a studio suite. This is not a standard room with 2 queen beds, it is a much larger suite. Please know this is the reason for the updated pricing. I have shared your feedback with our GM of Bar Clara and Executive Chef to ensure our menus are properly set up to accommodate a variety of dietary needs.   Again, I want to take the time to thank you for sharing the feedback you have with us. We sincerely apologize for not delivering on the experience we pride ourselves on. We hope that when your travel returns you to the Los Angeles area you will give us another opportunity to earn your loyalty. Skylar Gustavson Assistant Director of Front Office

Stayed here on a business trip. Got in late at 10:45pm on a Sunday.

My cabbie told me this used to be a NoMad Hotel. It’s a historic and beautiful building.

The room is great. Nice bed. Big room. Older building that’s been renovated to something very nice. Temperature in the room is perfect.

Less than stellar checkin process. No real acknowledgment of being Bonvoy Platinum. The restaurant (the entire ground floor) is closed for the next two days. Wasn’t really told what to do about meals - guess you can order room service.

The hotel also doesn’t call out the $35 destination charge that lets you buy coffees, etc (since that is all that was open). Weirdly enough you can’t use this on the day of checkout - odd because if there is no breakfast, you have a $35 credit to spend that you can only really use at the coffee shop, it would make sense to use it the morning of the checkout. Ho hum.

I complained about this to them and the manager was very kind about it. So A+ for service after a less than stellar checkin process.

One small caveat. The rooms face across each other in a courtyard so if your room is lit up and the blinds aren’t down, it is very easy for someone to look in. I caught two in a bed sleeping just as I was about to sleep. Nothing bad but you’re def living in a fishbowl.

Dear hmkanji, Thank you for selecting Hotel Per La on your trip from the UK. I am thrilled to know you made us your DTLA hotel of choice. However, I also recognize there were some opportunities to improve on the deliverables. Please know guest satisfaction is a priority and we will use each opportunity as a learning and teaching moment. We want to always improve for our future guests. Please accept our apology for not providing your Elite Recognition. We appreciate your business and value you as a loyal customer to the brand. If the main restaurant is closed for a private event, we also offer a casual dining solution on the rooftop from 12n-10pm as well as our in-room dining solution for breakfast from 7am-11am and all day dining from 4pm-11pm. Please accept our apology if this was not properly communicated. Concerning our daily destination fee of $35 and your daily $35 food and beverage credit. Yes, it is a nightly fee, charged on the same evening of your room/tax. This is the reason for it not carrying over to the next day. However, if one arrives at 10:45pm - 11pm at night when the outlets and in-room dining is closing, there should be no hesitancy in approving use for the following day. I'm glad to know a manager was able to take care of this for you. Our guestrooms offer two views, city view and courtyard view, it reads as you were in a courtyard view room. I must say, I have not had a guest speak to me on your example. However, I can see the possibility. Most guests have their shades drawn in the evening or 3/4 down, so one would not be able to see across. Thank you for bringing to our attention. We will definitely revisit this "caveat". Thank you again for your detailed narrative of your hotel stay. If your travels return you to Los Angeles in the near future, We welcome the opportunity to service you again. Sincerely, Adrienne Interim General Manager

This is definitely my new favourite LA hotel. Rooms were beautiful (mine was on 2nd floor with the entire glass window covered by the treetop outside), bathroom was spacious and clean (I always love it when toilet and bathroom are separated from each other). There was some noise issues as I was on 2nd floor near to a road (esp when a beeping garbage truck woke me up at 6am) but honestly, I don’t mind slight white noise in rooms. The aesthetics and beauty of my room easily made up for the noise. They also provided complimentary $35 dining discount per day which was totally worth it. Hotel was close to some of the downtown attractions like the GCM and the Last Bookstore, and all the dining locations too (loved the Perch). Check in by Fahima was very nice and courteous.

When we were not happy with our initial room, the manager went out of his way to ensure that we were allocated a room that we were happy with. The room was beautiful and this significantly enhanced the quality of our stay. The pillows and mattress were extremely comfortable, the rooms were very clean and guaranteed a restful nights sleep every night.

I cannot fault the management of this hotel. I was made to feel that the guest experience is very important to the management. An example of this is when the engineering team had to check something in our bathroom, we were offered a complementary lunch on the rooftop for the inconvenience. This was very much appreciated, and made us feel like valued guests.

Housekeeping was excellent and to a very high standard.

The downtown location meant that there were a lot of homeless people in neighbouring areas, but this just made the hotel feel like an oasis.

I would stay at this hotel again and would highly recommend, 5/5 stars for sure.

What else can I say other than the money they spend on marketing should be spent in clean bedsheets, friendlier management and proper health guidelines. As far as I can see there’s an investigation in room 507, Probably the whole management team now too, but catch them blaming the sanitation team and saying “human mistakes happen” and refusing to apologize and having a subordinate apologize instead. Save your energy, the vibes are fake and not safe.

Such a bummer of an experience. Was in a street facing room on the 2nd floor and could hear EVERYTHING all night long. Busses, people, car music. it was so disruptive. The concierge team couldn't help me with any restaurants. They had never even heard of 3/4 that I asked about which are total buzzy new spots. No free water. Just give your guests a free bottle of water for god's sake. There was a show filming so the restaurant was closed, front desk told me I could get the full menu upstairs at the rooftop restaurant. Got there and it was a drastically reduced menu. Blow dryer wouldn't work in any of the outlets in the room. Total bust. Wouldn't recommend.

Los Angeles and San Francisco unfortunately have a high population of homelessness. However, the hotel is in Downtown Los Angeles, which is rapidly gentrifying. Listen, if you are visiting a major city, homelessness is part of the experience. That said, the hotel is gorgeous and we felt safe and unbothered. Hotel security is tight & the rooftop pool is an oasis.
