Detailed Reviews
Loved the campground itself, spacious sites, exceptionally clean... the only campground I've been to in 3 years of frequent camping where the sites were raked and the roads blown clean.... Lovely area, lots of woods.... Pat and her dog Pumpkin were wonderful, exceedingly friendly and ready to help... never been to a campsite where the host will deliver wood to you! Didn't need it myself (always bring my own) but still, how handy is that.
However.... if you're looking for "away from it all" type camping this might not rate, it really seems to be more of an "on your way to somewhere else" campground than a destination in and of itself. It's very close to the main road highway 20, and even the sites farthest away from the road will hear every passing truck and motorcycle.
Also the campground itself doesn't offer much in the way of activities... there's some hiking, but again the trails follow the road so there's no seclusion or feeling of really being alone with nature, not to mention the trails are all mountain-bike and horse friendly so you're stuck with the racket that way too. The site is located near Scott's Lake, so if you're kayaking, powerboating, fishing etc. this would be a great base camp... but if you're going to the campground for the sake of the campground it's not all that great.

First time we stayed at the campground due to the fact that Scott's Flat Campground was full. The sites are quite large. They even have a handicap site, which we have never seen before. One loop of sites is large enough to accommodate RVs.
Pat is very attentive, and very friendly.
Only problem we experienced was the sheer number of meat bees (yellow jackets). I am severely allergic to bee bites and stings, so I had to be very careful while camping. California Land Management really needs to provide the host with traps. She has spray, but the spray only goes so far.
I would stay at this campground again, even though it is quite removed from where we sail

It was our first visit to White Cloud and we made reservations and found out when we arrived that it never fills up, so their is no need to make reservations. We loved the size of the sites. If you go pick a site farthest away from route 20, because you do hear cars all day and night. The only disadvantage is the yellow jackets. They bothered us while we ate at night and in the morning. The drive to Scott's Flat Lake is 6 miles and the lake is big with boat rentals. Take a shower their it is 25 cents for 3 minutes. If we go back it would be when the weather is cooler to avoid the yellow jackets. The camp host are very nice and friendly. Get place for the kids to play, with lots of room. The hiking is nice and flat. You can hike by the campground or hike at Scott's Flat around the lake. Both places are nice.

Right off of Highway 20, on the way to Truckee from Nevada City, CA, one can find the quiet campground of White Cloud. Part of the US National Forest Service system, White Cloud has few amenities compared to State and National Park campgrounds: no showers, no electricity, minimal bathrooms (no sinks), and few activities. And yet, the campsite charge is as high as any State Park ($20 + $9 reservation fee). Beside biking along the fire road, White Cloud is rather dull. The setting among the trees is peaceful, but it's close (100-200 yrds) to Hwy 20 -- so one can hear cars zooming by till late at night. The campsites themselves are given generous space and during peak summer (July 2007) there were only 5 camp sites filled among the 45 total sites, but White Cloud feels more like a sleepy waystation on the road to somewhere else -- rather than a really nice place to stay. We drove from White Cloud to a nearby lake, Scotts Flat Lake, and drove about 15 mins to the Washington crossing of the Yuba River. All very nice... but we had to suffer intense mosquito bombardment, from 7pm to 10 am, while at White Cloud campground. Can't recommend this campground, frankly.

White Cloud campground is great. My friends and I camped (tents) and had an enjoyable stay. White Cloud is close to the town of Washington and the river, and close to many hiking trails which makes it nice. We took a drive to Malakoff Diggins from the campground and it was a great short drive. I will definitely go back there again. Thanks Pat (the campground hostess) for making our stay so enjoyable!

We love White Cloud campground. Love the spacious area and the friendly people.
It is well taken care of with clean bathrooms.
We Like that it is rarely full of people, so you can really feel like your camping instead of in a crowded neighborhood. I have very good hearing and hardly ever notice the traffic on hwy 20. we have been many times and enjoy it very much. Our whole family is going again this weekend and we will be able to get three spaces without even making reservations.

Our 8 '08 experience at White Cloud Campground is similar to the other review posted in 2007.
The plus side of the location is: easy drive to Nevada City, Grass Valley, Truckee & all Historic Gold Country interests. Mountain biking, hiking, ...., horse camps & riding trails, boating, general outdoor recreation is readily available in Nevada County.
No need to beat a dead horse but the use fee structure is high end.
Auto (& low use truck) traffic on Hwy 20 (camp entrance access) is modest during daily commute (6AM to 8PM) hence the traffic noise resonates in camp at certain times.
Flushing toilet bathrooms are provided. Water bib outside of bathroom building. Cleaning & maintenance periods are unknown. Plus side: CA Forest Service Ranger & Fire Station near entrance

I made a reservation here through the website. When I arrived I found that the water was contaminated so no water available, the restrooms were closed and there was a plague warning. Besides the inconvenience of having to drive back to town to get water, I was concerned about the plague issues since I was traveling with a dog. The campsites are right next to the highway, every truck that went by could be heard and felt. I made the decision not to stay given the conditions. The website does not really allow for refunds or cancellations, they charge you fees to cancel and a service charge that would have ended up with me owing more money instead of getting a refund. I wouldn't recommend or stay here. I also will never use the reservation system unless I was absolutely sure of conditions or willing to toss the money away if I couldn't stay.

Shaded and spacious campsites, just off CA 20. 2 BIG drawbacks: the water was labeled "Non potable" (non drinkable). And the explanations were not also listed at all of the faucets. Based on their info seen on one of the faucets, we did decide to drink and use the water, with no ill effects. However, they should have provided this info at ALL faucets. If the park host had been on the property (wednesday and Thursday) perhaps she could have provided further info. She was nowhere to be found until Thursday night.Three of the four bathrooms near our site were closed. People from other areas of the park had to trek to the one near us. It made for hectic mornings. But, the sites themselves were a good value.
