Property rooms have been updated.
Excellent access to Norton Simon Museum and Huntington and Angeles Crest Hwy.

The Comfort Inn Pasadena was clean, comfortable, and affordable. We were pleased with the location as well...near Old Town Pasadena. Our son lives in South Pasadena, and this was our first visit to the LA area. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel as a medium priced and clean place to stay when in Pasadena. The continental breakfast included in the cost of the room was an added benefit as well.

This motel is situated on Colorado Blvd. (Historic Route 66) along a tree lined portion that probably dates back to the 50’s and 60’s or before. Colorado Blvd is deserted during late night except for an occasional person walking the avenue. Prior to my stay, I checked the online crime map for documented incidents, and nothing shows up in the entire area, at least since the beginning of 2013. So I felt confident to book a reservation. If you do plan on walking at night, walk towards Sierra Madre Blvd. Altadena Ave. is very dark, particularly towards the north.

Motel

My initial concern was the open design of this motel where all rooms are accessible from the street; an architecture reminiscent of that era. After checking in, I noticed that several closed circuit cameras were installed in several locations and the parking area was well lit at night. Parking area is designed for compact cars and may not accommodate all guests when fully booked. Several full size cars took several feet from an adjacent space. There were compact cars that were improperly parked and also took up two spaces.

Outside of the front lobby are the Stars and Stripes, California Bear, and the Comfort Inn flags, all at equal heights. It’s good to see a business fly the US flag, but the Stars and Stripes should be flown above the California State flag and both should be above the Comfort Inn flag. It was just my observation and opinion.

The pool and hot tub appear well maintained and situated at the back of the motel. Both soda and ice machines also are at the back of the motel adjacent to the pool and elevator.

Breakfast area is small, but with a good selection and opened on time at 0600 hours.

Room

We were in a corner 3rd floor room and very quiet at night. When I first went in the room, there was an indescribable odor, possibly disinfectant or something from the 50’s. The room has the following amenities: microwave, large refrigerator, hair dryer, wall mounted flat screen TV, stand alone safe, and wireless and wired internet access. Toiletries and towels were the same as in other Comfort Inn and Suites.

First off, it is not "near Pasadena Civic Auditorium". I grew up in Pasadena and it is miles away. It is not cheap and not worth it. The tub is not usable as a bathtub, only as a shower. The pool is cold, which is par for the course in lower-class accommodation because heating the water was cheaper when it was built. The guest laundry and vending machines are in the pool area and it is locked in the evening.

This is now Hyland Inn and the worst room I’ve ever over paid for. Mismatched furniture, no closet, skimpy thin towels, no towel bar to hang a towel on, not even a hook. It had a broken hair dryer that could not be fixed or replaced during our stay. No tissues in the room- had to ask for shampoo- I have nothing positive to say and actually tried to get a refund or some compensation for this miserable room.

a terrible place.
the information of our booking is totally wrong, and the staff refused to give any help to check with the agent, even call the manager! but just asked us to pay extra money for the room.
meanwhile, guests kept complaining about the conditions of the rooms.
finally, the manager called and told us that there was no more double bed room for us (probably we refused to pay the extra)!
this is the truth

After a fine stay there in December, charged to our Master Card, we were billed on our CC a second time for a stay in March that we did not make. We don't live in that area and haven't been there since early December. Manager (de la Cruz) stone-walled, saying that we were registered and that the charge would hold. Evidently an employee gave a friend or family member a free night at our expense; we haven't stayed anywhere else in that area. Don't care much about the loss of that money but the Credit Card now has to be replaced, which is an inconvenience, to say the least. So, reader, take care. jimbo

Here are some pictures of their newly updated rooms (as of November 2012). The bedding and pillows are new. The updates to all rooms are happening in waves, and to be completed soon. Looks much better than before.

My wife and I and 2 kids (aged 4 1/2 and 12 mos) stayed 4 days and were very happy. They have a breakfast room with a large selection of frozen waffles and pancakes, hard-boiled eggs, cereal, juices, muffins, and other things. The kids could eat all they wanted and be rowdy without bothering restaurant patrons. The room was clean. Thre was a large selection of free videotapes to borrow (although most were very old). The TV didn't get very many channels - it seemed like they had satellite, but it was very limited; I couldn't even find PBS. The drive to the main part of Pasadena was very short, and it was easy to get to may places in LA.

Very clean, well kept. Front desk was helpful & friendly. Bus route to Old Town Pasadena goes right in front of hotel on Colorado. We were very pleased with our stay. Will stay there again during our next trip to LA.

Metro is a good mile away and the 181 bus is rerouted on Rose Parade/Bowl day so it is very inconvenient to use public transit from this hotel. There are a lot of street dwellers all over the region. So this area is probably no more unsafe than others. Police are everywhere on 12/31 and 1/1.

As others mentioned, there is a Vons grocery store only about a block away, maybe a 5 minute walk with crossing the street at the cross walk. They are open 24 hours.
