Detailed Reviews
My family of three stayed two nights in the Inverness room, it was quiet and relaxing. The king size bed was very comfortable and the water pressure was good. The host was nice and accommodating. Breakfast was delicious both mornings. We all loved the pecan apple French toast. Location was perfect, just a quick five minute walk to historic Placerville shops and restaurants. We will definitely be back.

The rooms and decor are all rustic and set the vibe for the place, and it’s cozy but private. I recommend the Aberdeen room, the bathtub is amazing and it has a table and a fire pit/ lounge outside. The mattress wasn’t brand new, but I have a bad back and it was comfortable. You’re close to downtown and the highway, but it’s quiet and safe. Breakfast was good. There is a mini fridge and a keurig in the rooms. Microwave and filtered water, hot and cold, are near the kitchen.

After looking at all the Placerville hotel reviews, we decided on this BnB because it wasn't a chain hotel nor a modern one. Plus the location is perfect, just a short walk to downtown Placerville, altho a bit of a wee hike back up the small hill to the home, but we made it! The house is situated on perhaps a wooded parcel of about an acre, right on the edge of highway 50. And we heard very little noise from the highway and even less after 10 pm other than a siren or two. The history of the house and family was quite interesting, the furnishings old and comfy.
Our room was fine having the second bed for me and king for my traveling friend. Two beds in a BnB are hard to find! Breakfast was good and we thought way too much food but we ate it!! Perhaps a preorder card might be easier for the cook so as to save money and food when preparing? Or maybe a little conversation about what he's going to cook......just a thought. Neither of us drink OJ and failed to tell him ahead of time......
The only complaint was that the lighting needs to be improved. This isn't just with this BnB but with all hotels. There is never good reading lamps in hotels. I need to invest in a clip on light!
But the quiet, location, privacy, the old, and the history of this place will bring us back.

Stayed for two nights with kids in this family-run B&B. Good breakfast, and my wife's dietary restrictions were accommodated. The home is a little creaky, but that's part of the charm. My young kids had a blast exploring the property and playing with toys in a common room.

Every room is named after a place in England. Our room is Inverness. There are books about the monster in Lock Ness. My son read them all and really enjoyed. It reminds me my trip to Lock Ness a few years back.
The host is very friendly. Gretting us and accomendate us with earlier breakfast than usual breakfast time.
The room is very clean. Our famlily enjoyed the stay very much.

Such a disappointing experience. After reading the grand reviews I thought we’d really enjoy this place, but no we did not. Property is unkept and rather creepy. Bugs bugs bugs. Furniture is very old, not in a charming way. Would not recommend.

We had the most amazing stay here and the accommodations were perfect! It felt like we were home with two of our children, spouses and our 4 grandsons. We spent a lot of time together in the sitting room catching up and the little ones had plenty of toys to play with. We also had a wonderful evening of celebration on the front porch with all of our kids and half of the wedding party. So grateful we found the GlenMorey Country House. Tom & Alison are great hosts! Thank you!

I booked into this B&B after having my reservation for the Gunn House Hotel in Sonora inexplicably cancelled 2 months before we were due to travel. I needed to find somewhere to stay so that we could go white water rafting on the South Fork American river nearby and I was having trouble finding a B&B that could take a family of 4 without it being too expensive when I stumbled on the GlennMorey Country House. What a pleasant surprise to find they could do a room with a double bed and day bed with rollaway that could accommodate the family. We arrived in 100+ degrees and walked into a pleasantly cool calm oasis where we found the very comfortably furnished Inverness room waiting for us, just off the guests lounge, which we had to ourselves during our two night stay as none of the other guests seemed to use it. There was also a lovely verandha to relax on in the cooler (high 80's!) evenings after dinner in Pacerville, a short walk away. A delicious breakfast was served by our host Tom in the dining room where we enjoyed the company of fellow guests and long chats with Tom.
This is a great place to stay in an area with few options close to a pleasant little town and the owners are obviously very proud of their Scottish connection. The house is Victorian and is marketed as such so that is what I expected, unlike some reviewers!

I am at a loss as to all the positive reviews of this hotel. I am only writing this review because this website helped me decide to stay here, and I feel so horribly misled. If you are used to staying at any upscale US hotel chain or B&B, avoid this completely. In fact, even an inexpensive chain like the Hampton Inn is far superior to this place. I would have prefered a Comfort Inn even.
The front of the house is old, with peeling pain. The front steps are overgrown, and it is necessary to push through lots of branches to get to the front door. My room had lots of dust, including a very unclean ceiling fan, the bedding was old and did not appear particularly clean; furniture was old and worn. I felt dirty the whole time I was there.
One of the things I like about upscale B&Bs is outstanding breakfast. While our breakfast was fine and similar to something I might cook for a quick weekend meal, it was nothing special. Certainly don't expect anything gourmet (unless some raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries in a dish counts).
Placerville is a rather boring town, kind of like a highway roadstop, with little to see and do. If you end up here, the 'Hey Day Cafe' is the saving grace -- cool casual bistro with outstanding food, great wine list, hip atmosphere.
All in all, if you want to come to California for a romantic weekend in a beautiful B&B, run screaming. Even if you don't care about a place being very nice or the breakfast being gourmet, you could do much better at budget hotel chains that cost less than Glen Morey. I was convinced by all the favorable reviews that the one negative review on this website was wrong. I was fooled. If you are the kind of person who likes the Ritz, this is not the place for you.

Response from Innkeepingmama, owner/manager at GlenMorey Country House
Responded Sep 24, 2008
Dear Reader, We at GlenMorey House have been saddened and also at a loss for why these guests could find nothing good to say about us, and have thought about it at length. Our inn is our home and our livelihood and we are proud of it. We have come up with a couple of possible reasons: Because we were referred to as a hotel, (and compared to one 3 times), I think these folks were seeking that, and found us to be not what they expected. Our house IS old, very old in fact, the third oldest in Placerville at 150 years in 2009. Our hardwood floors, glass doorknobs with skeleton keys, beds, dressers, armoires, and claw foot tubs are over 100 years old and some DO show the nicks and grooves of their age. We purposely have not refinished/replaced these because we like Antiques! We don’t want our décor to appear purchased from Home Depot last year. We love old houses! It is fantastic putting up Christmas decorations and wondering what Christmas was like in this house in 1860, 1900, World War II and the Great Depression! Of primary importance, I do want to emphasize that what is NOT old is our laundry and dish washing system, both of which are under 2 years old and sanitize. I want to make very clear that there is no possible way that we would offer unclean linens to our guests, ever, ever! In honest soul searching we asked ourselves, “Is there any truth to the objections made by these guests?” Possibly, but if so I think it was grossly exaggerated. In July I was diagnosed with two life threatening conditions, (Cancer) and was confined to bed for a while. By August, I was on my feet, thankfully well again, if on shaky knees. Tom had been doing both my usual duties and his, we thought pretty successfully. But, “Is it possible that a ceiling fan was overlooked, that our wisteria arbor at the back door was a bit more bushy than we usually keep it?” Yes, maybe. (However, I checked and it is not that way now). I went in search of the peeling paint, and I found it. On the railing of our rear, parking lot entrance, there were 4 places where the paint was chipped, and I patched them up. The house itself is covered with non-paintable siding and was not peeling anywhere else. But was everything “dirty” or covered in a layer of dust? Absolutely not. We take all complaints very, very seriously, and move to amend them immediately. We place stamped postcards in our rooms to allow guests to make dissatisfactions known anonymously. We are pleased to say they are extremely rare. Because I don’t ever want anyone to feel like they were “misled” into staying with us, I would like to clarify who we are, and what we offer. Please, please read our website! We do not offer a gourmet breakfast, but advertise a “Hearty Farmhouse Breakfast” tasty and filling, and we cater to special dietary needs. The fantastic thing about bed and breakfasts is that they are all different and offer different things, so if something is important to you, ask! Many inns do not have TVs- we do. Quite a few inns have gone to seating their guests at private tables. While we understand some guests may be initially uncomfortable sitting at a long dining room table with strangers, we find the lively, friendly laughter, the conversations and friendships fostered around our dining table is the best part of innkeeping. At our inn you will meet friendly folks from all over the country and the world! Lastly, I would like to defend my town! There are plenty of great things to do in Placerville! It is not a boring place. We have some of the best white water rafting in the state. We have numerous wineries, most of which offer free tasting. September and October boasts a huge, 30 orchard, harvest festival- with pick your own fruit, hay rides, corn mazes, petting zoos, craft booths, and every apple delight you can imagine. For history buffs, the 1849 gold discovery site state park is just eight miles away, and you can try your hand at panning for gold. We invite you to give Placerville, and us, a try. We’re not for everybody, but if you like the kind of things we have described, you won’t be disappointed! Thank you, Alison Loeprich

We planned to go Tahoe but couldn’t go up because of really bad snowstorms. We had to look for other accomodation at Placerville instead.
Almost all hotels were fully booked but fortunately we managed to get 2 rooms at Glenmorey. It was already dark and very cold with light snow when we arrived there. We basically just walked-in to enquire for rooms. The place was dark and very quiet. Quite spooky too to be honest! But Tom, the person in charge, came out quickly after we rang the door bell and welcome us warmly. He showed us our rooms and the way around the country house and left us to do our own thing.
The house is decorated nicely with stuffs from the old days. Very Scottish! It has a large living area with a piano and nice sofa set. The dining area is spacious too.
All in all, we like the place though my daughters felt the place is a bit spooky with all the old Scottish deco.

Hello Karen,
All three of our family rooms- Inverness, Edinburgh & Stirling come with a queen or king bed and a twin bed with roll out trundle so the rooms can sleep up to four.
Thanks for your inquiry!

Somehow, trip adviser sent your question to me rather than to the owners. We found the owners to be absolutely delightful. They themselves do have small children. I'm not certain how A BandB type breakfast situation would fit in with your need to get up and out to work every morning. Good luck in your search for lodging.
