Yes, the rooms are outdated. (If you want quiet, request a room in the back of the hotel). But they evoke the era of the gold rush! Enjoy if for what it is, and explore it. The lobby is wonderful to relax in at night and the balcony has a great atmosphere.
NOTE: If you call to book, the employee may tell you there are no available rooms for the day...this wasn’t true, as we booked a room right after calling. Not sure if that was due to laziness or mistake.
Overall, staff was friendly, accommodating (we needed to change rooms because being too close to the elevator bothered my autistic little brother and they gave us the bridal suite!) and open to answering questions. However, there is no lobby staff after 8pm. So be aware of that and make sure you have what you need before then. There was no one at the desk for check out. But they cut staff hours due to COVID.
I think a lot of these negative reviews are too harsh. Be patient and prepared.
This place is disgusting. It is literally the worst hotel I've stayed at anywhere in the world, with the possible exception of student hostels in developing countries 35 years ago (but at 30x the cost of those places). The lobby smells of "history" as one of the other guests commented. The front desk staff is largely unavailable (they are not there in the evenings after 8pm or mornings before 8am), and surly when they are available. We waited on our room being "cleaned" and when we entered, there was an overwhelming smell of bleach. It smelled as though the entire place had been sloshed down with buckets of bleach. Our eyes began watering within a minute of entering. We left as soon as possible, opened all the windows while we were gone, but it was not much better when we returned.
There was hair in the ("newly cleaned") shower drain, and the water had a suspicious (metallic) smell, so we forwent taking showers. When we threw back the covers on the bed, the we found long human hair (not ours), rumpled sheets, threadbare bedding, and pillows that were probably 30+ years old). All the bedding was synthetic and looking at least that old. Plugs fell out of the outlets. We didn't shower in the morning either, but we couldn't get out of there fast enough. Ridiculous that a hotel that charges $200/night cannot replace its pillows in 30 years and have a room properly cleaned.
I booked 2 nights on Priceline for my little girls bday and my princesses wedding. I got an email that my credit card would t process for one night and to call hotel. I did! Spoke with a woman who knew nothing about how “other reservations” happen (clueless), but probably it was because that 2nd was full. I asked if got certain tonight was good and was assured it was. She apologized and said she’d give us their larger suite and wrote in the late check out.
Then last night I got a cancellation about tonight’s confirmed room. I called and was explaining that I was frustrated and just wanted to make sure I had a reservation. With attitude I was told I did not. I explained again that I had spoken with a person and reiterated that convo and again abruptly was told “well you don’t have a reservation. Thank can make one for you.”
I again calmly explained my frustration and said yes of course I need a reservation but how will I know we actually have one as this happened once already. I also said I’d like up make sure it’s the same room we had at the online price.
With even more attitude, “I don’t know about that but do you want me to make a reservation?”
I replied, “I really don’t appreciate your attitude. We have monumental family events happening and are coming in from out of town. I really just want to make sure it’s going to be a great experience.”
With even more attitude, “m’am you’re going to have to speak with my manager”
Me “perfect that will be awesome” (thinking I’ll get someone more competent and service oriented).
Historic Cary House Frontdesk person “well my manager doesn’t come in until later this afternoon so call back then”
Me “we are supposed to arrive at 3. What time shall I call? Do you have the room or not”
Hung up on!
Called back. No answer.
Repeat
Finally hit an answer and I asked to personally leave a message for said manager to which the reply was “we are full” hung up on again.
