Terranea Resort is lauded for its tranquil and picturesque setting, which guests find ideal for a serene getaway. Many visitors are enchanted by the stunning views from their rooms and the resort's relaxing atmosphere, underscored by live music and a welcoming vibe. The plethora of amenities, including pools, a spa, and ocean activities, garners praise, though some guests encounter service inconsistencies. While the resort's cleanliness receives accolades, room maintenance and cleanliness have room for improvement. Additionally, a number of guests feel the pricing doesn't fully reflect the value, with some concerns over the cost of dining and amenities.

This is a lovely property and a fabulous location, but I doubt we’ll be back because the level of service simply does not meet our expectations or the prices charged at Terranea.

Overall, the entire property seemed understaffed. Check-in line was long. Housekeeping felt rushed (turn down service basically was taking the pillows off the bed - why even both offering it?). Service times at all restaurants, the pool and in-room dining were exceptionally long. It took 50 minutes to get additional toilet paper after we never got turn down service — despite having been asked directly by a room attendant if we wanted turn down service.

When you pay 5-star prices, you expect the TV, vanity mirror, and sink handles to work properly and those things did not work properly in our room. But most problematic was the attitude of some staff at Nelson’s and the Lobby Bar. We came to Terranea specifically because it offered plenty of food and beverage options. We know service at resorts can be slower and more leisurely. But this was really poor compared to other places we’ve stayed. Servers and hosts were inattentive at best and in some cases absent altogether. We understand mistakes happen and we aren’t nitpicking or looking for flaws, but there were too many instances of poor service. For example, on our last night, I was charged for a beer I didn’t order in the Lobby Bar, but our server had disappeared and was also borderline rude that evening, so I didn’t even bother. And honestly, I can kind of understand her demeanor because there were plenty of guests at the resort who were pretty badly behaved and rude to staff.

I absolutely wish I wanted to come back to this beautiful place and property, but I will be spending my time and money somewhere else that makes me feel like a valued guest who deserves good service.

I’ll see if I can summarize. My son had stayed at Terranea Resort and recommended we stay there to begin our 50Th anniversary celebration that included the Rose Parade in Pasadena and the Rose Bowl.

Maria Massey was our first point of contact making reservations, and she was amazing. We booked a special offering That included a room upgrade, and Maria provided a beautiful room with an amazing view of the coastline and pool. Thank you Maria!

The room and anything we saw was spotlessly clean.

We landed at Long Beach Airport and took an $80 taxi to the resort, and then again back to the airport 4 days later. Another $80. We did rent a car for one day set up by Whitney Cicero in concierge. $110 for a large car all in, delivered to the hotel and Midway picked it up seamlessly at hotel. I worked with Daniel Ambrose at Midway and he was efficient, professional and clear. Highly recommend if needed.

Gigi the concierge manager was very friendly and helpful.

Latoya and Drew Conley were also instrumental in giving us such a great trip.

We ate at Nelson’s restaurant three times and all were delicious. Highly recommend their seafood Cobb salad. Also asked them to substitute grilled chicken for the seafood a second time, which they did without question or extra charge. It was all super plentiful as I am a big eating fellow and was stuffed from both Cobbs. Having said that the third visit I thought id try their burger and fries. The burger was absolutely amazing. As good or better than In and Out burgers.

We also ate at Catalina Kitchen twice for breakfast which was delicious. My wife loved the omelette. Having said that, the absolute best deal at Catalina Kitchen was their happy hour deriving from 3-5pm each night. We loved, loved , loved the bang-bang shrimp, the BBQ sliders and the special fries. The last time we got a second order of the shrimp they were so delicious and all reasonably priced. Louisa was our very patient and helpful waitress and server. One complaint I’ve seen is the food can be expensive. Actually all of ours at both places was very reasonable or at happy hour a super fair deal.

We had the time of our life and thank everyone, even those I probably forgot to mention, for a perfect beginning to our 50th anniversary year.

We highly recommend Terranea!

Our experience was very mixed.
Positives-great initial impression, beautiful resort, friendly valet, water given upon arrival for check-in, amazing food, service, and ambiance at Mar'sel-Alex was an amazing server. Casey at Cielo pool was friendly and very helpful. ALL of the food at the resort was fabulous...brunch at Mar'sel, poolside eats at Cielo pool, BBQ at Nelson's, gelato at Sea Beans, and breakfast at Solviva (at the spa).

Negatives-we arrived very early, hoping for early check-in and one of the nicer ocean view rooms. Waited the standard time and were given a room with a small glimpse of the ocean, even though I had emailed that we were celebrating a special birthday. Upon check-in, it was mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday, but nothing in room, no mention of it ever again. Cielo pool DJ music was much too loud...impossible to read or relax, drinks were SO strong, couldn't enjoy them. No tp in bathroom at pool until asked, and men's bathroom was in bad shape. BBQ tickets were $70/each. Good food, but no ambiance and dirty tables with little help. TP in the room was very low quality for such a nice resort. Our room overlooked the pool which was very noisy and sitting out on the balcony, we spent most of the time listening to a couple across the way yelling obscenities to each other. Service at Solviva at the spa was lacking. We had to find someone to order, they dropped our food, and didn't return so we just left and didn't even have the opportunity to tip since it was charged to our room. It seemed like the resort is short-staffed, however it seems that it is fully booked, so I think they need more help. Lastly, we had desired to have a massage, even though one massage is $330/person. I emailed in advance multiple times, but never received a response so we just gave up.

We live in Los Angeles and had to get our house tented this week so needed to find somewhere nearby to call home for a few nights. Normally we stay at Monarch Beach, Montage Laguna Beach, or Lido House in Newport but we needed somewhere a bit closer so we could still drive in to work. Going in, I new based on reading other reviews that I needed to keep my expectations very low..but I truly didn't realize how low I needed them to be. From the minute we arrived, I was beyond confused how this was considered a 5 star hotel. The location is absolutely beautiful, I will give them that - but the service is by far the worst I have ever experienced and not up to par with service I've received at even a 4 star hotel.

The good: location (that's literally it)

The bad:
-Front desk staff are SO rude and condescending (I honestly have too many examples to even list here so just trust me on this one)
-Maid service is non-existent (we were gone all day and came back around 7pm only to find no one had ever come to clean our room
-We're staying in a casita and you have to request a car to get basically anywhere on property
-Wait times at restaurants (specifically Nelson's - our server didn't even take our drink order for 20min)
-Service/servers at the pool are scarce to say the least. Was at the main pool with my daughter for 3hrs at a lounge chair and when someone finally came by after 2hrs I asked them for a kids menu + they were never to be seen again.
-They text you from a concierge number to text them with anything you need but nobody once responded to our texts

In summary, I think if this was a 4 or 3 star hotel, all of the above would make sense and could be chalked up to a you get what you pay for type of thing, but there is NO way that Terranea should be considered a 5 star hotel and absolutely no way they should be charging what they are (we paid roughly $1300/night for a casita room). Do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else.

Shocked by how terrible the service is when we are paying top-dollar to stay here. From the very beginning, the service was abysmal. It took over an hour for the bellhop to bring our bags to our room— when we called letting them know (after waiting 40 minutes) that we have a newborn and needed our diaper bag asap, they did nothing and instead blamed it on us, and after waiting 20 minutes more, they lied to us and said the bags were coming (we have AirTags in our bag and they had not moved). The staff here come into your room without masks on; no one at any of the desks picks up the phones. We called to have our bowls / plates picked up after ordering room service and no one ever came. We are staying in one of the bungalows and every hour there is a loud banging sound (presumably from the plumbing or the pipes or industrial laundry dryers)—and when we called, they said they’d send someone to check on it but no one ever showed up. We are not asking for luxury treatment here — just basic hotel services. It’s absurd that we would be paying the amount that we are paying here and be totally ignored. I would not recommend this resort to anyone and will not be booking this place again.

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon for a stay of 4 nights. the check in was not an issue and there was not many people.
The room was quite ordinary for the price (over $800) the bathroom sink was cracked and the door of the cabinet was hanging off as the hinges lacked screws. (our friends in the next room had the same issue, and even after the room was made the following day, no one came to repair, we had to call, in order to have it fixed: it took 2 days.
No amenities in the bathroom Cream, Q-tips and other regular items you even see at MOTEL 6. NOTHING AT ALL.
The phone did not work properly and with a constant crissy noise it was very hard to hear the party you call. On our check out day I tried to request a porter, stayed on the phone for 12 minutes and no one picked up, I had to go downstairs and request service from 2 attendants who were not serving anyone at the time.
Breakfast at the Catalina Restaurant took 50 minutes before our order was served.
The Brunch on Sunday was OK but at $90 per person, that's to be expected, nothing special though, just extremely expensive as everything else in this "resort".
WE ate twice at restaurant Mar Sel. the first night was OK, the second not so good.
the filet mignon which o=i ordered rare, came to well done and my wife's pasta came not cooked at all, and very hard. my filet was replaced and the second time around was Ok, but for my wife it was just the same so she did not eat. although they took the dish off the bill, it as very disappointing.
One of the pool the first day was full and there were not available chairs, except if you are ready to spend $250 in food or drinks, then you can get a chair. We went to the adult poll which was calm and available. Just for info: the cabanas there go for $500 per day. no wonder they were empty????
This is an overrated, overpriced hotel which service is inexistant in the majority of there departments.
I could go on and on, but I think anyone who read this will get the picture.
Do not stay there: it is too expensive and your certainly do not get your money's worth.

Luxury hotel in RPV with golf, several restaurants, and ocean views. Had a short staycation here with my family in December. We ate at Catalina Kitchen and Nelson’s as well. The best part of the hotel was being able to walk and enjoy the beautiful ocean views. It was very idyllic even though a lot of events like a holiday party and a wedding were taking place there. Valet parking is $67 for overnight parking and is required if you’re staying on the property. Otherwise the daily rate is $27.

We had a couple of small issues with the stay but nothing too big. Note that there is a Keurig machine with pods underneath the bathroom sink so don’t make the same mistake we did and order room service just for the coffee. It took 30 minutes for room service as the dining staff was busy on a weekend morning.

The checkout process was a bit confusing as we had left our luggage across from the front desk, but when we went to pick it up, we were told to go to the valet counter. We did so, and then the girl told us to drive to the executive building (near the handicap parking). The third person we spoke to (the valet attendant) eventually told us that he could get our bags for us and so we waited for a couple of minutes while he grabbed them with our car. Overall, it was still a good stay, but some details could be ironed out.

Terranea is a beautiful property situated on a remote cove about 30 minutes from LAX. Of all the hotels I've stayed at along the Socal coast, this one is for sure the best luxury AND family friendly option. It has multiple pools, water slides...but also a gorgeous spa and several on-site restaurants, plus lots of different activities and live entertainment. There were rumors of a game room but we never found it (if you don't have one Terranea - you should create one!). There's also a small cafe on site for less expensive breakfast/coffee. Bear in mind there is NOTHING close by so unless you're driving, you're limited to the property and/or their shuttles (not sure if the shuttles leave the property or not).

In terms of the facilities, they are nice enough, but not my favorite. Downsides were that they play loud music by the pool area everyday so we could hear that from the moment we woke up. Also despite a $700+ night ocean view room we also had a view of the pool and everyone walking around - this is just what it is unless you get a really cliffside room. Bathtubs are nice in the room but no fireplaces and definitely not enough fire pits around the resort in my opinion. The rooms also weren't full blackout curtains which is CRAZY. It was bright in our room every morning.

However...What they lack in luxury they make up for in service. It was absolutely IMPECCABLE from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. Can't say enough good things about every single staff member we encountered. Dueling pianos on Saturday night was so much fun, the spa massages were worth the price. Their fine dining restaurant wasn't amazing, but Catalina Kitchen hit it out of the park both times we went. Bashi was good enough, too.

I would suggest this resort to families who want a 5* experience if they are going to LA/OC/Disney area. For couples it is also nice (they have an adults only pool) BUT there's so many other great options to consider. We didn't golf but I imagine it's great for golfers too.

I want to start this review by saying the staff is fantastic. Everyone was so helpful and genuine, and did their best to help us with any/all challenges. However that said, we will not be returning anytime soon. While the property is beautiful, the resort is skimping on benefits for the guests and focusing on profits. All doors and windows of the resort in the main areas are open 24/7. As the temperature drops significantly at night and even during the day was very chilly, if you are stuck with a room on the main/ground floor be prepared to wear a parka anytime you walk out of your room. Do they just not want to pay the heat bill so that customers can be comfortable? Additionally, there is a $50 resort fee and $50 parking fee because even though there is self parking, you still have to pay the $50 if you want to keep your car onsite. Our car was clean when we arrived, and after two days was returned to us covered in bird poop and debris from the tree it was parked under. For that amount of money and lack of parking options, you'd think they could at least clean the car off before returning, now we have to pay to get our car cleaned again. The room itself needs a major upgrade. We booked an ocean view room, but the slider door was so old and broken we could not even open it to experience any fresh air let alone the balcony and view. They need to fix the plumbing, as the tub drained extremely slow and water pressure in the shower was terrible. The dimmer lights in the bathroom did not work and one of the two phones in the room did not work. If you do not have a reservation at one of the onsite restaurants you have no option to eat there, as they will not even allow you to order food to go. Yet - good luck trying to get the concierge to help you with booking a reservation, as there was never anyone there to help.

Room smells like mold. When we called the front desk they said it is because of the ocean. I find that hard to believe because we don’t smell the smell anywhere except for our room. Also there are no plugs by the bed which is weird and made it hard to charge my phone in a convenient spot. Our room was only given one patio chair which was annoying because both of us couldn’t sit outside our room together. When we arrived we let them pack our luggage on a cart and they said it would be right to our room. No it wasn’t! It took two and a half hours on a Thursday to get our luggage. The only reason it came that fast was because we called and then they called us three additional times while trying to locate our things. Then when we were leaving the property on Friday morning we had texted the number for valet and it said our car would be there in ten minutes and it ended up taking 20 minutes. On Friday the entire adult pool was closed all day for a private event, which meant that there was no room at any of the other pools. I feel like when you pay to have a child free pool accessible that should stay true and we weren’t even made aware it was going to be closed. It didn’t seem that the 13 and over pool rule was being kept because there was a little six year old who was splashing around in the 13 and over pool and no one said anything. Doesn’t surprise me though because there was constantly trash in the pool (napkins and cups). One time the pool attendant even asked us to get someone else’s napkin trash out of the pool with our foot. So disgusting! I expected cocktail waitresses to come around for food and drink orders at the pool and I was wrong. They just have a ton of staff that all hang around together and do not cocktail waitress at all. Overall the staff on property are the most unfriendly and rude that I have ever witnessed. There were only a few staff members who were kind and even that smiled. Megan at the pool was very friendly and kind along with her pool manager. Then housekeeping was lovely. The lady who helped locate our luggage was kind as well, but overall so disappointed for the kind of money this costs. I would not recommend. But I would recommend stopping by for people watching because the people who come here are so wild and high maintenance lol
