People will say this is "off the beaten path" or "out of the way", but that is exacltly what we were looking for for a one nighter get away. We loved the sprawling grounds, the privacy of the haciendas, the amenities and the quality and choice of food in the restaurant. Great for social distancing during Covid.
I've stayed here 6 times, since 2001, and I will not be returning until they've revamped under new management. We were utterly disappointed by our Christmas stay at Rancho Valencia. We had been under lockdown for nearly 10 months and felt a "contactless" getaway at one of our favorite California resorts would be just what the doctor ordered! Upon arrival, we noticed how empty the place looked, but figured, "hey, we're ballsy and everyone is under lockdown!" We gave our name, were handed plastic key cards, and were ushered (via a man in a golfcart) to our $1500/nt bungalow. By the way, is it really "high season" when you're at maybe 30% capacity during a pandemic? We entered our "handicapped" suite (strange, because we don't have any physical handicap) and the staff had left a little jug of strange (neither of us liked it) mulled wine, a couple juice glasses with holly berries in them, and two delightful cookies. We ordered room service three times and were disappointed 2/3. Our breakfast, just simple egg dishes, arrived cold, with the eggs overcooked, and the potatoes sat under the heating lamp way too long. One evening, they gave us a mountain of popcorn chicken that was inedible. The list goes on and on, but I don't want to bore you. The main complaint was that the menu was completely sparse. So few options, zero specials, and we couldn't have been more disappointed about that. We just drove 2 hours to order from a sad menu and paid $1500 a night for it? Lame. Shouldn't you focus on your menu when people can't use your pool, your spa, or sit outside at your lovely restaurant?? Could have paid my rent, and then some, for this lackluster experience. By the way, they don't have tangible menus in the room, so don't go looking for them. You have to use your phone to get a QR code. While I'm at the age where I have no problem doing this, you can imagine the amount of phone calls they get from anyone over the age of 60! My mom looked for the menu for 10 minutes, while I was in the shower, and was distraught by the time I came out to help. While they're part of the Relais & Chateau group, one could easily argue that it's been awhile since R+C have visited, because I certainly wouldn't want to put my name on this property. This stay was a total bummer.…
When my October reservation at the newly remodeled and reopened Park Hyatt Aviara gat cancelled by that hotel because a private group bought out the whole place, I had to seek other accommodations for my pandemic staycation. I then remembered Rancho Valencia, where I have stayed several times in the past many years ago when I was an active and avid tennis player. This stay was an excellent reintroduction to this gorgeous property, thanks to the Park Hyatt! Rancho Valencia is situated in the midst of an exclusive residential area in posh Ranch Santa Fe. Entry is past a gatehouse where you are warmly welcomed. During the pandemic, just beyond your temperature is checked and you are given a wristband. The lodgings are further up lovely road. The Spanish Colonial Hacienda-inspired resort is low-slung, with just 49 single-story casitas/suites spread out over 45 lushly landscaped acres. There are also some multi-bedroom Villas and a Hacienda 3-bedroom home. There are 4 categories of Suites, all with private patios and at least 900 square feet: Agave, Palm, Olive Grove and Valencia. Agave and Olive Grove are split-level studios, while Palm and Valencia have separate bedrooms. Olive Grove and Valencia have private hot tubs on their patios. I booked an Olive Grove Suite, and it was exquisite. It was very spacious and the attention to detail in its furnishings and design were noted. There is a fridge/minibar stocked with complimentary beverages and snacks, replenished daily. The huge bathroom had a steam shower, separate tub, and enclosed Toto Japanese-style toilet. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and newspapers are delivered each morning. The reception "Clubhouse" building houses the reception desk (there is no "lobby" per se), the 2 restaurants (The Pony Room and Veladora) and some meeting rooms. The large 2-story Spa and Fitness Centre has its own building (now under renovation), a Yoga Pavilion, and a pool. The main pool is situated amidst the casitas, as are several complimentary laundry rooms. The resort originally had 17 tennis courts situated in 3 areas; 2 of these now house outdoor fitness equipment and another is now for pickleball. Two of the tennis courts are red clay. There are also complimentary bikes, and Bentleys to test drive. The indoor restaurant Veladora is currently closed. During my stay, The Pony Room was open for outdoor dining in the central courtyard and on the back patio. Weekend evenings, the adjacent croquet lawn was converted into an exquisite outdoor dining area complete with area rugs, lighting, heat lamps, fire pits, a few tents, and live music. i enjoyed several breakfasts and dinners here. The restaurant is popular with locals too. With the ever-changing pandemic scenario, I believe there is only take-out available now, plus room service. I did have some room-service meals also. You are asked if you will be dining indoors or on your patio. Service overall was exceptional. A great place to sequester during a pandemic or any time at all.…
Rancho Valencia is truly a hidden gem in north San Diego. With only 49 hacienda-style suites on over 45 acres it is the perfect place to find space and privacy. Each suite is a minimum of 900sf with an indoor fireplace as well as a large patio outdoor fireplace and hot tub. So really we went right at home. The lush grounds are immaculately kept with a beautiful tennis courts, pickle ball courts, walking trails and more. And with weather being lovely year round, eating outdoors is a major plus, especially due to Covid restrictions. But the RV team has gone above & beyond and transformed the one of their two restaurants, The Pony Room into an outdoor wonderland. It is by far the most luxurious outdoor restaurant tent I have seen. And as a Relaix & Chateau property, the food, drinks and dining service are stellar. And they even deliver fresh squeezed Valencia orange juice to your suite each morning. And the fitness programming is amazing, each morning I started off my day with a wonderful Pilates class under the gorgeous, blue San Diego sky. Currently the spa is under renovation but based on my past experiences, this will again be a highlight come spring. The Rancho Valencia is naturally a resort to easily social distance and the team has gone above and beyond to keep Covid protocols will they continue to provide the most luxurious of experiences. …
2020 has mostly been a disaster as most rationale thinking people will agree. One of the casualties of the year has been vacations as many of us have simply just stayed home. We had a great vacation scratched in the Spring when COVID lockdowns and air travel along with hotel availability literally fell off the cliff. Fast forward to September and things seemed to be getting less restrictive and the opportunity to get away seemed to be within reach. Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa had been on our radar for many years to visit but for one reason or another it never happened. Until this year, oddly enough. We checked with our usual list of 4 and 5 star properties but felt uneasy from what we were hearing back from them and their reviews from customers were forbidding at best. So, we decided to give Rancho Valencia a shot and were encouraged by the favorable recent reviews we read. We made reservations in September to stay at the property in October, arriving 10/19 and departing 10/22 (three nights). With some excellent guidance from Steve Homolac and Katherine “Kat” Lengyel-Leahu at the front desk, we booked a Palm One Bedroom Suite King Villa, which turned out to be magnificent; spacious, smartly appointed, private and comfortable. When you book upper-end luxury resorts you should expect great service, excellent accommodations and appealing amenities. Rancho Valencia got off to a fast start after we booked our stay by immediately reaching out to us with personalized communications from both a reservations representative and then a few days later from the Concierge Team who immediately set-up dinner reservations and activities and followed up with a well-organized itinerary sent back to us within a day. This was stunning to us as our old favorite resort could not even reserve a time for us at the pool let alone book dinner and other activities ahead of time. Most resorts have reverted to blaming any service hiccups on COVID-19. Not Rancho Valencia. Our Concierge agents, who need special recognition, set the tone early and it just got better. Our initial Concierge contact was with Reily, who could not have been more pleasant and then throughout our stay, the aforementioned, Kat Lengyel-Leahu, who prepared and sent us our itinerary and would continue to cater to every request we had throughout our stay. Let me take you through some examples of our experiences at this true five-star resort. When we arrived at the property with our detailed itinerary already in hand, our first encounter was the front gate which is monitored 24/7 and provides security to guests during their stay. Our initial greeting was from a very pleasant gentleman named Robert who welcomed us to Rancho Valencia. after confirming our identity as guests, he politely directed us to the next step of our check-in which was a very brief and innocuous COVID-19 screening which included a temperature check at our car windows and then providing us with color coded bracelets to wear while on the property to signal to anyone we encountered that we were temperature checked and cleared at the gate before entering the property. I think the resort handled this process very well as they did not create an uncomfortable or intrusive evaluation and did not ask a multitude of personal questions. Very professional and effective. The short drive up the rustic and tree lined road to the resort lobby ended with another pleasant greeting by valet services and our soon-to be bellman, Brooklyn. He led us to reservation check-in and Concierge where we met Kat in person for the first time. She quickly checked us in, gave us room keys and a map and reviewed our itinerary with us. She directed us back to the front where Brooklyn was waiting for us in a golf cart and he led us to our villa as we followed in our vehicle. Once we were at the villa, Brooklyn got our luggage into our room and answered any questions we had about the room or how to get around the property, such as the shortest walk to the main pool from our villa. Very professional and friendly. We had requested an early check-in so that we could settle in, get unpacked and enjoy some time at the pool during our first day in. It was a nice positive bonus to receive that benefit. So off to the pool we went, where we found a clean and organized area in a beautiful setting (seating and lounge chairs spaced nicely for distancing). Our poolside food and beverage server was Arnie, who could not have been more attentive and pleasant. And now we can give five stars to our first food encounter. Probably one of the best sandwiches we have had in quite some time, and it was just from their pool menu. This gave us some great hope that the full-service restaurant would be a good experience as we would be dining there later that night. We dined at the resort’s Pony Room restaurant. A nice menu selection of a wide range of foods from beef to chicken to Mexican. We a couple of servers and our most memorable and favorite was Manuel who also would remember us on subsequent evenings and always come over and say hello. The food was wonderful and they also had a nice wine and alcohol beverage selection. We love to get room service for breakfast when we get away and we have had good experiences and real bad experiences with it in the past. But now we can say we had an excellent experience with room service for every morning of our stay. Extremely fast, accurate and delicious; the food was even hot when it arrived. One of the added perks every morning at Rancho Valencia is receiving the morning paper of your choice from their selection list (Wall Street Journal as an example) and each room receives a fresh carafe of chilled orange juice delivered to their door and left on the service shelf outside the door. What a great way to get the day started. And if you choose to do so you have coffee makers and coffee in each room to brew your own if you don’t have it delivered with room service. As the day goes on and you get hungry and need a snack, no worries because each room has complimentary snacks (chips, popcorn, energy bars, etc.) and unlimited beverages such as water, soft drinks, ice tea, etc. in your room frig. We dined at the Pony Room for the next two nights based on our great first night experience as we had our eye on a couple of other menu items we wanted to try and thus cancelled our reservations at other restaurants we had in town. Other than the food continuing to impress the next two evenings, so did our service. We wanted to give a special thanks and recognition to our fabulous server we had those two nights by the name of Marshall. He was wonderful and always so attentive plus a great sense of humor and conversationalist. Be sure to request to be seated in Marshall’s section when you dine at the Pony Room. And by the way, the deserts are off the charts incredible and large enough to remind you that you are on vacation and it doesn’t matter for a couple nights. One last note to add, if you have ever had the desire to drive a beautiful Bentley automobile or if you are accustomed to driving one, take advantage of the very special perk the property offers which is the use of one of these beautiful vehicles for several hours to just drive around into town or just cruise the countryside in it. It is first come first serve each morning so if you call first thing in the morning you may snag one for the day or evening. Well, that is a wrap on this review and we would like to thank the wonderful and hard working people we met during our stay Rancho Valencia and give a true 5 star to this beautiful property. We encourage everyone to go and enjoy a first class experience from start to finish.…
