My daughter and I stayed in a charming rustic cabin. The interior was rustic, but had all the amenities. The grounds are lovely and shaded by oaks and pine trees. There is also with a creek that runs through a shady park. The owners are helpful and friendly, and even let us hold two new puppies they had just adopted. Our 2 night visit was wonderfully relaxing. I will be back!

I would love to give this wonderful place a five star. Beautiful, clean the women and older gentleman seem very pleasant. However there is a young boy, probably not even 18 who seems to have a problem saying hello. My family is mixed, he speaks to my wife who is Mexican, each time that I have said hello he literally looks away, I am a Black Woman (just putting that out there). It's unfortunate that he is so young and already has some sort of hate/prejudice in his heart. Young man grow up and I will pray for you. To the owners lovely location but unfortunately my family will not be returning, thank you for the 6 lovely days!

The Giant Oaks Lodge in neighboring Running Springs offers private mountain rooms and cozy cabins with king or queen beds, in room spas, stone fireplaces, cable TV with HBO, phones, microwave ovens, and refrigerators. During the Memorial Day weekend, a small cabinette for two ran us a reasonable $89/night. Our room was extremely clean and cozy, but not cramped. The staff (along with the resident six cats) could not be friendlier and more accommodating. Running Springs is only a few miles down the road from Lake Arrowhead and nearby Skyforest. Tips on dining: breakfast at the Country Coffee Shop (Running Springs), and dinner at the Cedar Inn.

I have a daughter that had worked for Susa and Gary, she no longer works for them they are both drunks and don't care about their guest in any way. They leave the storage door open where all the sheets and bedding is and the cats on the property lay all over the clean sheets and so due to that there is cat hair all over the clean bedding. Their never there to answer their phones or to be of any help to their guest. Susa is a very rude drunk and pays her employee's cheap and under the table. Many of the rooms have issues and things that need to be fixed and Gary won't fix them.priced way to high for what you get there. I would not recommend this lodge to no one.

I don’t usually post after traveling, but with my experience at the Giant Oak Lodge in Running Springs, CA, I want to be sure this is read and taken into consideration before you make reservations at this establishment. We frequent mountain lodging areas several times a year. We have been to many quaint towns and invite friends to come with us. After this experience, we will not be back to the Giant Oak Lodge. Upon making our reservation with the owner, she was very friendly and appeared to welcome our reservation. I called back to confirm the rate and her assistant helped me because the owner was with a customer. We were quoted a rate for a Saturday night. Upon arriving for check in, my girlfriend and I were charged two different rates for the identical rooms. We went back to the check in office and bringing it to her attention that she undercharged my card and overcharged my girlfriends card. She said the rate was a different rate than what I was previously quoted. “Oh we must have quoted you an incorrect weekday rate” was her statement. She then recharged my card for the higher rate. Had I known the real rate, I would not have made the reservation, as this establishment does not warrant rates that high. Seeing that is was her mistake, there was no concession given, either a discount, or upgrade or anything.

The next morning my husband and I woke to no water in the toilet, I called the front desk with no answer. There was no emergency line, so I left a message and also asked if we could check out one hour later than the 11:00am check-out. I also went to the office and it was locked up. No one in site. After my husband fixed the toilet himself, we set out to breakfast and a hike with our friends.

Upon returning to the lodge at 11:30 to check out, again the office was locked up tight and we were approached by a cleaning lady in the parking lot. She began to lecture us as to the fact that we were needed to get out of our room and rudely told us check out time was 11:00a. I reiterated the fact that we had room issues and requested a 12:00p check out because we were behind schedule because of it. She did not care or want to hear us and told us that the owners are not available on Sunday. It was apparent a that our business did not matter and return business is not important to the establishments owners.

I had high hopes for this place, even though we rented out the last available cabin and it was quite small (~200 sq. ft) for $140. The setting of the property is beautiful, especially when covered in snow.

Where things fell apart was when the 'original' gas furnace quit working at bedtime. Knowing a fair amount about HVAC, I opened the access door to see if anything obvious was wrong. I was shocked at the amount of spiderwebs, dust, etc. that I found. A fire hazard for sure! I was unsuccessful in getting the main burner to light. We watched as the temperature dropped to 58 degrees in our room.

Being cold was one thing. What made it worse was the owner has a large set of wind chimes not more than 15' from our room. They chimed non-stop. Then there were the shovels which fell from their hooks due to the wind. There must have been 4-5 shovels that dropped over the course of an hour. Each one awaking me and reminding me of how cold it was.

Then next morning I dropped the key off early in the drop box with a note to call me about he room. I went skiing most of the day and when driving back down the mountain stopped in to talk to the owner.

When I asked if he received the note he said that he did and then immediately went in on how the heat works just fine and that I messed with the furnace causing it not to work. I explained that it did not work initially and I was trying to get it to work but had no luck. He told me that I should have called him but that it was my fault that I didn't. No matter what I said I was wrong.

In the end, he offered to refund $10. I requested $40 which he hesitantly agreed to. I thanked him for that, though any reputible establishment would have comped the room.

So, bottom line, we got a small room with no heat for $100. Will we be back? No. Will we tell our friends of our experience? Yes.

I read the 15 reviews and wondered at the ability of human beings to have so many different experiences at a common venue.

My spouse and I found our room (105) clean and with plenty of storage room for a three day stay.

We also appreciated the decision NOT to have a table but rather to have a BAR. That worked out very well for us. I, personally, was intrigued by the fact that the refrigerator had no controls but somehow "chose" a perfect temperature for our food. I also liked that the microwave was extremely simple to operate.

If I were to offer one suggestion for improvement, it would be to provide a standard sized coffee pot with better coffee.

But that is relatively minor compared to all the pluses.

For some reason, we were surprised that our room had been cleaned during our absence (when we went skiing). The beds had been made, fresh towels provided (including towels for the spa).

We loved the fireplace and were intuitive enough to discern that it was controlled by the thermostat. Perhaps the person at the desk could tell you that when you check in. I don't know. I was reading the complaints about not being able to figure out the fireplace and wondered why people complain rather than asking for help or information.

The hot tub is quite, quite remarkable. Wow! Nice! The pool also "looked" great but I didn't swim because I like really warm water to swim in and the water wasn't quite warm enough for my tastes.

If you like cats, this is a terrific office to visit. The cats are beautiful and friendly. What's not to like here? You have a person running this place who is a cat lover.

I did not experience the drive to Snow Valley as being 20 minutes. Maybe only 10. Someone in another review complained about the long drive. Gad! Even if it was 20 minutes, one has to wonder: who are these people?

I mean, a 20 minute drive compared to 90 minutes from Los Angeles??

I don't know. So much of one's happiness in life depends on one creating that happiness for oneself. You could say, conversely, the same for one's misery.

Some people are the type to find something wrong with everything, you know? My fiancé and I have stayed at the Giant Oaks Lodge for long 4th of July weekend two years running now and we plan on coming back every year!!

First off, for a Mom and Pop owned and operated place, their website (---) is very helpful, showing several photos of each room or cabin. We tried a different room each time and our favorite is by far #108. They are also very friendly people and will give you info on local happenings, just ask.

Running Springs is about 2 city blocks long (to be generous), but the residents think it's a lot bigger, which is endearing. Know in advance not to expect to find a great deal to do up there aside from visit Big Bear or Arrowhead, walk the shops, go to meals, picnic, nature walks, relax, swim, etcetera. It's very laid back compared to urban life below. When at Arrowhead, you have to eat at the Thai place near the water. We tried several restaurants during our stay and the Thai place beat them all, hands down. Their Mai Tai's are awesome as well as all of their dishes are fresh and delish! Go for an early dinner on weekends- around 6 is best. It gets crowded later on and service becomes slow. Near the lodge is a cafe for breakfast, just know the eggs and breakfast meats run a bit greasy. Their Belgian waffle with fruit and whipped cream was yummy!

The rooms at Giant Oaks are exceptionally clean and nicely decorated compared to your 3 & 4 Star corporate hotels. The fireplace (for those without a clue) is controlled by the thermostat on the wall. There was lots of recessed lighting (even with dimmers) and a ceiling fan. We stayed in July and you don't need A/C up there. There was a mini-fridge in the room, microwave, and coffee maker. They leave you danishes for breakfast (or snacks), regular and decaf coffee, and even hot chocolate mix.

The private balcony gives you a nice place to enjoy a cup of morning coffee or some evening wine. We found the place quiet even though the main road to Big Bear is not far from your room and we even slept with the patio door open for a nice breeze. We heard no rowdy bikers either. Staff did not bother us and although we spent most of our stay hanging out in the room and swimming in the indoor pool, housekeeping serviced our room several times without us even knowing! We didn't even see any other guests although the place had no vacancy. It's a perfect, quaint, mountain retreat and if you compare pricing to comparable stuff at either of the lakes, you'll see what a bargain it is.

The bathroom has a shower built for two although the water pressure isn't so great when you run both showerheads, but it's still a lot of fun to do. We loved the big, two-person jet tub in the room, just 10 feet from the bed, and within view of the fireplace. Don't forget to bring some bubble bath and some bubbly! We used the tub each night and morning. No wonder why no one was at the spa- you have a private one in your room!

This is the kind of place for ROMANTIC couples to visit, not families with kids or friends. If you have someone special you'd like to share a romantic getaway with, this is the place to get away from the norm and back to each other. I can't wait to go back and think we'll even go this winter to experience it in the snow. This place is definitely one of those gems to stay at; it's a great atmosphere at an unbeatable price!
