Nestled in a central location, The Citizen Hotel, Autograph Collection, is celebrated for its elegant and historic charm, with guests often lauding the unique and comfortable rooms. While the atmosphere and amenities like free champagne add to the experience, some visitors feel the value is compromised due to pricey valet and room services.
Opinions on service are split, with accolades for staff friendliness balanced by critiques of management. Cleanliness stands out as a strong point, although there have been occasional remarks about maintenance.

This hotel had a lot of vintage charm to it...felt very historical. It’s in a good location in terms of accessing tourist activities, but it’s in a very busy area and was super noisy at all hours (loud traffic noises and people walking downtown). There were many protests going on as well. In the park, they had set up several large speakers and were yelling into microphones for two days and well into the night (until like 11pm one night). Definitely not the hotel’s fault, but they should really be aware of what’s going on in the immediate area and warn their guests given the price of this hotel.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Bc of Covid, food options were limited and the rooms don’t have microwaves, but anything you buy to eat, they will heat up for you.
The bathroom and room itself were spotless! And HUGE! Even had room in the bathtub for soaking! But the plug didn’t work :(
The room had a fridge and coffeemaker, but no microwave. Beds were super comfortable and had charging ports in convenient locations. Also had streaming options on the TV which is always a great touch nowadays!
There is no parking. You either have to park in metered parking out on the street or in one of the nearby garages which charge exorbitant fees (but that’s very standard for a California city). Given the price of this hotel, they really should offer some kind of parking incentive. I think my parking came out to be almost $30 total - and we only stayed for one night!
The views are really nice - you can see the capital building and a nice park. But unfortunately there were many homeless people sleeping in the park and out on the sidewalks. I was approached repeatedly when walking from the hotel to parking and to Old Town and I felt unsafe.
Giving 4 stars for the parking and the noise. Otherwise was a great stay!

There were no carts available at the time of our arrival to bring our stuff up but the valet staff was extremely helpful and brought our stuff up for us. They also only offer valet parking for $35 a night but the workers were very nice and respectful and kept our car safe and in good condition.
Check in process was seamless. There is a $200 refundable security deposit collected at check-in. We stayed in a Deluxe King Bed room on the 4th floor with our two cats. It was a decent size. Super nice room, black out curtains, very clean! The room did not have a microwave unfortunately but it does have a small fridge. They had two bottle waters in the room but it is at a charge for $3 each. Only the toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion) were complimentary.
For anyone who has cats who love to hide, the beds have a little space underneath for small cats to hide, so just watch out for that. For the most part, we kept our cats in the bathroom which was spacious enough for both of them to play, poop, and eat.
Housekeeping staff is lovely! At check out, Austin was extremely helpful in making sure we got a cart this time around, and explained everything we needed to know about the check out fees.
Overall, great service. Would definitely come back here again, especially since not a lot of hotels accept cats. Hotel is also in a great central location downtown with plenty of restaurants around the area to choose from.

I wrote a separate review about the hotel's excellent restaurant (The Grange) and suggested visitors should also stay here at the hotel to enjoy great dining and then taking the elevator home to your hotel room. .
I understand new ownership renovated both the rooms, public space, and restaurant. It all ties together to create a rustic but modern day version of an historic office building from the past. This explains why this hotel has THREE guest elevators. That is a luxury for such a small, compact hotel. Normally, one experiences slow elevator service with just two guest elevators. Not here though; that's a plus in itself.
The exterior facade is quite compact with separate restaurant and hotel entrances (normally). You can enter the restaurant from the main hotel lobby as well. Speaking of the entry lobby, it's quite impressive and does remind you of an office or bank building, but redesigned nicely. Walk straight in to enter the smaller lobby and front desk to check in/out. Again, it was recently renovated and has a cozy, library type feel. In fact, to the left of the front desk is a seating/lounging area with shelves full of legal book binders. To the right of the front desk is a small space where you can find hotel amenities for sale, along with some half bottles of wine quite reasonably priced and of good quality. the front desk staff warmly treated us well and one just has to accept the safety protections put in place for both staff and guests. By now, I think we're all somewhat used to those.
Take one of those three guest elevators to a nicely renovated guest room. Our room was down the hall and was quite spacious. Due to the original design, you can expect that many of the rooms are shaped and space differently. This is no cookie cutter hotel.
Our room (1200) was fine with us with plenty of space for a sitting area and bedroom separate. The bath area was also a nice space. The bathtub was one of those kinds that you would have to have help with getting in and out though. So, we just used the shower. In the sitting area, there was the main closet with the usual amenities (safe, coffee maker, hangars, robes, slippers, refrigerator, ironing board, etc.
In spite of the lighting challenges in the room, the designers have done their best to provide adequate lighting and colors to brighten up the spaces so one doesn't feel to confined.
I enjoyed my visit at the hotel and in the restaurant. I think you'll find it a nice respite in the city of Sacramento. This area of town really felt quite safe but we did only spend one night there. Next time we would walk around the area more.

Really nice hotel with NO hidden pet fees. Usually, when you’re checking in at a hotel they have a surpriese pet fee that you must pay, but this one was clear, and NO pet fee.
We felt really nice in there, also the staff was really kind and always offering water for our dog.
Nice job!

Cute hotel but the parking is a nightmare. On the website it states hassle free parking, valet services and onsite parking. ALL FALSE. They don’t advertise or tell you that due to COVID there is no valet. So they tell you to park a block up the street in the city hall parking structure, which they don’t validate, or take your chances on the street at a meter. Also they are not in control of the parking structure, which we found out the hard way. My family left for dinner and when we returned we couldn’t get back into the parking structure because for whatever reason it was closed and all entrances were blocked. We asked the hotel could they get us in and they said no. They said we just had to find parking somewhere on the street, which at that time there was none. They then said we could park at a different hotel 4 blocks away. Oh but we would have to walk back as they don’t offer transportation. In addition the restaurant and bar onsite are closed due to COVID, also not advertised. All of these things should be advertised so guest know what they are getting into. Well long story short, we ended up leaving this hotel and staying at another amazing hotel right down the street that offered valet and self park right onsite. The Citizen will not be visited by me or my family in any future visits.

This is a 2 - 3 star hotel masquerading as a 4 star. Absolutely not up to par with the cleanliness nor service of other hotels in the area (ex. The Sawyer). I took a chance staying here instead of in the aforementioned hotel in the DoCo area, and it turned out to be a bad call. The room looked nice upon first glance, but once we settled in, it was a bit disgusting honestly. See the pictures of crumbs and hair in the desk drawer upon opening, stains on the carpet, dried blood on the wall, a panel on the floor at the headboard area, white crusty smudges all over the Keurig machine and coffee tray, grime/dirt all around the corners of the room, filthy grout in the bathroom and on the shower walls, etc. Not to mention two broken outlets and a broken handle on the armoire. For a hotel that posts their nightly rate on the door (tacky) as $550, you'd think they'd care a little more about the quality of experience they are providing.
Additionally, I've never been to a hotel where the guest service was so limited and strange about simple requests. My husband had a headache, when we called down to see if they had a simple two pack of aspirin the attendant said they "aren't allowed to sell us medicine" and we could walk a few blocks down to 7/11.. walking by all of the homeless people. The first thing that struck me was what a weird way to word that. First of all, a hotel of this caliber should provide guest simple items. Again, the other luxury hotel in the area will go get you a hair straightener if you need one, all you have to do is ask. Second of all, if you don't have an item for guests just say "sorry we don't have that available", don't act like we're asking for narcotics when someone just needed Tylenol. Additionally, they don't answer their phones EVER for outside calls. We attempted to call over multiple days close to a dozen times and not once did we make it through to a person, receiving a voicemail full alert each time.
Cesar Chavez park has always been a hot spot for homeless, I expected this, but I did not expect the hotel to direct its guests to walk in this area at night. Not a great idea in my opinion.
Now let's add to the poor experience with Grange, the attached restaurant next door. Poor service, a hostess that could not even fake being pleasant, hair in the food, and flat out mold on the blackberries in our side of fruit. The woman behind our table exclaimed, "this is the worst service!", so glad to know the experience wasn't exclusive to us.
The only redeeming quality to the hotel was the beautiful architecture and politcal art. I've never had such an unwelcoming experience in 35 years of traveling. We will absolutely never stay here again while in town.

Once I arrived for my two night stay I was warned of a rave across the street and a wedding onsite. I noticed in night one that outside noise was pretty well regulated and not much of a problem. Then came the onsite wedding. Now that is something that the hotel itself can monitor or have control over but it clearly feels no obligation to its non-wedding guests. The wedding music throbbed, was too loud within the hotel rooms, and I can only imagine the damage to the hearing of all the guests at the wedding. It's one thing to have a wedding onsite and quite another to let it be so loud that even hotel guests' ears can be damaged. Despite its charm I'll not stay here again and cannot recommend the Citizen Hotel. You can't favor some guests over others in this way.

We booked 1 night here to relax and get a good night sleep. When we went to the room and used the bathroom everytime we flushed the toilet water from behind the toilet will leak and splash to the bathroom floor. I did call front desk and they moved us to a different room. The room that they moved us to was a huge mistake. Down the hall from our room there was 2 families with kids. There Kids was out in the hall in the middle of the night horsing around knocking on other peoples door and constantly slamming there doors back and forth making it very uncomfortable to relax. The parents was no where to be found. I called front desk 2 times to address the issue but front desk did not resolve the problem. My husband even went down to the front desk in the morning because it started again in the morning but nothing was resolve. I paid $166.92 to stay at this hotel and i felt like i was staying at a motel 6. I am very disappointment how front desk didn't do anything about this. We stay at marriott hotels all the time and this is by far the worst experience. I want a refund for this restless uncomfortable nightmare stay. You think you pay a good amount of money to get a quiet relaxing good night sleep but this stay was a nightmare. I'm so mad and disappointed on how this hotel handle it and Marriott needs to make this right.

This hotel looked way better in photos than it was in real life. I’m a huge history and architecture nerd so I was looking forward to staying somewhere historic but this hotel is in need of a gut rehab. My biggest downside was that the shower took 5 minutes to get hot, which is way longer than I’ve ever waited anywhere. Having spent nearly $300 a night definitely wasn’t worth it so I’d suggest staying elsewhere for a better value.

Only 2 floors require the key for the elevator. The rest don’t. And yes several times that key won’t work in the elevator slot.
Daytime walking is quite safe. Be sure to look up, the architectural details of many of the buildings is gorgeous. I walk in the early evening, but anything too far past dark and I'd use Uber or grab a cab.
My King suite was in the corner of the hotel overlooking the park, and there was no tub. Just a large shower. Those guys give good advice to call the hotel, the service is awesome.
