Alila Napa Valley is often celebrated for its serene atmosphere and modern rooms with luxurious amenities and scenic vineyard views, which guests find well-maintained and spotlessly clean. The central location receives praise for its proximity to local vineyards, despite occasional street noise. Hotel amenities like relaxing massages and a comprehensive gym are popular, yet some guests miss having a hot tub. While the staff generally earns accolades for being friendly and helpful, there have been instances of service falling short. However, some travelers question the value, pointing to high rates and overpriced amenities.

We had an overnight stay on Sunday to celebrate our anniversary. The moment we arrived at valet, we were checked-in. The guest services and reservation tie-in was unexpected. Because we arrived early our room wasn't ready so we were led to the "living room" where we were greeted by the restaurant manager. There really wasn't a moment we were left astray. We mentioned that we had a dinner reservation and he readily confirmed it.
A short while later our room was ready and we were shown to our room, our luggage and belongings were already hung in the closet. Our room was spacious with all the modern amenities, the jaw dropping thing was that it opens up to the beautiful Beringer vineyard. The view with the blue sky is amazing, quite an envy when my friends saw the photos.
We checked out everything in the room, and everything works!
I have never had a French press coffee service as an in-room amenity, how classy!
The bed and linens were quite fine, we had a very restful sleep; for one thing, the bed did not cause a tsunami whenever my partner tossed and turned as some other hotel beds would do.
Love the spacious bathroom and clean smelling bath amenities.
As for The Acacia dining experience, our special occasion was acknowledged immediately and we sat at a cozy corner. The food was delicious. Everyone who came to our table were extremely helpful and courteous. We went back for breakfast the next day and had the most velvety potatoes. We found out the secret cooking technique.
We did not have a chance to enjoy the spa and the pool. Next time we shall.
Our check out was friendly, quick and easy with the lovely agents.
Oh, one more thing, I absent mindedly left my phone in the room and valet ran after us to return it. He said the room cleaner saw it and reacted quickly. A truly BIG thank you to your amazing staff.

We had stayed at the Las Alcobas in Mexico City two years ago and really enjoyed the experience. We live in San Francisco and wanted to get away but not get on a plane. So we chose St. Helena.

From the moment we pulled into the driveway, we felt we were in great hands. We were greeted by someone from the front desk, given our keys, maps and got a small walking tour of the property. There is no large formal lobby so this check in experience was unique, quick and friendly (I am terrible at remembering names so forgive the lack of specific identification).

The location of Las Alcobas is a short walk up Main Street from the town of St. Helena. When we weren't in town we ate 3 meals at the in house restaurant, The Acacia House (separate review). We had massages and used the fitness center. It being wet and cold we did not use the outdoor pool which otherwise looked beautiful.

It being the day before Christmas there was only one masseuse on duty so my wife and I had back to back 90 minute massages. They were both great. Possibly the best hotel massages we have ever had.

We had an upgraded room which was spacious, a nice flat screen tv and on the deck was an outdoor bathtub(which went unused) and a gas fire pit with chairs around it (which we did use and enjoyed). And at the risk of TMI, the bathroom has a toilet with a heated seat that one can raise and lower at the push of a button.

We look forward to going back to Las Alcobas in the not too far future.

Overall I had an excellent experience. However, with this type of property, I expect a certain level of attention to detail that I wouldn’t at other lower end properties. 1. Hard water build up on shower heads. This is super simple to fix, but mis-jetting nozzles and blocked nozzles show that the cleaning staff are not trained or expected to keep an eye out for this. 2. While the Dornbracht faucetry is very high quality, there was no consideration given to usability with the sinks chosen. There was barely enough clearance between the wall mounted faucet and the sink to even wash your hands. Not practical at all and a rookie mistake for pairing a vessel sink with a wall mounted faucet. 3. Recommend having motion activated ‘night lights’ to assist getting to the bathroom in the middle of the night without figuring out which button to push on the light switch panel and inadvertently turning on all the lights and waking your partner. Also recommend having a bathroom light switch in the bathroom to prevent light spillage from infiltrating the rest of the hotel room in the middle of the night.

Again, this is nit-picky, but something I would expect for a property of this reputation and quality.

The Las Alcobas is billed as a luxury resort, and I will say they have done everything they can to make an old dormitory into a nice hotel, but in the end, it is still an old dorm. The rooms felt like a dorm room with no closet space to hang long dresses or drawer space (3 smallish drawers total) to put folded items. There was no place for shoes either. Our room overlooked a vineyard.... and some condos who could clearly see into the room so privacy was also an issue. The shower never got hotter than lukewarm (verified by the hotel staff to be working properly) and we could hear the people above us walking around. There were high tech features all over the room but the buttons to the makeup room/shower toilet and general room were all in odd places and not in the rooms themselves, so it took 4 days of staying at the resort to semi-figure it out. No lobby or "common" area to lounge in that wasn't attached to the restaurant. the linens and bedding were also just so so (I could feel one of the mattress buttons through the mattress pad and sheet). The spa was great but overall, for the price, it wasn't a luxury experience.

The facility is very very nice. The location within walking distance to St Helena and all the vineyards is wonderful. Service, however, is NOT what one would expect from a 5 star property priced at this level.

We used WOH points so perhaps that meant we deserved (and should expect) a lower level of service, but if I’d paid $1,000 a night or more I’d be posting a one star review. For points we did get a great value, however.

Specific issues:
1. We bought a tour from the hotel concierges. We received no receipt or written confirmation. When we arrived we were told the concierges had “quit.” When we informed front desk we’d bought a tour from them but didn’t know where to go or what to do absolutely zero effort was made to help us. No apologies. We had to ask THREE times before the front desk staff finally got us basic information. Never a thing in writing and no receipt. Utterly unprofessional.

2. Housekeeping is good but slow and doesn’t respond to requests for service at specific times. The “make up
Room” light you can activate in your room (common at 5 star properties) does absolutely nothing. Even if you ask the front desk if they can make up your room in the next hour or so (again, a normal request/expectation at most five star properties) you’ll often be disappointed.

3. Room service orders while tasty were (more often than not) slightly incorrect or missing an item or instruction.

4. Bill was wrong (noticed at checkout but didn’t want to wait in line to complain) but also WOH members be careful as our points earned from stay were wildly off and incorrect. They owed us thousands more points than we initially got. When I called hotel they left me on hold for 10 minutes then came back and said they had no idea how to fix it and referred me to the national call center. Again - not five star service.

That said, room itself was gorgeous. Views marvelous. Food and drink mostly tasty. Pool area and pool attendant very great. We had a good time and found this a terrific use of Hyatt points. Will we return? Doubtful. Would we ever pay cash? Never.

We stayed at the Alila in Napa Valley for five nights this June. Given the level of service misses, I am forced to seriously question whether this property is worth the daily rate (or points) and should be rated as a Category 7. In general, I've received a higher quality of service at other Category 7 hotels I've stayed at (including the Park Hyatt Tokyo) and even many Category 4 and 5 hotels. When you consider that the price of the Alila is almost 3 - 4 times even that of the Park Hyatt Tokyo, one would expect service commensurate with that price point.

At the Park Hyatt Tokyo, I could think of none, service was perfect and staff paid attention to every single detail. At the Alila, things that I would normally let go were seemingly ignored and I got the impression that many of the staff were just not well trained to meet the needs of the clientele or the expectation of the service.

Here were a few service misses:

1. As a Globalist, there is a welcome amenity that is presented on the first day of stay. I never received anything, and the only reason I found out about this amenity was overhearing a conversation the front desk staff was having with a customer.

2. There was a “soft opening” of the spa, and we were never informed about it. Only when my wife saw the lights on in the spa during our stay did she go in and inquire. Ideally this would have been communicated to guests when they check in.

3. There appeared to be a great deal of confusion surrounding the self-park option. In light of COVID-19, my preference is to minimize the number of people who have access to my vehicle and personal items. I was asked by the valet throughout my stay to hand over the keys. There seemed to be a miscommunication between the management and valet that it took 2 or 3 communication attempts to set right.

4. As a Globalist, we are entitled to a 4 pm check out which was confirmed with the front desk. We were automatically checked out at 12 pm despite this assurance.

Mistakes do happen, but I think for the price point of this hotel, there are certain expectations, and I feel like those expectations were not met. Things that most people would normally let slide are quickly ignored when the base rate for a hotel approaches ~ $1,800/night and other hotels in the Hyatt chain do not seem to suffer from this level of service lapse.

I don't want the tone of this feedback to be overly negative. The rooms were in exceptionally good condition and the cleaning staff did an amazing job keeping things that way. I would also like to especially compliment the restaurant staff, they were exceptionally helpful, professional, prompt and friendly. The quality of the breakfast was also great.

I stayed here with a group of girls in February and we had a wonderful time. The property has stunning views from the rooms and the staff was incredibly accommodating. The resort is in a great location as you can walk into St. Helena and shop, eat, etc. The spa was wonderful as was the food. I highly recommend this place!

We were here for 4 nights - not long enough, we didn’t want to leave. The high floor and view of vineyards made the room, as did the excellent service. Liked that this hotel is within walking distance of lots of great restaurants and shops. We normally stay at the Fairmont in Sonoma for several nights around New Years (have for the last 10 years), but this was a really nice change and I think we will make a permanent switch.
The spa is amazing, we enjoyed massages and facials.
To nit pick-and think I can for 1000/night - The French press coffee machine is a bit of a pain to use and messy, especially if you would like more than 1 pot. A sink in the bar area would be a welcome addition. Next time will bring our own coffee maker. Amenities (shampoo and body wash) were not always replaced when room was cleaned but were when we notified front desk. Also the towels at the spa are average, and if you have big feet the spa shoes will not fit. Invest in some larger sized shoes for size 10 plus shoe size men.

I am all about this hotel. Fire pit and soaking tub on the patio. Push a button privacy screen stops out of the ceiling. Service excellent. Very clean and modern. Valet said he would have my truck waiting for me the next morning. It was. It was on, warmed up, defrosted, ready to drive away. Amazing experience all the way around. Can hardly wait to stay there again.

Just got back from a stay at Alila. It was wonderful. I love that it's Adults Only hence very quiet and relaxing. We got a 2 queen room facing the vineyards with the nice balcony with couches, fire pit, chairs etc. The room was spacious. Our favorite thing was the 2 separate bathrooms-one with an amazing toilet and the other with tub, shower, sink etc.. We are Hyatt Globalists so arrived at noon hoping to check in early but our room wasn't ready. We were able to shower in the spa and sit by the pool. Very much appreciated. Our room was ready by 3. The reason I didn't give this restaurant a 5 star was the restaurant. It was very disappointing. It took forever for someone to take our order. It took forever for someone to get our coffee and the french press coffee was horrible tasting with grounds in it. We ordered the pastry basket and it was horrible with 3 little tiny finger pastries that were terrible. This was surprising what with all the good bakeries in St. Helena and the area. I ordered eggs with cheese and there was no cheese. Needed more water but the waiter never really came back until the end. The pool was great but was missing a jacuzzi. Loved the pool bar that was open on the weekend. Also you can get food service by the pool which was nice. The employees were amazing-from the check in people to the valets, spa people etc.. Always there to help. Like other have mentioned, the buildings of the hotel and the layout is strange. There's a victorian house in front where you check in and houses the restaurant. Then a couple big farmhouses and then the rooms overlooking Beringer vineyard. It was only a 15 minute walk to town so the location can't be beat and St. Helena is adorable. I'd give the hotel itself a 5 star but with the restaurant, only a 4 1/2 star. Hopefully that will improve. We'll see when we come back in October.
