We love staying at Palihouse House SB! This was our second stay, and just as wonderful, as the first. The atmosphere, location, and very friendly staff, are consistently, wonderful. The front desk and restaurant, employees, , were all very kind, and went above and beyond to help us. We can't wait to return! Thank you, Palihouse!

My husband and I loved our two night stay at the Spanish Garden Inn during our short Babymoon getaway to Santa Barbara. We booked well in advance and pre-paid, giving us what we felt was an extremely reasonable price for this charming inn, and were pleased to find out upon check in that we we upgraded to a room with a large soaking tub. We enjoyed the amenities including fresh fruit and cookies in the lobby, a coffee/tea bar available all day and lemonade in the afternoon, and a fairly extensive continental breakfast selection including cheese, dried fruit, pastries and bread, cereal, oatmeal, and made to order fruit smoothies and eggs. We even took advantage of the complimentary bikes that were available to do a morning ride to the beach. They also offered a wine and cheese hour each evening which looked nice, however we didn’t personally take advantage of this since neither of us were drinking. Every employee we encountered at the desk was extremely warm and welcoming. The Inn is tucked just a few blocks off the main State St and downtown shopping/dining area in a very peaceful location, yet was within a walkable distance of everything we wanted to do downtown, including about a 20 minute walk to Stearns Wharf and the oceanfront. We would stay here again and recommend this hotel in a heartbeat.

We stayed here for our wedding weekend and all the staff—from the folks at the front desk to the bartenders to the housekeeping—helped make our stay comfortable. We stayed in both the Deluxe Studio in room 20 and Deluxe King in room 13, and both were clean, tastefully decorated, and overall fantastic. Bath products were high quality and the bathroom in particular was spotless. Food menu is pared down to focus on quality and every single thing we ordered was delicious. Complimentary underground parking plus fairly abundant street parking. Guests have access to an honor bar, and the hotel hosts a complimentary happy hour on the weekends as well. Guests can make requests via the room phone but can also do so via smartphones/computers, which is a smart modern touch. My one gripe is that it is quite pricey, but that comes with the territory of a boutique experience with 24 rooms.

This is the second Palihouse I’ve stayed at, with the first being on Melrose in LA. They’re both aged properties that got a hipster facelift but no substantial improvement to the guest experience.

At the Santa Barbara location,
the rooms have no insulation so everything is SO very loud. We couldn’t sleep late due to all the vacuuming and cleaning in the morning.

Dining was disappointing. The dine-in menu was very limited, in both scope and hours of availability. The bar was only open for one of the 3 nights we stayed and the drinks were... meh. The servers were nice enough, but overall it was pretty dead and didn’t fit the trendy vibe advertised online.

Our suite was... fine. I liked that it had a fridge and microwave (though no place to do dishes). Bed and pillows were comfortable. Annoyingly, the room has very few electrical outlets and none by the bed. This made it inconvenient to charge our gadgets in the Zoom era.

Location was... okay. A ~10 minute walk gets you to State street, full of restaurants and activities. There’s no Palihouse concierge to give personal suggestions beyond the few spots listed on their website (I received a curt response to my email asking for such). But locals are pretty nice and we got a lot of recommendations by talking to offsite restaurant servers and other diners out and about.

Overall, if we come back to Santa Barbara, we’ll skip Palihouse. Given the cost, I’d prefer a property that was either closer to the water, more modern, or so cool and charming that I’d miss neither of the above.

Dear ABayAreaNative, Thank you for your review of Palihouse Santa Barbara. I'm very sorry to hear that these were your experiences during your stay with us. Admittedly interior and exterior deep cleaning is definitely a main focus of our Housekeeping team, but I apologize you were disturbed at some point and were unable to enjoy our Italian linens and comfortable double-pillowtop beds longer than planned. We have several Santa Barbara natives on our Front Desk team. They're each very knowledgeable on all things Santa Barbara. I wish we were able to serve you better with regards to making more recommendations to your liking. We would love to have you back with us in the hopes that we can change your perspective of Palihouse Santa Barbara; the newest luxury boutique hotel in the city. Cheers, Joseph Lewis

We had the best stay here. The hotel is beautiful (and smells amazing - I meant to ask what the fragrance was, but forgot) and the staff is incredibly kind and attentive. I cannot say enough good things about Fabian. He was fantastic and so quick to help us with anything and everything we needed. Location was great - walking distance to everything we wanted to do.

The room was so nice. Really loved the decor, the high ceilings, the fireplace and the huge bathroom with so many good amenities. Everything was spotless and we really appreciated the individual packs of PPE gear - we’ve stayed at quite a few hotels on our road trip and this is first time we got anything like that.

We really enjoyed the hotel’s happy hour. Good selection of beer and wine and so nice to enjoy them in the peaceful courtyard surrounded by flowers and the sound of a trickling fountain. Breakfast was really good as well and delivered right on time as requested. The quiches were delicious! We absolutely loved our stay and were sad to have to leave; we cannot wait to return!

This is a historic building whose rooms feel state of the art circa 1985, which is probably the last time they had a refresh. Santa Barbara is expensive in general but this property is overpriced for what it is. There is a parking garage, but it doesn't have enough spaces to accommodate a full house so we just left our car there as we had the last space. If you will need to use your vehicle, keep this in mind. The Wifi is terrible in room and judging by the number of guests using their laptops in the public spaces, one would think fixing it would be a priority. The staff are all very friendly and seem to enjoy working here, just realize this is a dated historic inn, not a full service hotel before you book and there is nothing luxurious about this property other than the price. Absurd "resort" fee on top of room rate includes parking (if you are lucky enough to find a space) and basic amenities which should just be included in the price. This was not mentioned at check in, but appeared on the bill! Given that parking and "internet access" are part of this fee it is especially insulting. "Hip" instagram obsessed types who have no idea what a luxury hotel is will love this place, that appears to be the demographic they cater to at these properties (think Ace Hotel only with terrible wifi). If you are unfortunate enough to be staying here, do not get a room facing the courtyard, loud, obnoxious guests lingered here after happy hour until 10pm, not conducive to relaxing at all.

We had booked a one night stay as we couldn’t schedule around the Rosewood Miramar Beach property. I’m any event it was a poor experience to say the least. We got there at 4:30 and the cleaning staff was literally walking out of our room as we entered. The room itself was a good size and a nice sitting area. Had booked a large balcony room because we like to sleep with fresh air. The aesthetic of the room was not great. We paid $800 a night for this room and look at the picture of the bathroom sink. It’s almost as if I was staying in grandma’s house in Eastern Europe. The balcony also became an issue as most of not all the rooms face the pool courtyard or 2nd courtyard. The bar below closed at 10 pm but people were outside talking loudly in the courtyard passed 11 pm. Called the front desk to complain and nothing seemed to have been done as the noise continued unabated. There goes sleeping with open windows and fresh air. Then the bathroom sink was completely clogged in the evening and had to call maintenance who came after 10 pm and couldn’t really fix the issue. I told him to have management call me but never heard a follow up. Same with the front desk. No call from management that evening or the next morning before our departure. So basically a complete disaster in our view considering the room price and level of service expected. We will never visit this property again.

The Spanish Garden Inn is conveniently located near State Street, which runs through the downtown district. The hotel is beautiful and the COVID-19 protocols made me feel very safe, which made this trip to Santa Barbara enjoyable. This is our fourth time staying here and we will most certainly come back.

A cheap make-over in a good part of the city — advertised as luxury boutique hotel is just a slighted upgraded Holiday Inn with exorbitant prices. No service — must ask or pay for everything including any attempt to clean your room, get water or perhaps breakfast at 7:30 AM. Changed rooms three times because of either no a/c or no wifi – no hotel staff to help in any way. Packed and unpacked 3 times climbing up and down stairs. Do no ask for any restaurant recommendations since the reception clerk is a vegan and I guess he thought we wanted him to join us. Did I mention they tried to rip us off with a $600 a night charge — actually $300 online.

Dear Sharon And Davi... S, Thank you for your review of Palihouse Santa Barbara, I'm truly sorry to hear that your comments are what you feel your experience was during your stay. Our Front Desk team members are each native of Santa Barbara are usually extremely knowledgeable on all things Santa Barbara, including the best dining local options listed in our Neighborhood Guide. I regret that the dining suggestions made to you were not of your liking. Due to CDC and state recommended health and safety guidelines; we don't enter our guest's rooms without their express consent and request for housekeeping services or deliveries. I'm sorry if this was not better explained during your arrival. I sincerely apologize for the maintenance issue you experienced with the AC unit within your initially checked-in guestroom. Unfortunately, sudden equipment failures are sometimes beyond any hotel's control. Concerning your WiFi signal issue; we've recently installed upgraded WiFi routers in two rear areas of our property that were experiencing slightly slower signal and download speeds. Please know that our guest services team members did everything within their power to address each of these issues during your stay. This included showing you two different room-type options to move to, offering you private access to our Club Room for your next morning Zoom meeting, complimentary Bar beverages, as well as reducing your room rate and tax from your originally booked nightly amount by 50% due to the unforeseen maintenance challenges. We would like the opportunity to have you back with us again. I can assure you that you'll feel differently about your next stay experience. Best regards, Joseph Lewis | House Manager

So this is a newly open location for Palihouse I have stayed at a few of their locations which is why I choose this but it was a very uncomfortable stay for me. I will say the girl at front desk was very sweet but they need to train these guys better no offer of Wifi password no real ability to recommend anything. The room and grounds are great but it ends there. Literally NO WIFI in my room had to take a zoom meeting in my car. NO AC working and they tried but nothing. Had to sleep with windows open all night and they pump loud music all around the outside till 9pm and courtyard all light up so had to tie a t-shirt around my eyes and that only got me about 4 hours of sleep. You cannot use the phone in the room to reach front desk does not work. No bathmat for the bath which was nice. I slipped getting out though. Till they work out these issues I would stay elsewhere if you wish to sleep be comfortable and work lol.

The other estimates are about right. If you walk straight down the street it is a lovely residential neighborhood or you can go a couple of blocks over and go through downtown (shops, restaurants, etc.). Either way it is a pleasant walk but it will take 20-30 min depending on your pace.
