El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel in Santa Barbara, is celebrated for providing a memorable experience that many guests find justifies the expense. The hotel's enchanting ambiance, luxury amenities, and splendid grounds paired with serene pools and exceptional dining contribute to its charm, despite occasional service hiccups. Its tranquil location offers stunning views, enhancing the appeal. Spacious and uniquely designed rooms with luxe amenities are a highlight, although housekeeping can be inconsistent. The overall atmosphere is one of indulgence, marked by details like heated floors and live music, with cleanliness being a strong suit, but service speed does draw some criticism.

We loved the setting and small size of this resort. It is spread out on a landscaped hillside overlooking the ocean with a collection of one and two story attractive Spanish and craftsman styled bungalows acting as your home while in residence. This setup created a quiet and charming atmosphere which was ideal for obtaining a very relaxing stay.

We really liked and enjoyed our Deluxe King room that was more spacious than anticipated. Features included two club chairs in front of a gas fireplace, two doors to a small private covered balcony overlooking a green space, and a large luxury bathroom with two sinks, separate shower, water closet, large soaking tub, and heated floor. We also loved that the room had three exposures giving us morning and afternoon sunshine. It should be noted, however, that the unique layout and style of this resort means that few rooms are the same in size, location, and level of privacy and light.

We enjoyed two tasty meals at the hotel restaurant, which has a large outdoor terrace area overlooking the ocean in addition to an elegant interior room. The restaurant is housed in a charming low key manor house that is also the location of the hotel reception, small bar, spa, some meeting space, and a ballroom.

I really enjoyed swimming laps in the large infinity edged pool that overlooks downtown Santa Barbara and the ocean. There are plenty of comfortable lounge chairs around the pool but there is no hot tub if that is important to you. The hotel gym is nice with a wall of windows looking out to a covered terrace, but I wished it had two or three more fitness machines so I could have gotten a full workout.

The staff of this hotel really stood out, especially since this site is full of complaints these days about poor service. Everyone here was friendly, professional, and well trained to help guests and insure that they had a carefree stay. We also appreciated that the entire team was fully masked.

The hillside location in the middle of a nice residential neighborhood may seem remote for some but we embraced it and the local winding roads took us back to memories of trips on the “Amalfi coast” but with a lot less stress driving on them. The hotel will drive you into town but we enjoyed a great walk in one day that took about a half hour to reach State Street passing Santa Barbara’s great architecture along the way. Parking was $40 when we stayed and there is no stand alone resort fee which is nice not to have to pay for once.

We brought our company Holiday Party to El Encanto this year and it was flawless from start to finish. They offered our members a very competitive room rate to stay the night and the rooms were simply breathtaking. The service was impeccable from the moment you pulled into valet to the elegant touches in the room. We will back for many years to come. Thank you.

We just returned from our second trip to El Encanto, and it is officially our new "place" to go. It is so charming and quiet, and every staff member we've dealt with has been sincere, friendly, and helpful.

They accept pets so it was also very nice to bring our pup with us both visits. She enjoyed her time and was treated so well by everyone, including our waiter at the restaurant who brought a dog bed over for her during breakfast!

Our only criticisms are:

1) it's annoying that they charge a valet fee when there is no other option but valet (no on-street parking or parking lot)

2) the pet fee has increased considerably in the past year (from $40 a stay to $150 a stay)

3) the dining room dinner and lunch menus could use better options - after a so-so dinner there last time, this time we ordered delivery from a different restaurant in Montecito instead

4) the "basic" rooms are a bit dark and bland but the rooms with a terrace/fireplace, etc. are incredible. Definitely upgrade if you go.

5) the pool is small (which we love) but some guests dominate the space. Especially during Covid, it's shocking how selfish people can be. I think the hotel should consider a 3 hour time limit or something (similar to what restaurants are doing) because otherwise there is a chance you won't get to swim. For over $1000 a night that feels unacceptable.

6) additionally, we have been to the pool during times when people absolutely let their children run wild there. Scooters in the pool, back flips into the pool, screaming at the top of their lungs, splashing other guests. I am not opposed to kids having fun and I actually really love kid friendly places but since we can't count on parents to monitor, I wish the hotel would do a better job of making sure other guests have a nice experience also.

We stayed at the El Encanto for three nights in January. Everything about our stay was exquisite. We were greeted warmly, shown to a very comfortable room, and then dined on the covered terrace overlooking a drop dead gorgeous view of the ocean. Service was exemplary in all respects. The grounds are immaculately maintained, and the pool area very inviting and comfortable. The exercise facilities were well appointed and very clean. The gentlemen who provided the valet service were prompt and very friendly. We dined in the restaurant every day, and the food was always good, and the service excellent. There's really nothing negative I can say about this place, and can't wait to return!

Overall, this a relaxing, quiet place to escape the current stress of our world. With no interior hallways and rooms spread out in a number of small buildings, your health concerns will be allayed here. The rooms here are luxurious - complete with heated bathroom floors, soft robes, and comfortable bedding. The hotel staff are extremely polite and attentive as no detail gets overlooked to ensure your comfort. Dining on the Terrace is appropriately distanced with the food choices tasty and well prepared. The grounds are well maintained and beautifully landscaped. The pool area is outstanding and has priceless views out toward the ocean.

We enjoyed superlative service on the property. I booked three rooms all were in top shape - housekeeping was grand and the valets on the property exceeded expectations. We enjoyed breakfast, lunch, dinner and room service on the property. The food was excellent -but service was slow on room service and at dinner. We were in Santa Barbara for my son's wedding and the hotel provided exactly what we need for the event.

My room was on the small side, but I had patio that did have an ocean view, my ding is for the bathroom, as it was a shower/tub combo, so if an older person had my room it might have been difficult to maneuver into the shower, also I do agree with other reviews that the water pressure isn't great, in addition my closet was in the bathroom, after taking a steaming shower i felt my clothes were damp.

Breakfast was very bland and nothing special, I did order pancakes, but pancakes at my local Bristol Farms were far more tasty.

Dinner was much better.

The grounds are very well manicured.

Not sure why, when I called the room was $900, when my friend called it was $1,500 and we called within a day or two, not sure why the discrepancy in pricing as the hotel was not at capacity

I was here for one night.

Our first family trip with a 4-month old was always bound to be a challenge, but El Encanto was a gorgeous backdrop that reminded us of Italy and the staff provided friendly and excellent service that felt representative of a 5-star resort to make our first trip as comfortable as possible. Thanks to Amex Platinum and manager Erin, we were upgraded to a larger room with a patio terrace that allowed us to still enjoy room service dinners outside after the baby went down when we didn't opt for an early dinner at the restaurant. The menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner vary enough that we didn't get bored, though we did go into town for a few meals to mix it up.

I love that this location is in the neighborhood, part way up the mountain to give you the sweeping views as opposed to beach-side. We were certainly not the only young family visiting, which was a relief to not stick out with a baby in tow!

We were provided a crib, baby blanket, baby soaps and a little hummingbird stuffed animal for the baby. They also provide a pillow menu that you can select from! The rooms have blackout curtains and was large enough to tuck her into a corner, and the property is immaculately landscaped with plenty of walking paths to enjoy. We specifically looked for a hotel that we would be happy to stay put at and El Encanto met all our expectations.

First time here was great, this was the second time and notably worse....granted, there was construction which is acceptable by most standards. The staff were generally nice but there was one particularly rude manager. I merely asked if they had an HDMI cord and the response was not pleasant. For the amount of money we paid and the advertised quality of the hotel, it marred my view of the facility. A shame. In addition, the in room dining was not quite as delightful as the first time around, the food options decreased and were less tasty. In the hotel's defense, Covid has been difficult to cope with in regards to maintaining quality and quantity. Regardless, Santa Barbara is an amazing place to visit regardless of where one stays; it was a great location to relax in during the uncertainty of things.

When we have a special occasion to celebrate and dine in the Santa Barbara area, our top choices are; El Encanto, The Biltmore Four Seasons, Angel Oak at Bacara and tentatively to be opened soon after serious damage from the fires and floods, The Stonehouse at San Ysidro Ranch. These all have incredible atmospheres with upscale decor, the best servers, wine lists and wine service and chefs. All are expensive. If I were to pick one on these, it would be The Stonehouse, but I'm not sure when they will re-open. They are close to doing so. There are 2 excellent Italian restaurants that I love, Olio y Lemone and Ca Dario, but for an extra special occasion, the ones I mention above are a step up in class for the complete dining experience.

Dear LisanneMB, Delighted you enjoyed our properties in Italy, there is nothing like luxuriating poolside at Hotel Caruso unless you are at Belmond El Encanto. Our pool is a zero-edge pool that is saline based and free of chlorine and heated so anytime of year is a grand time to enjoy the pool and Santa Barbara weather. February can have some rain though, this year we are in a drought so not much rain but we may next year. If there is no rain we typically have 70 degree (Farenheit) weather and sunny skies. While the Italian properties are rich with European history and architectural culture, Santa Barbara is rich with Spanish colonial influences with Mission style buildings featuring white stucco walls and red tiled roofs as well as an homage to early California architecture of the Craftsman style bungalows. All of our units are bungalows that are in the style of a duplex or triplex building and residential in style and feel. Charming and quaint atop the hillside of the American Riviera yet close enough to downtown should adventure spur a desire for some nightlife or perhaps a daytrip to wine country or excitement with watersports like kayaking, paddleboarding or jet skiing. Please feel free to contact me directly if I may be of further assistance. Very best, Stella Ahn Executive Assistant Manager 805.845.5800

Good evening Carol, The beach is about 5 miles away from the property and you have a few options to make it down to the surf and sand. Option 1: Rent our electric bicycles to get down and use the motor to get back to property. Option 2: Book the guest courtesy vehicle which can drop you off at Leadbetter or East Beach and then call to have them pick you back up. Option 3: If you are driving we can provide directions. Hope this helps and please feel free to contact our concierge department at 805.845.5800. Best wishes, Stella Ahn Executive Assistant Manager
