The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is nestled in a locale celebrated for its scenic beauty and historical significance, offering a stay that many find conveniently close to attractions. While the hotel's atmosphere is often described as charming with enjoyable amenities like fireplaces and live music, some guests feel that parts of the property could benefit from rejuvenation. The service quality and room conditions receive mixed reactions, ranging from praise for spaciousness and upkeep to criticism over outdated decor and noise disturbances. Travelers are fond of the spa and pools but are wary of the extra charges and the value proposition, as hidden fees seem to mar the overall experience.

We had an incredible experience at the Fairmont Sonoma. We were immediately greeted by friendly and helpful staff on arrival. Food options were great within the hotel. Get the avocado toast for breakfast- best I've ever had. Proximity to vineyards and restaurants was a big plus. Recommend checking out their very unique spa with thermal baths. Highly recommend this place and hope to be back here again.

Teitzah gives the BEST massage! And I love everything about the spa and the surrounding pools. The women's locker room comes equipped with all that you could need including the "Apricots and Cream" body lotion which I loved so much I bought some on the way out in the gift shop.

I visited for a day at the spa. It was a cold, rainy day, but that didn't stop me from having a wonderful and relaxing experience. I booked the stress recovery massage with Teitzah and it was the best massage treatment I've had to date! She was kind, professional, and very intentional. I appreciate how hard the facility staff works throughout the day to keep the whole spa clean and the guests' needs looked after. I will say that the locker rooms could use an update, especially the shower and bathroom stalls. Will definitely be back!

Our experience was very underwhelming. We stayed in room 108 during our 3 night stay and every morning at 6:00am we were woken by a garbage/recycling truck picking up garbage. The first morning when we were woken up from it we thought it was unfortunate it but at least it wouldn't happen again but then it happened the next morning and the morning after that. Also besides the location, room 108 wasn't very nice. All the windows were covered in a frosted film so you couldn't see outside to anything.
Another big disappointment was that when we booked the hotel at the beginning of January no where did it say that the pool would be drained and under construction. We were sadly disappointed when we walked out to go to the pool bar and told that it and the pool would be closed for our stay. My husband and I have stayed at many different Fairmont's and especially like staying on the gold floor so this hotel stay was quite a disappointment. We were underwhelmed by our room last year but we usually don't spend that much time in the room anyways so we decided to book the Fairmont again because we love all the jasmine that is planted all around the property and the taco truck across the street that is open late at night.

The positives are the lovely gardens filled with jasmine and the taco truck located across the street that is open late nights.

Started off well in that the welcome from the valet parking chap and Brian the luggage man was great, the reception staff were charming, the glass of fizz was an unexpected treat as was the complimentary bottle of fizz and white wine in the room. Also loved the fact that water bottles were provided every day.
The wine tasting in the lobby was also a nice touch and the lady serving delightful. The bar man and F&B manager were also delightful as was Cynthia the server by the pool. We didn’t use the spa so can’t comment on that but we were surprised you still have to pay to use it as a hotel guest.
Our room was well equipped and bed very comfortable.
Lastly the gardens were lovely with lots of seating areas and well kept.
But….. the hotel exterior is very tired, as are the pool and the corridors to the rooms. The Fairmont rooms are very small and most surprising of all, if you have a late flight (there is no option to have a late checkout beyond midday) there is no shower by the pool at all, and nowhere inside the hotel to shower after a day by the pool, unless you pay $49 each for a day pass to the spa.
Having travelled extensively in the US and Europe I have never come across a hotel that does not offer a late checkout showering facility, especially not in one that purports to be 5 star.
Also although the pool service on our first day was great, it was hopeless on our second day, our lunch (2 salads) took over 45 minutes to arrive and then one was wrong. Sadly, it appeared that a small corporate event in the room by the pool took everyone’s attention and so (paying) hotel guests were ignored. Not impressed and would certainly not recommend the Fairmont to our travel agent or anyone else for that matter. Shame as it got a lot right.

Dear Mookins64, I am sorry to hear that there was some misses during your last stay and you have my upmost apologies for this. I am glad to hear the stay started off well, but sorry that it was diminished later in the stay. Our main building was built in 1927, so the entry level room type is indeed small. In regards to late checkout, we do offer until 1pm, but beyond that would require an additional nights booking as we would not be able to sell the hotel. Being in wine country all our guests want to check in early and all want to check in late. We do however happily provide access to shower in the spa after your check out and do have a shower at the resort pool for rinsing off. I am sorry these options were not provided to you. In regards to the 'small corporate event', these would have been hotel guests as well as we do have companies who bring their team to visit with us often. I am sorry that your pool service on the 2nd day was subpar and that you felt the other guests took up the attention as our goal is to care for all of our guests equally. I am hopeful we can connect so I can more personally apologize to you as I would be keen to do so and discuss how we can make this up to you and show you what our hospitality heart is truly about. If you have time to reach out to me I am here and reachable at anytime. Best regards, Justin Wilson Director of Operations Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

To start my birthday celebration this year we visited the Fairmont Sonoma where we had a mixed experience. While the surrounding wine country and the staff were both exceptional, we found that the facilities on property felt old and run down. The furniture gave a distinct “Best Western” vibe and some areas like the spa left much to be desired. For the price we paid at the spa we didn’t expect to see rusted out vents full of lint in several areas, nor did we expect our $700 cabana would have a table propped up by wadded paper and a tv you could only use with dingy headphones. Overall, I would not choose to stay here again unless the property receives substantial updating and renovation.

We have been here multiple times over many years with conferences, and have always enjoyed our stay. But it has been a few years. The room we just stayed in was fine, still had amenities like coffee, glass glasses, and a small frig, but we were charged a "resort fee" of $60 per day that covered almost nothing, a new self park fee of $17/day (there is no other way to get there), and to use the always nearly empty spa was now $100/day (probably not including taxes) per person. We used to use the spa, even bringing our kids there, and it seems that 30 people at $30 a day would make a lot more sense than 2 at $100 a day. There is also the feeling that one is being nickel and dimed to death. The psychology of sales is such that buyers and sellers should both walk away feeling good about the transaction. But instead of accepting and paying the expensive room rates and then having reasonable amenities being included we felt price gouged at every turn. So the $500 for the room did not include taxes, "resort fees", self parking, or anything else. Perhaps like Vegas the Sonoma Mission Inn no longer cares about repeat business and is confident that new wedding parties will keep them afloat.

Hello, and thank you so kindly for your review about your recent stay. We are so sorry to hear that you did not feel there was value in your stay, and I wanted to take a quick moment to quickly clarify a few things. It is our goal to ensure all of our guests feel that they are informed of the amazing offerings at our resort. The nightly resort fee of $59 is actually valued at over twice this amount, and includes incredible amenities such as a local bottle of wine, daily fitness classes, daily wine tasting, shuttle service to Sonoma Plaza, bike rental and so much more! Additionally, the spa fee for resort guests of $69 grants you access to the geothermal waters at Fairmont Spa, including the bathing ritual at the Bathhouse, and this fee is waived if you book a spa treatment. This space is an adults-only retreat to allow for ultimate relaxation. I hope that this helps to clarify a few things. We want to ensure that each guest feels value in their stay, and we truly appreciate your feedback and your loyalty. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Poor communication amongst front desk staff. We were charged additional fees for services that we were not notified were additional. Pool was too cold to use, had to pay extra to use the hot tub. Housekeeping took care of our room early in the day then another housekeeper was found in our room in the late evening.?

We were at the Fairmont Sonoma for a family wedding with many rooms booked. I cannot complain about our room but many of the rooms our family and friends had could use an upgrading. On the morning of the wedding, being very busy, we asked that our room could be serviced after we left in the early afternoon. We were assured it would be and were disappointed when we returned after a joyous night out to an unmade room. The next morning the family had booked a room in the restaurant for a brunch. After what was a rather long wait for food, some were served a very tasty but barely luke warm meal. I think we were all glad to get on with our days and carried on. We were shocked that some of our party had been locked out of the rooms due to it being somewhat past check out. I have never encountered this anywhere in my travels.

I am also not one that likes to be nickled and dimed for extras. Service me to death and charge me up front, I will pay. I was surprised when I was charged $39 to have the luggage brought to my room. It made me somewhat regret giving the porter a tip although I wonder what the porter sees of that $39.

It is not often that I am glad to be moving to my next destination. I usually bask in the experience of staying at such a "renown" place and leave with the expectation of coming back soon. Certainly not the case here. Start the car. I'm outa here.

The massage was good, and the spa experience itself is in need of some refinement. Firstly, people should not be allowed to bring their mobile phones into a spa. There were numerous people chatting on the phone, texting, even IN THE SAUNA. Off putting to be in a place that is meant for relaxation with all the regular buzz of being in the real world. Also, lots of LOUD voices, no one monitoring the sound and experience for other guests. For the pricetag of this spa, I'd expect a bit more monitoring and a bit more rigor around the reasons people go to spas. It is to relax. With people yelling at one another, loud voices and cell phones, it felt no different than sitting in a bar or a hotel lobby.

the gym area is located near the spa. it is an excellent facility that provides a spacious, well-lit, and well-equipped environment for fitness enthusiasts. The inclusion of Peloton bikes, ellipticals, treadmills, weights, a rowing bar, and a bench ensures that there are options for everyone. I particularly appreciated the ample natural lighting in the gym due to the large windows. It creates a refreshing and energizing atmosphere, making it a joy to exercise there. Natural light is known to boost mood and motivation, and it's certainly a significant asset for this gym. hope this helps, i'll try to post photos of the gym.

How strict are the mask mandates at the resort and Spa?
Answer from EJROE
Berkeley, California13 contributions3 helpful votes
As per Sonoma County, mask wearing is still required in all indoor public spaces, unless you are actively eating and drinking, or it’s in an indoor wet area like a locker room and our spa bathhouse. Masks aren’t required to be worn when outside on the resort grounds or at or while in the resort pools. However, if you feel more comfortable wearing a mask while out doors or relaxing around the pools, that’s fine by us too. I trust this is helpful and we are available to answer any questions or thoughts. Regards, Edward Roe General Manager Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa
