My wife and I recently spent four nights at the Chaney House - here are our take-aways:

-This is an upscale Bed & Breakfast located approximately 5 miles South of Tahoe City. There are four rooms in the home for guests. We stayed in the "Russell Room", which we recommend given the following: it is upstairs, has a king size bed, and is quite spacious.
-The home is run by Gary and Lori Chaney, which are a nice couple who make you feel at home. They put out wine, cheese, and salami each night for the guests enjoyment. They also have nice chocalates in the living room (which were amazingly replaced each time after my wife and I feasted on them!).
-The home is a more quiet option versus hotels in Tahoe City. This would not be a good option, IMHO, for folks with children.
-As I mentioned, the couple goes out of their way to give the guests a great experience. We had a couple problems when we were there but the Chaney's went out of their way to make things right.
-Lori makes an amazing breakfast, with ample coffee, fruit, and various souffles. She made a noteworthy fruit parfait for one breakfast (delicious!).
-Gary knows the area so well and goes out of his way to share his knowledge with you. Please do consult him if you are not sure what you want to do. He was kind enough to relate various beach options to us - as a result, we ended up at the fabulous Meeks Bay beach (which had wonderful white sand, a snack bar, easy access, and a huge shady tree - an interesting combination!).
-The house features beautiful stone walls, a patio, a small beach (fairly rocky but ok for short swims), as well as a dock that is very useful for star gazing. The Chaney's provide beach towels and blankets (to keep warm when star gazing).
-Value was reasonable for the quality - we paid around $235 a night.

After travelling for approximately 7 hours from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe, we were greeted at Chaney House by Gary and Lori, an extremely friendly couple who immediately made us feel right at home. It was an instant reminder of why B&Bs can offer a much more welcoming and personal experience than any hotel. It definitely felt more like we were staying with relatives rather than strangers!

We stayed in the Russell suite which was cosy, had a huge bed and had a view (if you crouch down!) of the lake. The only slight negatives were that access was only up through a spiral staircase which was tricky with a larger suitcase, so if you’re travelling with a lot of stuff I would advise one of the other rooms. Also if you’re much taller than 5’8” you might struggle with the low shower head.

The location on the west shore was perfect, it’s within easy reach of some fine walks and quiet beaches and there are lots of good dining options nearby. We were very impressed with the Sunnyside restaurant in Tahoe City (5 min drive away) and the Swiss restaurant that’s within 10 minutes walk.

Breakfasts were typically a fruit course followed by a help-yourself selection of pastry / loaf cake and an egg course. While some of the Mexican-style egg dishes were not to our taste (although it was nice to try something different!) they were cooked very well by Lori and there was plenty of food to fill up on. In the afternoon there’s complementary cheese and wine, which was a great time to relax outside under the patio heater chatting to Gary, Lori and the other guests.

Absolute quintessential Tahoe wintertime B&B. Stayed here in January+March 2007 and fell in love with this place. This places oozes character and Gary/Lori are so welcoming, you feel you are staying with family you actually like. Cute stone house right on the lake with a great common area that has high ceilings and a grand stone fireplace w/roaring fire. great location to all restaurants and ski resorts in tahoe. Breakfast is included in the rate and is very solid, love the artichoke eggs and bananas foster. This will be our go to place for the upcoming ski season 07/08.

We booked Chaney House for a week on the basis of the good reviews on trip advisor. This is the first time we have ever arrived and left accommodation within 20mins, even though this meant forfeiting half of our payment.
This is a B and B in the old fashioned sense. The house is the home of an elderly couple and the interior and decor reflects this. We had driven through snow to get there and were cold on arrival. There was a fire in the sitting room but our room was cold. Warming up meant sitting with the Chaneys in their living room. There were no other guests although they expected a neighbour to arrive later. There are no coffee/ tea making facilities in the room and no tv or fridge. The TVs is shared with the Chaneys in their sitting room. Entrance to our room was by a staircase off the Chaneys' sitting room.
I appreciate that some people may like this arrangement but we need a bit more personal space and struggled to cope with the mock gothic decor and this amount of socialising with people we did not know.
All in all this was a huge disappointment and marred the start of our stay in Tahoe. In addition to the loss of a significant amount of money we also left with nowhere to go and had to reorganise our holiday at short notice.

We have stayed here twice (once in 1998 and once in 2001) and will return. Gary and Lori are simply exceptional. They are very very welcoming and accomodating, as well as helpful with dinner reservations as well as ski recommendations. The house is spectacular, with a huge woodburning fireplace. The evening refreshments offer a chance to meet with the other guests as well as chat with Lori and Gary. We have stayed in the honeymoon hideaway during both our stays, and of couse love it for the privacy and convenience. The breakfasts are tasty, served in the dining room or on the outdoor patio (possible in winter time as well as summer.) Highly recommend.

This little gem of a place we booked fairly last minute, but were lucky to do so as a lot of their guests unsurprisingly keep coming back and book well in advance. It's a beautiful stone house on the shores of lake tahoe with their own pier which guests are welcome to use and they even provide big fluffy towels for your swim. The welcome is so warm and friendly. The hosts cannot do enough for you and are real characters with some hilarious stories to tell. The room was charming and one of the comfiest beds of our trip. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to be back. It would be a great place in winter being just a few minutes from the ski fields.

I highly recommend a stay at the Chaney House on your next visit to Lake Tahoe. The stone house is stunning and the rooms lovely. The innkeepers are very warm & friendly and sunning on their private dock is a must if you are visiting before the snows come.

Quaint & Quirky B&B - Generous Hosts(5pm Wine, Nibbles & Chat with Hosts & Other Guests) - Everything one could require & Very Clean. Only Comment I would make is the Bed Linen could do with Updating(Sheets seen better days).
The Host was required to cater for a Vegetarian in Our Party & So All Guests found themselves having to partake of the same Menu, which was DELICIOUS on all 3 Mornings - it's Amazing how Versatile eggs can be!!
Tahoe itself is Simply STUNNING - hope to frequent this bit of Paradise again one day
Thank You SO Much Chaney House for Your Hospitality & Permitting Us into Your Lovely Home :-)

we have been to many b&b- also on our gowest roadtrip, and believe me when i say: the chaney house is excellent. Better is quite impossible. Gery and Lori are lovely, nice, helpfull and funny. And thei house feels just like home. We stayed 3 nights at the Russell's Suite and enjoyed every minute of it. In the evening there is wine and cheese and the guests sit together and talk. Gery knows everything about the region and has many things to tell. In the morning we had breakfast outside: Lori is a great cook. There is also a private pier where we watched the stars over lake tahoe.
If we ever go back to lake tahoe, then only to Chaney House.

Love the Chaney house-everything about it. Old Tahoe, the private pier, proximity to good restaurants, the relaxing ambience that Gary and Laurie create. Have been before, just got back again, and will book in the near future. Enough said!!!
