Built in 1892, The Rochester Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Durango, harkening back to Durango’s silver-boom days when it was originally named the "Peeples Hotel." The hotel was completely renovated in 2022, transforming the former 33-room public boarding house into 15 luxurious king and double queen rooms with private baths, featuring modern amenities and furniture that compliment the historic building and architecture. The Peeples Bar opened in April of 2023, serving classic cocktails, a curated selection of natural wines, and a variety of beers. The bar is open to everyone, guests and locals alike.

We had an absolutely amazing experience. I am always a little hesitant to go away from the norm and try places that aren't backed by a chain or part of my usual travel habits, and I am so glad that I did, this time! This was such a great place. The mattress and pillows were fabulous! I mean, I have never slept away from home more comfortably than here, and I have back and orthopedic issues. It is a quaint, small place that is run by only a small staff, which is totally perfect, since it's not a large establishment. You have the feel of being personally cared for. I felt the Rochester has done a lovely job of coupling new technology (apple TVs, text communication, virtual check in, keycode doors) with the old, vintage, historic feel that is appropriate, given the building and local area. The rooms were beautifully appointed with luxury items, both antique pieces, as well as modern appliances and quality products. The complimentary breakfast and beverages provided were a wonderful touch and made it feel like home. Truly, the only thing that I wish they had was an elevator, but given the age of the building, that is likely not practical at all. I believe there were only two floors of rooms, so not really moot and there was someone at the ready to carry bags, if we needed it. I'm sure there were some rooms on the first floor if someone couldn't go upstairs. Just overall a perfect stay and so reasonable for the price. We loved it!

This was a charming hotel and a great place to stay during a mid week business trip. I loved the text messages ahead of check in with all of the information I would need, including details on parking. Each evening, the bar was open and guests receive a complimentary glass of wine. The breakfast each morning was beautifully presented and a great variety of fresh fruit and pastries/muffins. The rooms were spacious, very clean and quiet. I had such a great experience that this is the only place I will stay when I return to Durango.

The hotel is one street from Main Street and almost everything you need is within walking distance. Restaurants, grocery, souvenir stores, specialty stores, and the train.
We stayed in Room #1 in the LeLand House. It is a small apartment with a living room, kitchen/dining area, and bedroom/bathroom. The doors are all coded so no need for a key. And Staff was attentive and available when needed.
The living room had a coat closet, couch (with bed), and a fireplace heater. There’s some other furniture as well like desk, chair, table, and tv. Every comfy and cozy. Sat four people comfortably.
The kitchen had a fridge, stove/oven, and sink. There were a couple pots and pans and table settings for four. No microwave. The high table sat four.
The bedroom had a queen bed and plenty of light. The fireplace heater kept entire place heated. The bathroom had a shower (no tub) with shampoo/conditioner, and soap dispensers. And of course a toilet. The bedroom also had a closet with luggage rack.
This is our go to hotel for all the times we stay in a hotel in Durango.

Pros: nice, comfortable room. Even on the first floor, at the front of the hotel, it was quiet at night. Beautiful garden and convenient downtown location.
Cons: I’m not sure if this establishment wants to be a bar or a hotel. No hotel reception so very hard to get any kind of help or info during stay. In-room information is inaccurate: breakfast is not served 7:00-9:30 (rather coffee is available at 7:00 but fruit and mini baked goods do not come out until much later), there is no free drink from the bar as advertised. We were there on a weekend so didn’t have a problem with parking, but with only 8 spots for 15 rooms, it could be an issue.
All in all, our stay was fine. Communication with guests needs to be improved, but the room was comfortable and we got a restful sleep.

We loved staying at this hotel! The rooms are spacious and modern. The service, specifically Jake at the bar (or he may do everything there!), was very accommodating and made us feel very welcome and taken care of. Thank you for the delicious craft cocktails in the evenings, hot fresh coffee and warm muffins in the morning. We would visit Durango again just to stay at the Rochester.

Our second stay at Rochester Hotel, and though we learned ownership changed a few months ago, our stay was just as fantastic as before. New owners and staff were incredible. Location in the city with many different restaurant choices nearby, a few blocks from the river trail, lovely outdoor area and room comfort all contributed to making this a great place to stay. Staff so knowledgeable, and alway there to offer great ideas and suggestions about outdoor activities, or restaurant and entertainment ideas. Plus the staff made the environment warm and friendly so the lobby /sitting room and beautiful garden were super special. The rooms , bathrooms, and common spaces were immaculate and staff always there to accommodate any needs. Warm muffins and cookies were great treats too. A must stay!

Our family booked 3 rooms at the Rochester for a southwestern road trip. After a long day on the road walking into the gorgeous lobby was such a breath of fresh air. The staff were incredibly friendly and made sure we were very well taken care of. We immediately felt right at home. Our rooms were clean and spacious. There were freshly baked breakfast items and delicious coffee and tea available as well. We couldn’t have been happier during our stay.

We stayed in The Loft at the Rochester and it was absolutely fantastic. The room is more like an apartment with a full kitchen, dining area, tv area, a master bedroom and a queen off the tv room. Since at the time, almost all food options were take out only, it was perfect for either eating that, or cooking our own meal, which we did several times. It was also nice to relax around the fireplace in the room after a day of skiing. The complimentary s'mores in the garden were also great.
Kirk and Laura were fantastic hosts and their team (Nathaniel and Susan) were also great. We could not have asked for better service. It's just a great place that is so much better than even the best chain hotels. We'll definitely be back.

The property is under new ownership but April & Brandon are there to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Perfect location to everything Durango — just steps away out the front door. Rooms aren’t fancy but that’s what I wanted. The grand hotel in town felt like walking into a bordello with their Wild West decor which was not what I wanted for my Durango experience. Friendly, accessible — the Rochester Hotel has it all.
